I heard him before I saw him — that particular shallow wheeze, the sound of a man whose lungs have been fighting him since childhood. He came through the door in a coat that wasn't his. The color was specific: dark amber, the shade of a longhaired breed. His Tom Ford was missing because he'd left it somewhere. The borrowed coat was a replacement.

I moved my eyes to his left wrist. He'd pushed the bracelet up toward his elbow, but the paper band from the urgent care clinic was still there — pale blue, the kind they put on you when you come in on a walk-in basis. "Val, I really am sorry about the time —"

"I'll have the car brought around for you." I signaled the maître d'. "You sound congested. You should rest."

"I thought we could still —"

"The kitchen closed an hour ago." I stood, straightened my dress, and picked up my folder. "The car will be out front in four minutes."

He looked at me for a long moment. Searching for the argument, I think. For the crack. There wasn't one.

"Okay," he said finally. "I'll — okay."

I walked him to the entrance, watched the car pull away, and stood on East 65th Street for exactly as long as it took to confirm the taillights had turned the corner.

Then I took out my phone.

Two messages. One to Priya Raman: *Three years of joint account statements. Estate medical incident log. Brooklyn urgent care visitor records for tonight. Priority.* One to my private banker: *Freeze discretionary disbursements pending review. Effective immediately.*

I put the phone back in my bag and walked to my own car.

The marriage had been, for three years, a project I managed with the same rigor I applied to everything else — a $30 million sealed estate on the Upper East Side, an $800,000-a-year filtration system and on-call medical team, forty million in Griffin Hotels bridge loans so his family could keep their name on a building they could no longer afford. I had done all of it without asking for acknowledgment, because I had believed that action was its own language.

By eight the next morning, Priya had flagged the first anomaly: recurring wire transfers from Hudson's discretionary account to something called Velvet Paws Wellness LLC. A nominally nonprofit Brooklyn cat rescue with almost no verifiable veterinary spend.
