My Husband Chose His Pregnant Mistress Over Me Chapter 1

Mrs. Carr's voice cut through the apartment like a blade. Sharp. Final.

"You're infertile, Adriana."

I stood in the middle of the living room—our living room, technically, though it had never felt like mine—and watched my mother-in-law's mouth move. The words landed somewhere in my chest, but they didn't sink in. Not yet. Behind her, Wesley shifted his weight from foot to foot, hands in his pockets, eyes fixed on the marble floor.

"Three years," Mrs. Carr continued. Her tone was clipped, rehearsed. "Three years of marriage, and nothing. The Carr family deserves better than this."

She gestured toward the kitchen counter. A document sat there, pages slightly askew, the letterhead of some medical clinic visible from where I stood. The fertility report. I'd seen it arrive in the mail two days ago. Wesley had opened it without me.

"You've failed us," Mrs. Carr said. "You've failed Wesley."

Wesley finally looked up. His face was tight, like he'd practiced this moment in front of a mirror. "We can't keep doing this, Adriana. My mother's right. We need to move forward."

Move forward. As if I were a stalled car blocking traffic.

I didn't say anything. I crossed the room slowly, my footsteps soundless on the expensive rug Wesley's mother had chosen when we moved in. She watched me approach the counter, her chin lifted, her hands folded in front of her like a judge delivering a sentence.

I picked up the report.

The pages were cool under my fingers. I read the first line. Then the second. My eyes moved down the page, taking in every word, every clinical phrase, every number.

**Patient Name: Wesley Carr.**

**Diagnosis: Severe oligospermia.**

I blinked. Read it again.

Severe oligospermia. Low sperm count. Significantly reduced fertility potential.

Wesley's name. Not mine.

I looked up. Mrs. Carr was still standing there, arms crossed now, waiting for me to break. Wesley had turned slightly toward the window, his jaw clenched, his shoulders rigid.

Neither of them had read it.

They'd seen the word *infertile* somewhere in the summary and made an assumption. They'd built an entire narrative on that assumption. And now they were dismantling my marriage with it.

I set the report down gently. Pulled my phone from my pocket. Opened the camera.

Mrs. Carr frowned. "What are you doing?"

I didn't answer. I photographed the first page. Then the second. Then the third. The shutter sound was soft, rhythmic. I made sure every line was visible, every word clear.

"Adriana," Wesley said. His voice had an edge now. "What are you—"

"I'm done," I said.

I set the report back on the counter, exactly where it had been. Then I walked past both of them, down the hallway, into the bedroom. I pulled a duffel bag from the closet and started packing. One drawer at a time. Methodical. Calm.

Wesley appeared in the doorway. "Where are you going?"

I folded a sweater. Placed it in the bag. "Somewhere else."

"You can't just leave."

I looked at him then. Really looked. At the man I'd married three years ago, the man I'd believed I knew. His face was flushed now, confused, like the script had gone off course and he didn't know his next line.

"Yes," I said quietly. "I can."

I zipped the bag. Slung it over my shoulder. Walked past him without touching him. Mrs. Carr was still in the living room when I passed through. She said something—something about responsibility, about consequences—but I didn't stop.

The apartment door closed behind me with a soft click.

---

Rachel's kitchen smelled like coffee and cinnamon. My older sister sat across from me, her hands wrapped around a ceramic mug, watching me with the same steady gaze she'd had since we were kids.

"You okay?" she asked.

I nodded. Set my phone on the table between us. "I need you to recommend an attorney."

Rachel didn't ask why. She pulled out her own phone, scrolled through her contacts, and sent me a name. "She's good. Aggressive when she needs to be."

"Good."

I opened my photos. Found the images of the report. Stared at Wesley's name printed across the top.

Rachel leaned forward slightly. "What is that?"

"Proof," I said.

She waited.

"Wesley's infertile," I said. "Not me. They didn't even read it."

Rachel's expression didn't change, but something flickered in her eyes. Something sharp and satisfied. She took a slow sip of her coffee. "What are you going to do?"

I saved the attorney's contact information. Set my phone down. Looked at my sister.

"Everything," I said.
