My Husband Covered Up My Mother's Murder Chapter 1

The Plaza's Grand Ballroom glittered like a diamond-encrusted coffin, every crystal chandelier casting light across the sea of New York's elite in their evening finery. I stood near the back, a glass of untouched champagne in my hand, watching my father—Joseph Andrews—beam as he slid a platinum band onto Noor Moreno's finger. My mother had been dead for eighteen months. The earth over her grave had barely settled before he'd announced his engagement to the woman who'd warmed his bed for years. My stepmother. The word tasted like ash in my mouth.

I needed air. Space to breathe away the suffocating weight of three hundred curious stares. The whispers followed me as I slipped through the crowd—*Poor Peyton, so brave to attend, such dignity in heartbreak.* If only they knew how close I was to shattering.

Zane would understand. My husband, the man I'd given up everything for—my career, my fire, my very identity as New York's most celebrated Latin ballroom dancer. He'd been distant lately, preoccupied with work, but tonight he'd promised to be my anchor. I just needed to find him.

I made my way toward his private study, a sanctuary he kept at The Plaza for business meetings. The hallway was mercifully quiet, the distant sounds of celebration fading with each step. I needed his arms around me, his steady voice telling me I was strong enough to endure this humiliation.

I raised my hand to knock when I heard his voice from inside. Not the warm tone he used with me, but the cold, precise cadence he reserved for business calls.

"Yes, everything is proceeding as planned," Zane's voice carried through the heavy oak door. "Peyton remains... contained. The marriage has served its purpose. She's no longer a threat to Alianna's position."

My knuckles froze an inch from the wood. The champagne glass nearly slipped from my fingers.

"She suspects nothing," he continued, a note of something like satisfaction in his voice. "She believes I married her out of love. The irony is almost too perfect—she's so desperate for affection she never questioned why a man like me would want a woman like her."

The room tilted. My lungs forgot how to draw breath. *A woman like her.* The words carved themselves into my chest.

"Of course I've been managing the situation with her mother's death," Zane's voice grew colder, more clinical. "The official story holds. The medical records are sealed. Alianna's family has nothing to worry about. Peyton will never know the truth."

My mother's death. Not a sudden illness. Not the heart attack we'd been told. My fingernails dug into my palms, the sharp pain anchoring me as the world dissolved around me. I pressed my back against the wall, my legs threatening to give way.

"No, she doesn't suspect a thing," Zane said, and I could hear the smile in his voice. "She's too busy playing the dutiful wife, trying to please a husband who sees her as nothing but a problem to be managed."

Something broke inside me then—not with a crash, but with the quiet finality of a thread snapping after years of strain. The woman I'd been for Zane Bennett, the woman who'd buried herself alive for love, died in that hallway. In her place rose someone else. Someone with nothing left to lose.

I set the champagne glass down on a side table with deliberate care. My hands no longer trembled. I straightened my spine, smoothed the silk of my black dress, and walked back toward the ballroom with measured steps.

The emcee was in the middle of a toast, his voice booming through the speakers. "To Joseph and Noor, may their love story continue to inspire us all..."

I didn't slow down. I crossed the dance floor, climbed the small dais, and plucked the microphone from his startled hands. Three hundred faces turned toward me, curious, amused, expecting a gracious daughter's blessing.

"My father's love story," I began, my voice steady as a surgeon's scalpel, "began long before my mother's death. Alianna Moreno is not my stepsister. She's my half-sister—the product of a twenty-year affair conducted in the home my mother built."

The room went silent. Then erupted.
