My Husband Brought His Mistress to My Mother’s Funeral Chapter 1

My mother collapsed at 6:14 p.m. I know because I was on the phone with her when it happened. One second she was telling me about the tomatoes on her windowsill, and the next there was a clatter, a long silence, and then nothing at all.

By the time I got to Seattle General, she was already behind double doors, and a doctor with tired eyes was telling me she needed surgery. Now. Tonight. Forty thousand dollars, he said, like it was a small number. Like I wouldn't feel it land in my chest like a dropped stone.

I called Darren from the hallway, my back against the cold tile wall, watching nurses move past in soft-soled shoes.

"Darren. It's Mom. I need you to wire the money, right now, I'll explain everything later, please—"

"Lylah." His voice was flat, almost bored. In the background I heard music, low and moody, the kind he put on when he wanted to feel like a different person. "You know I can't do that."

"What are you talking about, can't—Darren, she's dying—"

"I'm playing a character right now." He said it the way another man might say *I'm in a meeting.* "I'm broke. I don't have forty thousand dollars. That's the whole point, babe. If I break now, the whole thing falls apart. Weeks of work, gone."

I pressed my thumb hard against the inside of my ring finger, a habit I'd built without noticing, like the finger itself needed to be reminded it was still attached to a body that could feel things.

"This isn't a game," I said. "This is my mother."

"Everything's always the most important thing with you." A pause. I heard him exhale, almost amused. "You'll figure it out. You always do."

He hung up.

I stood there with the phone still against my ear, the dial tone humming into the quiet, and understood — not for the first time, but for the first time all the way down — that I had married a man who thought my mother's life was a prop he could refuse to pick up.

I spent that night in the corridor. I called banks. I called Darren's assistant, who apologized and said she wasn't authorized. I called two friends who could barely cover their own rent. Every door I tried was already locked, because Darren had made sure, over years, that every account had his name first and mine second, decorative, like a signature on a card nobody reads.

My mother died on the table the next morning, a little after nine. A nurse with kind eyes and a paper bracelet still on her own wrist from a double shift handed me a small plastic bag. A gold bracelet. A paperback with a cracked spine. Her reading glasses, one arm bent from years of being folded in a hurry.

I didn't cry. I sat in a plastic chair in the hallway and put the glasses in my coat pocket, and closed my hand around the bracelet until the metal left a mark, and I stayed like that for a long time, long enough that the light through the window changed color.

---

Three days later, we buried her.

The chapel was small, white, quiet — the kind of place my mother would have chosen for herself, no excess, nothing that asked to be looked at. I stood at the memorial table beside her photograph, the one where she's laughing at something off-camera, wearing the cardigan she wore until it was more thread than sweater.

Darren arrived forty minutes late.

He walked in like a man attending a gallery opening, and Monica Torres was on his arm in a cream blazer, her heels clicking too loudly against the chapel floor. A few mourners looked away. Mrs. Alvarez, I thought bitterly, though I hadn't used that name in my own head in a long time.

Darren came straight to the table. He didn't look at the photograph. He reached into his jacket and slid a manila envelope across the wood, next to my mother's smiling face, so close the corner of it touched the frame.

"Probably the right time for a fresh start," he said. Light. Reasonable. Like he was doing me a favor.

His fourth divorce agreement in two years.

He tilted his head slightly, the way he always did, waiting to watch something in me break.

I looked down at the envelope. At my mother's glasses, a small weight in my coat pocket. At the bracelet on my wrist, still warm from my own skin.

I picked up the pen.

I didn't look at him. I didn't cry. I signed my name the way I always sign it — full, careful, unhurried, Lylah Margaret Bennett — because some habits are the last thing grief leaves you.

I set the pen down. I picked up my mother's portrait, and I picked up the suitcase I'd packed that morning without letting myself think about why.

And I walked out.

Behind me, I heard Monica murmur something low into Darren's ear.

I didn't look back to see his face. For the first time in our marriage, I didn't need to.
