My Husband and His Mistress Stole My Inheritance Chapter 1

I stood back to admire my handiwork, my breath catching as the soft glow of candles danced across the walls of our Manhattan brownstone. Evergreen garlands twisted up the staircase banister, their scent mingling with the cinnamon and clove from the kitchen. This was supposed to be our perfect Christmas Eve—just Greyson and me, the way we'd planned it since October. I adjusted the final ornament on the tree, a delicate crystal snowflake that caught the light like ice on fire. The wrapped gift for Greyson sat beneath it, a vintage watch I'd found in an antique shop in the West Village, the one he'd mentioned admiring months ago. He'd been so busy lately, always traveling, always working late. Tonight was going to be different. Tonight was ours.

My phone buzzed against the marble countertop. I wiped my hands on a dish towel and reached for it, expecting a text from Greyson saying he was on his way home. Instead, a bank notification flashed across the screen: 'Transfer Complete: $5,000,000.00.' My heart stuttered. That couldn't be right. I blinked, reading it again. Five million dollars. In my account. I was still staring at the screen when I heard the front door open.

'Meredith.' Greyson's voice carried that particular tone—the one that used to make my pulse quicken but lately had begun to make my stomach tighten. He appeared in the doorway, but he wasn't alone. A woman with glossy black hair and a dress that probably cost more than my monthly grocery budget was draped on his arm. Demi Lopez. I'd seen her at charity events, always orbiting Greyson like a satellite. Tonight, she wore a smile that made my blood run cold.

'I see you got the notification,' Greyson said, his eyes never leaving mine as he guided Demi into our living room. She sank onto my sofa—the one we'd picked out together on our first anniversary—with the casual ownership of someone who already belonged there. Behind them, I could see more people filing in through the front door, champagne flutes in hand, laughter floating up from the foyer. Our home was filling with strangers.

'I don't understand,' I said, my voice sounding distant even to my own ears. 'Greyson, what's happening?'

He stepped closer, and I caught the scent of his cologne—the one I'd given him last Christmas. 'The five million is your severance, Meredith. Consider it generous.' His voice was measured, clinical. 'Our marriage is over.'

The room tilted. 'What? But we—you can't just—'

'I can, and I have.' He gestured to the papers on the coffee table—documents I'd signed months ago, trusting his explanations about estate management and art authentication. 'You signed the authorization for the sale of the Hamilton Collection yourself. Every painting, every sculpture. All sold through private channels. Very profitable.' He smiled, but it never reached his eyes. 'You should have read the fine print.'

Demi laughed, the sound like breaking glass. 'Oh, sweetie. Did you really think he loved you?' She reached up to touch the pearl earrings hanging from her lobes—my grandmother's pearls, the ones Greyson had helped me choose from the family vault on our wedding day. 'He was always going to take everything. You were just the key to the safe.'

'Meredith.' Uncle Evan's voice cut through the chaos. He stepped out from the crowd, his familiar face a betrayal I hadn't prepared for. 'It's time to go.'

'Uncle Evan? You're part of this?' My voice cracked. He wouldn't meet my eyes, but he nodded to the security team that had materialized near the door.

Two men in dark suits moved toward me. One of them held my coat. The other gestured to the exit.

'You can't do this,' I whispered, but even as I said it, I knew they could. They were.

The last thing I saw as they escorted me out was Greyson's face, watching me with the detached curiosity of a scientist observing a specimen. Demi's laughter followed me into the hallway, mingling with the sound of clinking glasses and holiday music.

They deposited me on the frozen sidewalk outside our brownstone. The December air hit my face like a slap, and I wrapped my coat tighter around me, shivering not from cold but from the sudden, absolute emptiness inside my chest. Through the bay window, I could see the party continuing—our home transformed into a celebration of my erasure.

I walked. Block after block, the city lights blurred through my tears. My phone felt heavy in my pocket, but I couldn't bring myself to call anyone. Who would I even call? Greyson had been my world, my family, my everything. Now I was alone on Christmas Eve, with nothing but a bank account full of blood money and a heart that felt like it had been hollowed out with a spoon.

Eventually, I found myself in front of a motel with a flickering neon sign. The room was cheap, clean enough, and most importantly, empty. I sat on the edge of the bed, still wearing my coat, and stared at the water stain on the ceiling. In the silence, something inside me finally broke. I pressed my thumb to the inside of my wrist—a habit from childhood, a way to ground myself when the world became too much. And then, for the first time since I was a little girl who had lost her parents, I cried without sound, without movement, without hope.
