My Husband Married His Mistress Behind My Back Chapter 1

The page came through at 11:47 p.m.

Private recovery wing. Suite 4. Attending required.

I was already in scrubs, already tired in the specific way that a sixteen-hour shift produces — not sleepy, just emptied. I pulled my badge from my coat pocket and walked the corridor without hurrying. NYC Presbyterian at midnight has its own particular quiet. The fluorescents hum. The monitors beep in their different rhythms. You learn not to hear it after a while.

I pushed open the door to Suite 4.

Nicholas was propped against the pillows, IV line in his left arm, color poor but stable. He looked like himself — that particular brand of handsome that had always seemed effortless, the jaw, the dark eyes. I had spent twelve years learning the exact geography of that face.

She was beside the bed.

Kenia Medina. Twenty-six years old. One shoulder of her silk blouse had slipped. Her fingers rested on Nicholas's forearm with the casual ownership of someone who has stopped bothering to perform discretion. She looked at me the way you look at a coat check attendant. Briefly. Without adjustment.

I kept my face exactly where it was.

"Dr. Porter." Nicholas's voice was flat. Not embarrassed. Not anything. "He needs a type-specific transfusion. His levels dropped this afternoon. You're the attending on record for his donor protocol."

Not my name. Not Sariah. Dr. Porter.

Kenia's mouth curved. Not quite a smile. Something smaller and more deliberate.

I looked at the chart on the wall panel. I looked at the monitors. I did not look at her again.

"I'll need the room," I said.

Nicholas glanced at Kenia. Something passed between them. She stood, smoothed her blouse, and walked past me close enough that I could smell her perfume — something expensive, something I didn't recognize. The door clicked shut behind her.

I set up the line.

My blood. It had always been my blood — routed through the hospital's anonymous donor system nine years ago, matched and catalogued under a protocol number rather than a name. Nicholas had never known. The attending physicians had never known. There was only one person in this building who understood what flowed through that line, and she was currently threading a needle into her husband's vein with the steadiness of someone who has practiced not feeling things.

He didn't speak. Neither did I.

The monitor kept its rhythm. I watched the line. I removed my gloves when it was done, folded them with two precise movements, and dropped them in the biohazard bin.

"Levels should stabilize by morning," I said. "I'll note it in the chart."

I walked out.

The corridor was empty. I stopped walking. I pressed two fingers against my sternum — just below the place where the scar starts, the long pale line I've worn under high-collared blouses for nine years — and stood there until the pressure behind my eyes receded.

Then I straightened my blazer and finished my shift.

---

A week later, I took a personal morning and went downtown.

The Manhattan City Clerk's office smells like old paper and recycled air. I took a number. I waited. When the clerk called me forward, I slid the divorce filing across the counter with both hands.

She typed something. Frowned at her screen. Typed again.

"Ms. Porter." She looked up. "This marriage was dissolved six months ago. I have a finalized decree here, filed October 14th."

I heard the words. I understood them individually.

"That's not possible," I said. My voice was completely even. "I never filed."

"The consent signature is on record." She turned the monitor toward me.

My signature. My name, in my handwriting, on a document I had never seen.

Below it, a second entry. Marriage registration. Nicholas James Spencer and Kenia Adele Medina. Filed six weeks later.

I stood in the fluorescent light of that government office with an unfiled form still in my hand. The clerk was watching me with the careful expression of someone who has delivered bad news across a counter before and knows there is nothing useful to add.

"Thank you," I said. I placed the form on the counter. I walked out into the noise of lower Manhattan.

---

The apartment was stripped.

Not ransacked — methodical. His closet, empty. The study, bare. Every drawer I opened held nothing but the smell of absence.

I searched for three hours. Every place I had ever seen him put papers. The filing cabinet. The lockbox behind the bookcase. The desk drawer where he kept things he considered settled.

The prenuptial agreement was gone. Every copy.

I sat down on the floor of the bare study in the dark.

For the first time since a hospital room in London — since eighteen months of recovery I endured alone so that he would never have to know the cost — I let myself feel the full weight of what had been done to me.

I pressed my fingers against my sternum.

I did not cry.

I began to think.
