My Husband Served Divorce Papers After I Gave Birth Chapter 1

The penthouse was silent at eleven-thirty at night. I sat at the kitchen island, one hand resting on my swollen belly, the other holding a glass of water that had long gone cold. The marble countertop felt like ice beneath my fingertips, but I barely noticed. My attention was fixed on the two pieces of paper I'd discovered in the span of an hour, both of which now lay between my hands like evidence in a case I wasn't yet ready to build.

The first was a hotel receipt from the Mandarin Oriental. Two nights, charged to our shared card, totaling $1,287. The second was Waylon's annual physical report, which he'd left open on his study desk. The bloodwork was flagged in red—elevated stomach-cancer risk, requiring immediate follow-up screening.

I'd read each document twice. The receipt first, folded neatly in his coat pocket where he thought I'd never look. Then the medical report, its clinical language somehow more devastating than any shouting match could have been. My husband was killing himself, and I was the only one who'd noticed.

The elevator chimed, and I heard his key in the door. I didn't move from my seat. The sound of his footsteps faltered when he saw me waiting, the papers arranged between us like a verdict.

"You're up late," he said, loosening his tie. The scent of perfume—not mine—clung to his collar. A floral note, sweet and cloying.

I slid the medical report across the marble toward him. "Your stomach is a problem," I said, my voice flat and unornamented. "You should see Dr. Bennett again. Soon."

Waylon picked up the paper, glanced at it with the casual disinterest of a man who'd seen similar warnings before. "It's just stress," he said, folding it carelessly. "You know how these things are. The numbers fluctuate."

I didn't mention the hotel receipt. Didn't mention Mariana. Didn't mention the nights he'd been coming home later and later, or the way he'd stopped eating the meals I'd prepared to manage his condition. I simply watched him dismiss his own mortality with the same casual negligence he'd applied to our marriage.

He walked past me toward the stairs, pausing only to ask if I needed anything from the kitchen. I shook my head. He didn't ask why I was still awake, why I was holding the evidence of his betrayal in my hands, or why I'd chosen to confront him with his mortality rather than his infidelity. He simply climbed the stairs, leaving me alone with the silence and the cold marble.

The next morning, I called Sloane Reyes. Her assistant answered on the third ring. "Sloane & Reyes, how may I direct your call?"

"This is Regina Thomas," I said, my voice steady. "I need to schedule a confidential consultation with Sloane. Today, if possible. It's regarding a divorce."

By nine a.m., I was seated across from Sloane in her immaculate office. The Manhattan skyline stretched behind her through floor-to-ceiling windows, but I barely registered the view. I placed both the hotel receipt and the medical report on her desk, side by side.

"Tell me everything," Sloane said, her dark eyes sharp and assessing.

I did. Not with tears or rage, but with the same precision I'd applied to building Jadewood from nothing. I outlined the joint accounts, the properties, the agency's valuation. I listened as she mapped out a strategy so airtight that by the time she finished speaking, I understood that Waylon would have no room to negotiate when the time came.

"The penthouse and the Hamptons house are your primary leverage points," Sloane explained, her manicured fingers tapping against her leather portfolio. "The agency is more complicated, but we can structure the separation to ensure you're protected. The question is timing."

"I'm five months pregnant," I said. "The baby is due in eight weeks. I want this handled before then."

Sloane nodded, her expression revealing nothing. "We'll need to move quickly, but carefully. The goal is to position you as the party seeking stability for the child's sake, while securing the assets you've earned."

I asked two questions, both procedural. How long would the paperwork take? What was the earliest I could sign? Sloane's answers were crisp and reassuring. By the time I left her office, I had a plan.

For the next three weeks, I played the part of the devoted wife and business partner. I attended industry events at Waylon's side, smiling for photographers, discussing contracts and casting calls with the same focus I'd always brought to our shared business. No one could have guessed that beneath the surface, I was systematically dismantling our life together.

I moved our liquid assets out of joint accounts, revalued the properties, and had the divorce paperwork pre-drafted and ready. Waylon, now entirely unmonitored at home, abandoned the strict diet I'd maintained for years and spent his evenings with Mariana in hotel suites across Manhattan.

The night before my scheduled C-section, I packed my hospital bag methodically. Insurance cards. Charging cable. A single photograph of myself, taken the year Waylon and I opened Jadewood—before Mariana, before the betrayal, before I understood what I was capable of. I set the bag by the door and called Sloane one last time.

"Everything is in place," she assured me. "The filing will be delivered to your hospital room first thing tomorrow. After the surgery, when you're ready. Not before."

"Thank you," I said, and hung up.

Waylon wasn't home. He hadn't been home for dinner, and he wouldn't be home tonight. I stood in our empty penthouse, one hand on my belly, feeling my son kick beneath my palm, and I made a silent promise. This child would never know the instability of a home built on lies. This child would be raised by a mother who understood her worth.

Tomorrow, I would deliver my son and divorce my husband in the same breath. And neither event would break me.
