My Husband Let His Mistress Kill My Mother Chapter 1

I sat alone at the vanity in our bedroom, the morning light filtering through the curtains in pale, indifferent strips. Seven years. Seven rounds of IVF. Seven years of trying to be enough for a man who had never once looked at me the way he looked at other women in crowded rooms. My fingers traced the edge of the vanity's marble surface, cool and smooth beneath my touch. The date—our anniversary—sat in my mind like a small, hollow thing. I had planned nothing. James had planned nothing. We had never celebrated before, and I didn't expect today to be any different.

My phone buzzed against the glass. I expected another message from Dr. Harrison about the next round of treatments, or perhaps a reminder from the private care facility about my mother's care schedule. Instead, the message showed an unfamiliar number. The preview text read: 'From Marcus Webb—a document you need to see.'

Marcus Webb. James's senior associate. A man who had watched me fade into the wallpaper of James's life for years, who nodded politely at corporate functions and asked after my mother with genuine kindness. I opened the message.

'You have been sent a secure file. Click to download.'

I pressed the link, expecting a misdirected work document, perhaps something related to the Castillo Group's latest acquisition. The file opened.

The first image made my breath catch. James and Chelsea, tangled together in what appeared to be a hotel room. The timestamp showed three days ago. I scrolled. Page after page of evidence spilled across my screen—more photographs, intimate text exchanges, hotel receipts spanning months, years. Chelsea's laughing face, James's hands on her body, the casual intimacy of lovers who had never bothered to hide.

Then came the final pages. An ultrasound image. Chelsea's handwriting on a note: 'Our little miracle.' And James's response, sent from his private phone: 'I've never been happier. This changes everything.'

I set the phone face-down on the vanity. My hands found each other, folding into my lap in the way I had learned from my mother—the quiet gesture of a woman containing something too large to be held. I did not cry. I did not scream. I simply sat there, watching my reflection in the mirror blur slightly as my eyes adjusted.

The door opened. James appeared in the doorway, already dressed in his charcoal suit, his expression distant and preoccupied. 'We need to leave in twenty minutes,' he said. 'Chelsea's meeting us downstairs.'

'Chelsea?' My voice sounded strange to my own ears.

'For dinner. I told you this week.' He checked his watch. 'She's part of the family now. It's appropriate.'

I nodded, my phone still face-down on the vanity. 'Of course.'

Twenty minutes later, I found myself sliding into the back seat of James's Bentley. Chelsea was already in the front passenger seat, her perfume filling the car's interior like an expensive fog. James leaned across her body to adjust her seatbelt, his hand lingering on her shoulder. I watched the gesture from the back seat, the PowerPoint images burning behind my eyes.

'Comfortable?' James asked her.

'Perfect,' Chelsea replied, her smile reaching her eyes. She glanced at me in the rearview mirror, a flash of something triumphant crossing her features before she turned away.

I said nothing.

The restaurant James had chosen was intimate and exclusive—the kind of place where the staff knew him by name and led us to a secluded corner table without being asked. Chelsea ordered for all of us, her voice warm and confident as she spoke to the waiter. She touched James's arm, laughed at his remarks, performed the role of the woman who belonged at his side with seamless precision.

When James excused himself to take a call, Chelsea turned to me, her smile never faltering. 'You should enjoy tonight,' she murmured, her voice soft but deliberate. 'Things are about to change.'

I folded my napkin carefully, placing it beside my untouched wine glass. I looked at her—really looked at her—and saw the girl who had always wanted what I had, even when I had never wanted it myself.

'I'm sure they are,' I replied.

The next morning, I stood in James's study, my phone in my hand. 'I need to speak with you,' I said, my voice steadier than I expected.

He looked up from his desk, his expression already growing impatient. 'About?'

I held up the phone. 'About this.'

He listened for less than thirty seconds before his face hardened. 'This is ridiculous, Dorothy. You're being paranoid. Chelsea is family. She's been part of our lives for years.'

'Family doesn't do what you two have been doing.'

'Enough.' He stood, straightening his cufflinks—a gesture I recognized as his warning that the conversation was over. 'Your responsibility is to prepare for the next round of IVF. Nothing else matters right now.'

He walked past me, leaving me alone in his study. I stood there, my hands at my sides, understanding with perfect clarity that no conversation within these walls would ever protect me. The PowerPoint images flickered in my mind—not just the photographs, but the ultrasound, the words: 'Our little miracle.'

I folded my hands in my lap and waited for him to be gone.
