My Husband Drugged Me During IVF Treatments Chapter 1

The call came at 7:43 on a Tuesday evening.

I was at the kitchen table with a cup of coffee going cold beside me, finishing the last panel of a spread I'd been working on all day. Rain hit the windows in sheets. Seattle in November.

"Mrs. Thomas?" A woman's voice, careful and professional. "This is Harborview Medical Center. Your husband was involved in a serious collision on I-5. He's being transported to our trauma unit now. You'll want to come in."

I remember setting down my pencil very slowly. Lining it up with the edge of my sketchbook.

"How serious?" I asked.

"ICU-level serious," she said. "Please come now."

I drove through the rain with my hands steady on the wheel and my mind doing what minds do in emergencies—running through logistics, filling in forms before they're in front of you. Ethan. Forty-one years old. No known allergies. Blood type O-positive. I knew all of it. Seven years of marriage and I knew everything about him.

Or I thought I did.

The trauma surgeon met me in a corridor that smelled like antiseptic and floor wax. Dr. Reyes. Young, tired, direct. He told me about the collision, about the other vehicle running a red at sixty miles an hour, about the internal bleeding they'd already addressed. He used words like stable and guarded and we'll know more by morning. I signed consent forms on a clipboard. My handwriting was neat.

They let me into the ICU room at 11 p.m.

Ethan looked smaller than I'd ever seen him. The monitors beeped in steady rhythm. Blue light from the equipment washed everything pale. I sat in the chair beside his bed and looked at his face—the face I'd woken up next to for seven years—and I felt the specific, hollow terror of almost losing someone you love.

I took his hand. His fingers were cool.

"You're okay," I told him. I don't know if I was telling him or myself.

I sat with him for hours. The nurses came and went. The rain kept hitting the window high up on the wall. Sometime around 2 a.m., the ward quieted down to just the monitors and the distant sound of a cart rolling somewhere down the hall.

That's when I noticed his phone.

It was on the bedside table, screen cracked along one corner from the crash, the case bent slightly out of shape. I picked it up because I needed to call his parents. Solomon and Ruthie Thomas, who lived in Bellevue and would want to know their son was in the ICU before they heard it some other way. I needed his contacts.

I lifted his hand from the blanket. Pressed his thumb to the sensor.

The phone unlocked.

I found his contacts, scrolled to his parents' names, set the call in motion. Ruthie answered on the third ring, half-asleep and then suddenly not. I gave her the same information Dr. Reyes had given me. She made a sound I won't describe. I told her the room number and hung up.

I was about to set the phone down when I saw the folder.

It sat one layer deep in his photo library. No name. Just a string of numbers—fourteen digits, the kind of label that isn't an accident. The kind you choose specifically because it looks like nothing.

I don't know why I opened it. Some instinct that had been waiting, maybe. Some part of me that had always known there was a door I hadn't found yet.

The first video loaded.

Ethan. On his knees on a hardwood floor. Wearing a collar—black leather, with a small silver ring at the throat. His hands were behind his back. A woman's voice, off-camera, said something I won't repeat, and my husband—my devoted, family-oriented husband who cried at our wedding and held my hand through every single IVF appointment—looked up at the camera and said, "Yes. I'm your dog."

I watched the whole thing.

Then I watched the next one. And the next.

There were dozens.

At some point I opened Venmo. Then our joint bank statements. The numbers arranged themselves into a story that was somehow worse than the videos. Eighty-five thousand dollars. Transferred in recurring payments to N. Martinez. The label on every single one: tribute.

Eighty-five thousand dollars.

Our fertility fund. Three years of injections and bloodwork and failed cycles and me lying on examination tables blaming my own body. Every dollar I had believed was building toward our child.

I set the phone down on my knee.

I looked at Ethan's face. The monitors beeped. The blue light held steady.

I didn't cry. Something shifted instead—somewhere behind my sternum, something cold and very precise clicked into place, like a lens finding its focus.

I picked the phone back up.

For the next four hours, I photographed everything. Every message thread, every transfer receipt, every video file, every contact. I worked methodically, room by room in my mind, the way I clean when something is wrong. By the time gray light started showing at the window, I had a complete archive saved to my own encrypted cloud.

Then I stepped into the hallway, found a quiet corner near the vending machines, and called Diana Cho.

Diana was Seattle's most aggressive divorce attorney. I'd heard her name at a gallery opening two years ago—someone had pointed her out across the room and said, quietly, that she was the woman you called when you wanted to win. I had stored that information without knowing why.

Now I knew why.

Her voicemail picked up. I left a message. My voice was calm. I gave her my name, my number, and three sentences about what I had found. I told her I would need to move quickly.

I went back to the room. Sat down in the chair. Took Ethan's cool hand in mine.

The monitors beeped. Outside, the rain had finally stopped.

I waited for him to wake up.
