My Husband Let His Mistress Drug Our Son Chapter 1

My son turned eighteen on a Tuesday.

I had the dinner catered from Le Bernardin. White linen, crystal glasses, candles in silver holders. Our penthouse looked over Central Park, and the city lights blinked below us like nothing could ever go wrong.

Lane sat across from me in a navy blazer. He had my cheekbones and his father's easy smile. He was laughing at something on his phone. He had been accepted to three Ivy League schools. He was going to Columbia. Everything was going according to plan.

Maximus sat at the head of the table. He always did. He raised his glass and gave a short toast about "the man Lane is becoming." It was a nice speech. Maximus was always good at nice speeches.

I waited until the main course was cleared.

Then I set down my wine glass. Slowly. Exactly in the center of my place setting.

Maximus noticed. His smile stayed, but his eyes changed. After eighteen years, even he knew that sound.

I took the manila envelope from the chair beside me and slid it across the table. It stopped against his bread plate.

"What's this?" he asked.

"Divorce papers," I said. "They were filed this morning. Our contract is fulfilled."

The room went very quiet. Somewhere in the kitchen, a caterer dropped a spoon.

Lane's phone slipped from his hand. "Mom. What?"

Maximus didn't open the envelope. He just looked at it. His jaw moved, but no words came out at first. He looked shocked. But underneath the shock, I saw something else. Something like a man who had heard footsteps behind him for years and finally turned around.

"Irene," he said. "Tonight? On his birthday?"

"Eighteen years," I said. "Today is the last day of eighteen years. The date was always tonight."

"We can talk about this." He leaned forward. He used his boardroom voice, warm and reasonable. "Whatever this is, we can fix it. Counseling. A vacation. Name it."

"There's nothing to fix."

"Everything was fine!" His hand hit the table. The glasses shook. "We were fine."

"You were fine," I said.

He opened his mouth, then shut it.

Lane pushed back his chair. His face was red. "What contract? What are you talking about? Why is nobody explaining anything?"

I looked at my son. I thought about the night he was born. The cold light. The blood. The empty chair beside the bed.

I didn't say any of it.

"The court requires a thirty-day cooling-off period," I said. "I've already accounted for it. Nothing will change in thirty days."

"That's it?" Lane's voice cracked. "That's all you're going to say?"

"Yes."

I stood up and folded my napkin. The waiter came out with the cake. Three tiers, white chocolate, Lane's name in gold.

"Happy birthday, Lane," I said. "Enjoy your dessert."

I walked to my room and closed the door. Behind it, I heard Maximus say my name once. Then nothing.

I slept seven hours. I didn't dream.

---

At 7:14 the next morning, I was at my desk at Armstrong Group.

My office sat on the forty-first floor in Midtown. Glass walls. Gray sky. Rain was coming, and the clouds hung low over the buildings like they were waiting for permission.

My coffee was black and scalding. I took one sip. Perfect. I opened the overnight briefings. Tokyo was up. London was nervous. A supplier in Ohio wanted to renegotiate. Normal things.

I picked up my red pen.

"You actually did it."

Rachel Huang stood in my doorway. She was Armstrong Group's outside counsel, and she had been my friend since before the wedding. She was the only person alive who knew about the countdown. She'd drafted the papers herself.

She was holding her own coffee, but she wasn't drinking it.

"I said I would," I answered.

"I know what you said." She stepped inside. "I'm asking if you're all right."

I didn't look up from the report. I underlined a number. "I've been all right for eighteen years. Today is no different."

Rachel was quiet for a moment. I felt her eyes on me. She was looking for a crack. She always did.

"Max called me at two a.m.," she said. "Four times."

"Did you answer?"

"No."

"Good."

She sighed and sat on the edge of my desk. "He's not going to take this quietly, Irene."

"He doesn't have to take it quietly. He just has to take it."

Outside, the first drops of rain hit the window.

---

That evening, I came home late. The penthouse was dark except for the kitchen light.

Lane was at the counter, eating leftover birthday cake straight from the box. He didn't look at me.

"Dad's taking me to LA," he said. "First class. We leave in three days."

I set my keys down. "A trip."

"Father-son bonding." He stabbed the cake with his fork. "At least somebody in this house wants to spend time with me."

I looked at the back of his head. His hair needed cutting. He used to let me do it when he was small.

"Los Angeles," I said.

"Yeah. Is that a problem?"

I knew what was in Los Angeles. I'd known for eighteen years. Her number was still saved in Maximus's phone under a first name only.

I could have told him. I didn't.

"No," I said. "It's not my problem."

Lane turned around then. For a second, he looked like he wanted me to fight him. To tell him not to go. To say something soft.

I picked up my keys and went to my room.

Behind me, I heard him drop the fork into the box. It made a small, hollow sound.

Three days, I thought. Then thirty.

The rain kept falling all night.
