My Husband Kicked Me Down the Stairs for His Mistress Chapter 1

I sat at the kitchen island. The granite was cold under my palms. The parent-teacher conference notice lay between my hands like evidence.

I'd been to every single one. Every fall, every spring, for six years. I drove across town in traffic. I rearranged work calls I didn't have anymore. I sat in those tiny plastic chairs and listened to teachers talk about Aidan's progress, his setbacks, his medication adjustments. I took notes in a binder I kept color-coded by semester.

This time, the notice had a handwritten line at the bottom: "Student requests Joelle Vargas attend in place of parent."

I heard Aidan before I saw him. His backpack hit the floor in the hallway. He walked into the kitchen, grabbed a juice box from the fridge, and didn't look at me.

"Aidan," I said quietly. "Can we talk about this?"

He turned. His face was blank. Eleven years old and already so good at that look. The one that made me feel like I was bothering him just by existing.

"Talk about what?" he said.

"The conference. You asked for Joelle to go instead of me."

He shrugged. "Yeah. So?"

I kept my voice steady. "I've been to every conference since you started school. I thought—"

"You thought wrong," he said. He punctured the juice box with the straw. "Joelle actually cares. You just go because you have to. It's embarrassing."

The word landed like a slap. I sat very still.

"Embarrassing," I repeated.

"Yeah." He took a long sip, eyes on me the whole time. "You don't even know my teachers' names half the time. Joelle knows. She asks about my day. She listens."

I had a binder upstairs with every teacher's name, every email, every progress report going back six years. I didn't say that.

"Aidan," I said. "I love you. Everything I do—"

"I wish you were dead," he said.

I stopped breathing.

He said it so easily. Like he'd been practicing. "If you were dead, Joelle could come to everything. She could be my real mom. And I wouldn't have to pretend anymore."

He walked out. Left his backpack on the floor. Left me sitting there with my hands still flat on the granite.

I didn't move for a long time.

---

Ezekiel came home after ten. I heard his keys in the door, his shoes in the hall. He smelled like scotch and something floral. Joelle's perfume. I knew the scent by now.

He walked into the kitchen, loosened his tie, poured himself a drink.

"Long day," he said to no one in particular.

I was still at the island. Same spot. The conference notice was still there.

"Aidan told me he wishes I were dead," I said.

Ezekiel paused mid-sip. Then he set the glass down and adjusted his cufflinks. That thing he did when he was cornered.

"Kids say things," he said.

"He said he wants Joelle at his parent-teacher conference instead of me. He said I'm embarrassing."

Ezekiel sighed. Like I was the inconvenience. "Robin. Maybe if you were a little less replaceable, he wouldn't feel that way."

I looked at him. Really looked. At the man I'd driven cross-country for. The man whose startup I'd co-signed loans for. The man I'd nearly died giving a son to.

He took another sip of scotch and didn't meet my eyes.

I reached into my bag. Pulled out the papers I'd been carrying for three months. Slid them across the island.

"Sign these," I said.

He glanced down. His face didn't change. "You're being dramatic."

"I'm done," I said.

He laughed. Actually laughed. "Done? Robin, where are you going to go? You don't have a job. You don't have money. You don't have anything outside this house. You are this house."

I stood. My knee ached—the one I'd ruined in the car accident driving to meet his investors. I ignored it.

"I'll have a lawyer contact you," I said.

I walked upstairs. Packed a suitcase. One suitcase. I didn't take photos. Didn't take jewelry. Took my clothes, my phone charger, my driver's license, and the copy of the divorce papers.

Ezekiel was still downstairs when I left. Still drinking. He didn't try to stop me.

I checked into a Midtown hotel at eleven-thirty that night. The lobby was bright and silent. The clerk didn't ask questions. I rode the elevator to the eighth floor and unlocked a room that smelled like lemon cleaner and nothing else.

I sat on the edge of the bed. The city hummed outside the window. I took out my copy of the divorce papers and read them start to finish. Every clause. Every signature line.

I ordered room service. A sandwich I didn't eat. I lay down fully clothed and stared at the ceiling until the sky started to lighten.

I didn't cry.

I didn't feel sad.

I felt nothing at all. And that, I realized, was the first honest thing I'd felt in nine years.
