The envelope was small. Cream-colored, with a gold seal I'd pressed shut myself. Inside was a black-and-white photo, grainy, the size of a receipt. Eight weeks. A comma-shaped smudge that was going to be a person.

I'd practiced the reveal in my head all week. I'd wear the green dress Nolan liked, the one that made him stop talking mid-sentence. I'd walk into his office on the forty-first floor of Bishop Tower, past the receptionist who always waved me through because I was Mrs. Bishop, and I'd set the envelope on his desk without a word. Three years married. I wanted this anniversary to be the one we'd tell our kid about someday.

The elevator opened onto marble and glass. Quiet, this late. Most of the floor had gone home. I could see his door at the end of the hall, propped open an inch, light spilling out gold onto the carpet.

I didn't hear voices. That should have told me something. Nolan on a call was loud, decisive, always closing something. This was silence, and silence from Nolan never meant nothing.

I pushed the door open with two fingers.

He had her against the edge of his desk. One hand at her jaw, tilting her face up like he'd done it a hundred times. Dalia Munoz — twenty-four years old, the girl I'd pulled off a milk crate outside a soup kitchen four years ago, the girl I'd paid tuition for, the girl who called me *sis* in every voicemail — had her fingers curled into the front of his shirt like she owned the fabric.

It wasn't frantic. That was the part that stayed with me. It wasn't two people caught. It was two people who had done this before and would do it again.

The envelope slipped out of my hand. The photo slid free and landed face-up on the floor between us, that small gray comma staring up at the ceiling lights.

Dalia's eyes found mine over Nolan's shoulder. For one full second, before anything else happened on her face, she was perfectly still. Calm. Almost curious, the way you'd study a stain to see how deep it went. Then, like a switch flipped, her mouth crumpled and her eyes went bright and wet.

"Serenity — this isn't — I swear, it isn't what—"

She came toward me, hands out, like she meant to catch me, to explain, to hold me together. I felt her palms land flat on my shoulders. And then I felt the shove — sharp, precise, timed to the half-second Nolan turned his head away — and the stair rail was gone from under my hand and the world tipped sideways.

Marble doesn't forgive. I know that now. I felt every step on the way down, felt the exact moment the pain in my hip became a different, deeper pain low in my stomach, a pain that had nothing to do with the fall.

"My hand," Dalia said, somewhere above me, her voice gone thin and trembling. "Nolan, my hand—"

I watched his shoes cross the floor. Not toward me. Away.

"Let me see." His voice, low, careful, the voice he used to use on me. He turned her wrist over in his hands like it was made of glass. A thin red mark, already fading, ran across her knuckles. "We're getting you looked at. Now."

He didn't look down. Not once. He said something to an assistant I couldn't see — *handle it, call someone* — and then the elevator doors opened and closed, and the gold light kept spilling out of his office onto an empty hallway, and I was alone with the marble and the ultrasound photo lying somewhere out of reach.

Four minutes and thirty-seven seconds. I know because security gave me the timestamp later, like a receipt for what I'd lost.

The hospital room smelled like antiseptic and the particular sourness of grief nobody names out loud. I'd stopped being pregnant somewhere between the ambulance and the ultrasound tech's silence. Nobody had to tell me. I felt the exact moment it left me, a hollowing behind my navel that no anesthesia touched.

Dalia came in holding a paper container, steam curling off the top. "I brought soup. I thought — I know I'm probably the last person you want to see, but—"

Her hand was steady when she tipped it. I want that detail remembered. Steady, not shaking, when the broth hit the bandages on my forearms and I screamed.

Nolan came through the door at a run. He took in the room in one sweep — my face twisted, Dalia's tears already falling, her shoulders already shaking against nothing — and his jaw went hard.

"What is wrong with you?" His voice cracked across the room like a slap. "She came here to be *kind*, Serenity, and you—"

"She did it on purpose."

"Stop." He said it the way he ended board meetings. Final. Not up for discussion. "You lost the baby. I understand you're in pain. But this — this vicious, jealous thing you're doing right now — I don't recognize you."

Dalia pressed her face into his chest, and he curved his arm around her, his hand smoothing down her hair, murmuring something I couldn't hear and didn't need to.

I lay very still and felt something behind my eyes shut, quietly, like a door closing in a house nobody lives in anymore.

The prenup had been a joke to him once — a formality his lawyers insisted on, tossed at me on our wedding morning with a grin. *Sign it if it makes you feel better. You'll never use it.* I found it in the locked drawer where I'd kept it for three years, untouched, and I signed my name in ink that didn't shake.

He found it on the breakfast table two days after I came home. He read the first line, laughed — one short, dry sound — and set it down like a napkin.

"You're not going anywhere, Serenity." He said it gently, the way you'd correct a child. Then he picked up his coffee and left for work.

I watched the paper drift off the counter in the breeze from the closing door. I picked it up, smoothed the corner, and put it back in the drawer.

I didn't argue. I didn't cry.
