My Husband Faked Mental Illness to Hide His Affair Chapter 1

I found it by accident.

Liam's car was blocking mine in the garage. He'd left the keys on the kitchen counter before heading upstairs to shower. I grabbed them without thinking, just planning to move his Tesla forward a few feet so I could get out in the morning.

The garage under our building was always too bright. White LED lights bouncing off concrete. My footsteps echoed. I unlocked the driver's side and slid in, and that's when I saw the dashcam indicator still blinking red on the windshield mount.

Liam was obsessive about turning it off. He hated the idea of being recorded, even by accident. But tonight he'd forgotten.

I reached for it. Then stopped.

There was something else on the center console. A bracelet. Gold, delicate, with a small charm I couldn't make out in the dim light. I picked it up. It was warm, like someone had been wearing it recently. The clasp was undone.

I turned it over in my fingers. I didn't recognize it. It wasn't mine. It wasn't his mother's style. It wasn't anything I'd ever seen before.

I set it down carefully, like it might burn me.

Then I pressed the button on the dashcam.

The screen lit up. The timestamp read earlier that evening, around six. Liam's voice came through the speakers, and I went very still.

He was laughing.

Not the tight, controlled sound he made at business dinners. Not the distant, distracted noise he made when I talked to him lately. This was easy. Warm. The kind of laugh I remembered from years ago, when we first started dating and he'd pull off his coat in the snow and wrap it around my shoulders.

"Georgia, you're terrible," he said, still laughing. "I can't believe you actually said that to him."

A woman's voice, light and teasing. "He deserved it. You should've seen his face."

"I wish I had." A pause. "You look beautiful tonight, by the way. I meant to say that earlier."

"You're just saying that because I let you pick the restaurant."

"I'm saying it because it's true."

I sat in the driver's seat with my hands in my lap. The recording kept playing. Fourteen minutes. I listened to all of it. Liam's voice stayed warm the entire time. Easy. Whole. There was no fracture. No shift. No moment where the tone went cold and flat, the way it did at home when his 'alternate' took over.

Just a man talking to a woman he wanted.

When the recording ended, I sat in the silence for a long time. The LED lights hummed overhead. My hands were shaking.

I thought about the bracelet on the console. I thought about the psychiatrist's office, the diagnosis Liam had brought home three years ago, the careful way Dr. Richards had explained Dissociative Identity Disorder to me. I thought about the prescription bottles in our medicine cabinet. I thought about every time Liam had gone cold and cruel and told me I was imagining things, that I was making his condition worse, that I needed to be more understanding.

I thought about the years I'd spent managing his moods. Reading books on trauma and dissociation. Telling myself the man I married was still in there, fighting to come back.

I picked up the bracelet again. Held it up to the light.

Then I put it back exactly where I'd found it, got out of the car, and went upstairs.

Liam was in the bedroom, toweling his hair dry. He smiled when he saw me. The warm smile. The real one.

"Hey," he said. "I thought you were asleep."

"Just moving your car," I said. My voice sounded normal. I was surprised by that. "You left it blocking mine."

"Oh, sorry. I'll do it in the morning."

"It's fine. I already did."

He came over and kissed my forehead. His skin smelled like expensive soap. "You're the best. I don't deserve you."

I looked up at him. At his easy smile. At the warmth in his eyes that I'd spent three years believing came and went because of an illness he couldn't control.

"No," I said quietly. "You don't."

He laughed, like I was joking, and went to hang up his towel.

I stood in the doorway and watched him move around the room. I thought about the recording. About Georgia's voice. About the bracelet coiled on the console like a snake.

I thought about Dr. Richards and his office and the way he'd looked at me when he explained that Liam's condition was manageable, that with the right medication and support, we could have a normal life.

I thought about the prescription bottles.

And I thought about the fact that in fourteen minutes of recorded conversation, Liam Wheeler had sounded more like himself than he had in three years of marriage.

I went to the closet and pulled down my overnight bag from the top shelf. I started packing. Not everything. Just enough.

Liam came out of the bathroom. "What are you doing?"

I looked at him. At the confusion on his face. At the performance of confusion.

"I need to visit my sister," I said. "Just for a few days."

"Now? It's almost eleven."

"I'll leave in the morning."

He frowned. Came closer. Put his hand on my shoulder. "Liv, what's wrong?"

I looked at his hand. Then at his face.

"Nothing," I said. "I'm fine."

He studied me for a long moment. Then nodded slowly. "Okay. If you're sure."

"I'm sure."

He kissed me again. Went to bed. Within twenty minutes, he was asleep.

I sat on the edge of the mattress in the dark and listened to him breathe.

Then I unpacked the bag and put it back in the closet.

I wasn't leaving yet.

Not until I knew exactly what I was leaving.
