My Husband Protected His Mistress While I Lost Our Child Chapter 1

The pregnancy test sat on the bathroom counter, two pink lines staring back at me like a secret finally revealed. My hands trembled slightly as I picked it up again, as if another look might change the result. But the second line remained stubbornly pink, defiantly beautiful. After years of trying, of temperature tracking and ovulation tests, of Dorian's gentle reassurances that 'our time would come,' we were finally having a baby.

I tucked the test into my purse, a smile playing at my lips as I drove home from the clinic. The spring sunlight streamed through the car windows, casting everything in a golden glow that seemed to mirror my mood. Dorian would be in his study, probably surrounded by research papers, his reading glasses perched on the bridge of his nose. I rehearsed how I would tell him as I climbed the stairs to our penthouse. Should I be direct? Dramatic? Maybe I'd place the test in his hand and simply say, 'We did it.'

The elevator doors opened to our foyer, and I stepped into the silence of our home. 'Dorian?' I called out, my voice echoing against the marble floors. No answer. He must be deep in his work. I pulled out my phone to text him I was home, and that's when it happened. A message from an unknown number lit up my screen.

'Congratulations, Stella. He's so excited about the baby. Almost as excited as he was last night when he whispered he'd never felt so alive as when he's with me. We should talk sometime. I could tell you all about what he really thinks of your... efforts. -H'

The phone nearly slipped from my fingers. Hadlee Watkins. Dorian's research assistant. The newest star in his lab, with her bright eyes and eager smile. My other hand instinctively moved to my stomach, still flat beneath my blouse. The joy I'd felt moments before curdled into something cold and unnameable, spreading through my chest like ice water.

I stood frozen in the foyer, the message burning into my vision. The words blurred as I read them again and again, searching for some explanation that wouldn't shatter everything I believed about my marriage. But there was none. Only the clinical precision of intimate details that only a lover would know.

The next morning, I sat in a different examination room, staring at a different set of test results. The doctor's voice seemed to come from far away as she explained the diagnosis. A sexually transmitted infection. Acquired recently. My untouched coffee sat cold on the counter beside me, its surface undisturbed. The fluorescent light above hummed, a steady, indifferent witness to my unraveling world.

I didn't cry. Something inside me had crystallized, hardening into a clarity I'd never known before. I scheduled a follow-up appointment, drove home through streets that no longer looked the same, and waited.

That evening, I found Dorian in his study, just as I'd imagined earlier. But this time, I wasn't carrying a pregnancy test. I was carrying test results and a message that had destroyed my world.

'Dorian,' I said, my voice steadier than I expected. 'We need to talk.'

He looked up from his papers, his expression shifting from annoyance to curiosity. 'What is it, Stella? I'm in the middle of something important.'

I unfolded the papers, placed them on his desk. 'I'm pregnant.'

His eyes widened, genuine surprise breaking through his composed facade. Then I watched his face change as he processed what this meant, what it would mean for his carefully constructed narrative.

'And I have this,' I added, pointing to the diagnosis. 'From you.'

He didn't apologize. Instead, he leaned back in his chair, his fingers steepled beneath his chin. With the measured calm of a man delivering conference remarks, he began to speak.

'There's something you should know about the Carlson bloodline, Stella. A hereditary genetic curse—a recessive marker that threatens our future generations. What you're seeing as infidelity is actually a controlled scientific parallel study. A necessary genetic countermeasure.'

His voice was so reasonable, so clinical. As if he were explaining a complex experiment to a particularly slow student.

'Hadlee's genetic profile is uniquely complementary to mine. This arrangement is not personal, Stella. It's science. I would think someone of your intelligence would understand that.'

I stared at him, this stranger wearing my husband's face. 'And what about our baby?'

'A test subject,' he said, his eyes flickering briefly to my stomach. 'A potential carrier of the marker. We'll need to run tests.'

I walked out of the study without another word, booked a hotel room, and lay awake staring at the ceiling, one hand resting protectively over my stomach. The man I had loved for seven years was a stranger. And I was carrying his child.
