My Husband Saved My Sister Instead of Me Chapter 1

The penthouse was quiet except for the hum of the city forty floors down. I sat on the edge of the bed in my wedding gown, veil still pinned, hands folded like I was waiting for a doctor's verdict instead of a wedding night.

Cassian stood by the window with his back to me. He hadn't taken off his jacket. He hadn't looked at me since we walked through the door.

"Let's be clear about this," he said, like he was reading terms off a contract. "I don't expect anything from you. Don't expect anything from me either."

I'd loved him since I was a girl watching him from across a ballroom, and now I sat there in white lace and said nothing, because what was there to say to a man who'd already decided who I was before I opened my mouth.

"Okay," I said.

His phone buzzed. He pulled it out, and I watched his whole face change. Soft. Worried. Alive in a way it hadn't been for me in the five minutes we'd been alone.

A voice note played, tinny through the speaker. Kensley's voice, breathy and small. "Cassian, I know it's your wedding night, but I'm just—I feel so alone tonight."

He pocketed the phone and picked up his jacket off the chair.

"Cassian." I said his name like it might stop him.

It didn't. He walked out. The door clicked shut behind him, soft and final, like a verdict.

I sat there a long time in my dress, veil pinned, alone.

---

The weeks after folded into a pattern I learned fast. Silent dinners. Photos for the society pages where he'd rest a hand at my waist and nothing else. Every time Kensley called with some new crisis—a broken heel, a bad date, a bad mood—Cassian left, mid-sentence, mid-meal, mid-anything. I stopped asking where. I threw myself into Carpenter Industries instead, doing the work my father handed off without ever putting my name on it.

Then, at a charity function my father's company sponsored, I met Romeo Moreno.

He was younger than most of the men in that ballroom, in a suit that fit like he wasn't used to wearing one yet, and he came straight toward me with an expression I hadn't seen aimed at me in months—open, warm, unguarded.

"Ms. Carpenter." He hesitated. "I think you funded my scholarship. Anonymously. I only found out a year ago."

I blinked. "I don't—"

"Romeo Moreno." He smiled like it cost him nothing. "Bronx kid. Full ride. I never got to say thank you."

For five minutes, someone asked me questions and actually waited for the answers. I laughed, once, for the first time in weeks.

Then a hand closed around my elbow.

"We're leaving," Cassian said, not to Romeo. Not really to me either.

Romeo's jaw tightened, but he didn't say anything. He just watched us go, memorizing something in my face I didn't want him to see.

---

Kensley started showing up at Pierce family dinners without invitations, draping herself over Cassian's arm, dropping little comments about how "cold" I was, how "hard" I made things. I tried, once, to talk to Cassian about it in private.

"She wasn't invited," I said carefully. "Three times this month."

His eyes flattened. "Kensley saved my life. What have you ever done for me?"

I didn't answer. There wasn't an answer that wouldn't have cost me something I couldn't afford to lose. I just nodded and let it sit there, a stone in my chest, and I never brought it up again.

---

At the Met gala, under all that gold light, Kensley leaned close to Cassian's ear and whispered something I couldn't hear. Whatever it was, his face went from calm to furious in one second flat.

He crossed the room. Knocked my phone straight out of my hand before I understood what was happening.

"You've made her miserable," he said, loud enough for the cameras. "Is that what you wanted?"

Then the champagne. Cold, sudden, running down my hair, my dress, dripping onto two hundred dollars' worth of marble floor while two hundred people watched and half of them raised their phones instead of their eyebrows.

I didn't cry. I excused myself with a smile so calm it scared me a little, walked to the ladies' room, and gripped the sink until my knuckles went white and stayed that way.

Later, I called my mother.

"Mom, he poured champagne on me. In front of everyone."

A pause. Then, in that smooth socialite voice she uses for bad news and worse advice: "You should have handled Kensley more strategically, Sierra."

I hung up. I didn't cry that time either. I was starting to understand that no one was coming, and some part of me, small and quiet, had already started deciding what to do about that.
