My Husband Let Our Baby Die for His Mistress Chapter 1

The contractions started at 2 a.m., three weeks early. I remember the fluorescent lights in the ER hallway, too bright, buzzing faintly like something trying to warn me. I remember calling Cole's cell four times before a nurse finally reached his assistant.

He didn't come for six hours.

By the time he walked through the door of my hospital room, still in his suit, I already knew. I could see it in the careful way the doctor wouldn't look at me. I could feel it in the emptiness where a heartbeat used to be, right under my ribs, where I'd fallen asleep every night for eight months listening to it.

"Where were you?" I asked. My voice didn't sound like mine. It sounded like it belonged to someone very far away, someone underwater.

"Valentina had a cardiac episode," Cole said. He said it the way he'd report a stock price. Flat. Certain. "Dr. Ferris was the only specialist on call. Someone who needed help more required him."

I stared at him. My son — our son, the one we'd waited four years and three failed rounds of IVF for — was gone, and Cole was explaining himself like a man defending a business decision to the board.

"He was my baby, Cole."

"I know." He didn't reach for my hand. "I made the right call."

Something in me didn't break that day. It fractured — quiet, structural, deep in a place I didn't have a name for yet. I would spend months pretending I hadn't heard the crack.

---

Her name was Valentina Price. I learned it slowly, the way you learn a stain is spreading — a little more each week. She began showing up at the Reynolds Group offices in soft cardigans and softer voices, always needing Cole for something only he could give. A signature. A ride to an appointment. A shoulder.

I told myself grief was making me suspicious of everything. I went back to my lab. I buried myself in three years of research — a synthetic tissue material I'd built cell culture by cell culture, log by log — because the lab was the one place my hands still knew what to do.

I didn't let myself see what was already gone. I didn't want to.

---

The conference was at the Javits Center in March. A colleague texted me a photo of the keynote screen before I even sat down: my molecular structure, my data, my three years — presented under Valentina Price's name.

I went home and confronted Cole with the fire I thought any husband would have for me. Instead, I found a man who had already made up his mind.

"She says you've been taking credit for her work for months," Cole said.

"That's insane. I have every notebook, every timestamp—"

"I don't need to see them, Eliza."

He didn't ask for my files. He didn't ask for anything. He just looked at me like I was the problem he hadn't solved yet.

---

The press conference happened two weeks later. Reynolds Group PR wrote the statement. I stood at a podium under lights that made my eyes water and read words that weren't mine: *errors in attribution... regret for the confusion...*

The second fracture wasn't quiet at all. It was the sound of my own voice apologizing for a theft I hadn't committed. By Monday, my university had rescinded the appointment they'd promised me in the fall. By Wednesday, colleagues had stopped returning calls I'd made a hundred times before without a second thought.

Ten years of work, gone in an afternoon, and Cole told me it would "blow over."

---

Then came the man in the gray suit.

Father Simon Cade had a voice like warm gravel and eyes that never blinked when they should have. Valentina brought him to the penthouse on a Tuesday, introduced him as someone who'd "helped her see clearly." Cole took him into his study alone. I sat outside the door for forty minutes, hands folded in my lap, feeling something cold settle into my spine.

When Cole came out, his face had the stillness I'd learned to fear — the one he wore before decisions he'd already made and wouldn't unmake.

"He says you're carrying something," Cole said. "A curse. It's draining her. It's poison, Eliza, and it's in you."

I almost laughed. I would have laughed, if I hadn't seen how badly he wanted to believe it.

"Cole. Listen to yourself."

"Ninety-nine lashes," he said, quieter now, like a man reading scripture. "That's the purification. I have to do it myself."

"You can't be serious."

He didn't answer. He took my wrist — not roughly, not yet, almost gently — and led me down the hall to the room we never used, the one with the heavy door and the thick carpet that swallowed sound.

I looked at his face for something. Doubt. Hesitation. Anything.

There was nothing there at all.

The door clicked shut behind us, and the lock turned.
