My Fiancé Left Me at the Altar, So I Married a Billionaire Chapter 1

The coordinator tapped her clipboard. "Five minutes until showtime."

"Understood." I smoothed the heavy silk of my custom gown.

Graduating from a top Parisian university and returning to New York meant one thing: this perfect day. A CEO fiancé. Supportive parents. An enviable life. Everything was mapped out perfectly.

The oak doors swung open. My mother rushed in, her face pale.

"He is gone." She clutched her pearl necklace.

"Who?"

"Kalen." My mother locked the door behind her. "His suite is completely empty."

"That is impossible." I grabbed my phone from the vanity. "He was just here an hour ago. We took photos."

"The groomsmen have not seen him since the photographer left." My mother paced the room. "The guests are seated, Ruby. The mayor is out there. The governor is out there. What do we do?"

"I will call him."

"What if he doesn't answer?"

"He will answer."

I hit the video call button. It rang, the sound echoing in the silent room.

He answered on the fourth ring.

The background wasn't his dressing room. Blue signs hung from the ceiling. French text. Roissy-Charles de Gaulle Airport.

"Kalen." I squeezed the phone. "Where are you?"

He stared at the screen. He refused to speak.

A woman leaned into the frame. Bella. Her eyes were puffy, her makeup smeared.

"My leg hurts again," Bella whined, grabbing his lapel. "I just want to escape this place."

She ignored my face on the screen and looked directly at him. "If you really love me, you will come with me."

I waited for him to pull away. To tell her the wedding was starting. To tell her she was being ridiculous.

He stayed perfectly still.

"Kalen," I warned, my voice dropping an octave. "Do not do this."

"She needs me, Ruby." He finally met my gaze through the lens. "Her injury is acting up. She is entirely alone here."

"I am standing here in a wedding dress. Four hundred people are sitting in the ballroom waiting for us."

"You are strong, Ruby. You will handle them."

"Do not put this on me. You are abandoning our wedding."

"I am sorry. I have to go."

"If you hang up, we are done. Forever."

He hesitated. His eyes flickered with guilt. But then Bella whimpered again, leaning her head on his shoulder.

"Goodbye, Ruby."

The call disconnected.

I stared at the black screen. A laugh escaped my lips. A dry, hollow sound.

My mother stopped pacing. "What happened?"

"He is in Paris." I tossed the phone onto the vanity. "With Bella."

The door opened again. My father stepped inside. His shoulders sagged.

"The entire ballroom knows," he announced, his voice tight. "A reporter caught him at the terminal. The photos are already circulating."

"They are laughing at us?" my mother asked, her voice trembling.

"They are tearing us apart." My father rubbed his temples. "Thirty years of building the Miller name, ruined in an afternoon."

I walked out of the suite and stood on the mezzanine balcony.

The grand hall buzzed with vicious whispers.

"Dumped for the ex-girlfriend." A woman in a red dress smirked.

"The Millers are finished." A man next to her chuckled.

My jaw clenched. They wanted a tragedy. They wanted to see me break.

A soft piano melody floated through the toxic air.

I looked toward the corner of the ballroom. A man sat at the grand piano. He wore a tailored black suit. His posture was rigid, his expression indifferent. He commanded the space, yet no one paid him any attention.

A hired musician.

I grabbed the heavy silk of my skirt.

"Ruby, where are you going?" my father demanded.

"To fix this."

I descended the sweeping staircase. The whispers grew louder as I approached the floor.

I ignored the mocking stares. I walked straight toward the piano.

I slammed my hand onto the keys. A harsh, discordant noise echoed through the room. The whispers stopped instantly.

The man paused his playing. He looked up at me. His eyes were dark, piercing, and entirely calm.

"Sir," I said, keeping my chin high.

"Yes?" His voice was a low, smooth baritone.

"Are you currently engaged?"

A faint smirk touched his lips. "No."

"Good. Stand up."

He didn't move. "Why would I do that?"

"Because I need a groom." I pointed to the empty archway at the front of the room. "And you are already wearing a tuxedo."

"I am hired to play the piano, Miss Miller. Not to play the husband."

"I will triple whatever they are paying you."

"Money is not an issue for me."

I gripped the edge of the piano. "Then what is? Look around. They are waiting for me to run out of here in tears. They want my family destroyed."

"And how does marrying me solve that?"

"It changes the story. If you are willing to help me this once, I will spend the rest of my life repaying you."

He studied my face. His gaze dragged from my desperate eyes down to the intricate lace of my dress, then back up.

"You want a stranger to take Kalen Thorne's place."

"I want a man who won't run away." I leaned closer. "I refuse to be the punchline of tomorrow's news."

He tilted his head. "The rest of your life is a very long time to owe a debt."

"I keep my promises."

"Even absurd ones?"

"Especially those."

He stood up. He towered over me, his presence suddenly overwhelming. He buttoned his jacket.

"Simon Mercer," he said, offering his arm. "Let us give them a show."

I looped my arm through his. We walked down the aisle together.

The guests stared in stunned silence. The mocking smiles vanished.

My father hurried to the altar, his eyes wide. "Ruby, who is this?"

"My groom," I stated.

The priest cleared his throat. "Miss Miller, are we proceeding?"

"We are." I looked at Simon. "We are ready."

The ceremony began. Simon held my hands. His grip was firm, grounding me in the chaos.

"Do you, Simon, take Ruby to be your lawfully wedded wife?"

"I do." He never broke eye contact. His dark eyes held a silent promise.

"Do you, Ruby, take Simon to be your lawfully wedded husband?"

I looked at the crowd. My father was sweating. My mother was gripping her purse. The guests were leaning forward, waiting for a mistake.

I looked back at Simon.

"I do."

"I now pronounce you husband and wife."

Simon leaned in. His lips brushed mine. A brief, electrifying touch that sent a jolt straight to my core.

The crowd erupted into frantic applause. The narrative had shifted. I wasn't the abandoned bride anymore. I was the woman who replaced New York's top CEO without batting an eye.

I looked at the cameras flashing around us.

Somewhere in Paris, Kalen Thorne probably thought I was crying in a dressing room. He probably thought I would wait for him to return.

He had no idea.

He had walked away from his fiancée.

And now, I was already someone else's wife.
