My Husband Secretly Had Children With His Assistants Chapter 1

The Plaza ballroom looked like something out of a dream. Crystal chandeliers threw soft light across five hundred people in black tie. Champagne towers sparkled on tables draped in white silk. Cameras on tripods streamed everything live to screens in three different cities. Ten years. We built this in ten years. From a fire escape in Queens to this.

I stood in the wings wearing midnight silk that cost more than our first office lease. My hair was pinned up. My makeup was perfect. I held a champagne flute I hadn't sipped from because I wanted to be clearheaded when Seth called me onstage. He always did. Every major announcement, every milestone, he would reach for my hand and pull me into the light with him. That was us. That was how we worked.

Seth stood at the podium in a tuxedo that fit him like armor. He smiled at the crowd. The smile I knew. The one that made investors write checks and journalists lean forward. He started talking about the company's growth. Revenue. Market position. Expansion into new sectors. His voice was warm and controlled. I watched him the way I always did—proud, patient, waiting for my cue.

Then he said something I didn't expect.

"Tonight isn't just about looking back. It's about the future."

He paused. The room went quiet in that expectant way crowds do when they sense something big is coming.

"The Hoffman Corporation has always been built on partnership. On trust. On the willingness to make sacrifices for something bigger than any single person."

I straightened slightly. This was it. He was going to call me up.

"Which is why I'm proud to announce a major restructuring that will secure our legacy for the next generation."

Restructuring. The word landed wrong. We hadn't discussed restructuring. I would have known. I knew everything.

"I want to introduce two people who have become essential to this company's future. Ashlyn Moreno and Keily Warren."

Two women stepped onto the stage from the opposite wing. I didn't move. I knew their names. They were executive assistants. Smart, polished, efficient. Seth had hired them maybe three years ago. I'd signed off on it. They wore gowns that matched the champagne towers—gold and shimmering. They stood on either side of Seth like bookends.

Ashlyn was tall with dark hair swept over one shoulder. Keily was smaller, quieter, with a smile that didn't reach her eyes. They both looked comfortable up there. Too comfortable.

"These women have given this company something invaluable," Seth said. His voice was steady. Warm. "They've provided what we need to endure beyond any single partnership. To build something that lasts."

I watched his mouth move. I heard the words. They didn't make sense yet.

"Effective immediately, I'm awarding them significant equity stakes in the Hoffman Corporation. They represent the future of the Hoffman legacy."

The room shifted. I felt it before I heard it—a ripple of confusion moving through five hundred people in evening wear. Heads turned. Whispers started. Cameras kept rolling.

I stood in the wings holding a champagne glass that suddenly weighed a thousand pounds. My hand didn't shake. My face didn't move. I was very still. The kind of still you learn when you grow up in places where showing fear gets you hurt.

Seth didn't look at me. Not once. He shook Ashlyn's hand. He shook Keily's hand. He smiled for the cameras. The three of them stood together under the lights while the audience clapped—uncertain, scattered applause that sounded like static.

I set my glass on a passing server's tray. I didn't look at anyone. I walked through the side door into the marble hallway where the coatroom was. The attendant brought my coat without me having to ask. I didn't tip. I didn't say thank you. I put the coat on and walked through The Plaza's lobby in midnight silk and four-inch heels, past guests who were still arriving, past the doorman who opened the glass door, out onto Fifth Avenue.

November air hit my face. Cold and sharp. I stood on the sidewalk and didn't move for thirty seconds. I wasn't crying. I wasn't shaking. I was counting my breaths the way I used to count them in the group home when I needed to stay calm. In for four. Hold for four. Out for four.

Then I pulled out my phone. I scrolled to Marcus Webb's name. He answered on the first ring.

"Get everyone together," I said.

I hung up. I put the phone in my coat pocket. I stood on Fifth Avenue while taxis went by and people in furs walked past me into the warmth. I looked up at The Plaza's lit windows. Somewhere inside, Seth was still smiling. Still shaking hands. Still standing with those two women under the chandeliers.

I turned and started walking. I didn't know where yet. Just away.
