My Fiancé Hung Up While I Died Chapter 1

The call came at two in the morning.

I was still in the back of the town car, halfway from JFK to Manhattan, when my phone lit up with Collin's name. I'd been awake for thirty-six hours straight. The Tokyo negotiations had run long, then longer, then bled into a second day of revisions and handshakes and forced smiles over conference room sushi. My eyes burned. My shoulders ached. I wanted a shower and my own bed and eight uninterrupted hours of nothing.

I answered anyway.

"Come to the penthouse." His voice was flat. No greeting. No question.

"I just landed," I said quietly. "Can it wait until—"

"No."

The line went dead.

I redirected the driver.

Twenty minutes later, I stood in Collin Lynch's living room, still wearing my wrinkled travel blazer, my carry-on bag at my feet. The space was all glass and steel and cold ambient lighting, the kind of apartment that appeared in architectural magazines under headlines like "The New Luxury." It never felt like a home. It felt like a showroom.

Collin stood at the floor-to-ceiling windows, his back to me, a crystal tumbler of whiskey in one hand. The city glittered below him, forty stories of indifference.

"Harlow's being released," he said without turning around. "Friday."

I didn't move. Didn't speak. I'd known this was coming. Her sentence had always been short, the kind of slap-on-the-wrist punishment that people with the right last names received for financial improprieties that would have buried anyone else. Still, hearing it out loud felt like the floor dropping away.

"I need you to draft a termination protocol," he continued, his tone the same one he used in board meetings. Efficient. Unemotional. "Something clean. We'll phase out the engagement narrative over the next two weeks. No drama. No public statements. Just a quiet dissolution."

I watched the back of his head. His hair was slightly too long, the way it got when he was busy. I used to remind him to schedule a cut. I didn't anymore.

"Is that what you want?" My voice came out steadier than I expected.

He took a sip of whiskey. "Yes."

He still hadn't looked at me.

I stood there for another moment, waiting for something I couldn't name. An apology. A hesitation. A flicker of the man I'd once believed I knew.

Nothing came.

"I'll have it ready by Monday," I said.

I picked up my bag and left.

The apartment Collin had provided was twelve blocks south, a tasteful two-bedroom with river views and furniture I hadn't chosen. I let myself in and set my bag down in the entryway. The silence was enormous.

I didn't turn on the lights.

I sat on the sofa in the dark for a long time, hands folded in my lap, breathing in and out like it was something I had to remember how to do.

Then I stood up.

I walked into the bedroom and opened the closet. The Cartier boxes were stacked neatly on the top shelf. The Hermès bags hung in a row, dust bags intact, tags still attached to some of them. Gifts I'd never asked for. Gifts I'd accepted because refusing them felt like rejecting him.

I pulled them down one by one.

I found packing boxes in the storage closet and began filling them with surgical precision. The diamond bracelet he'd given me on our first anniversary — the anniversary of an engagement that was never real. The Birkin bag I'd carried to exactly two events because it felt like wearing someone else's skin. The keys to this apartment, dropped into a small envelope and sealed.

I labeled each box in black permanent marker. *Cartier. Hermès. Apartment 14C.*

No note. No explanation.

By four in the morning, the apartment looked like I'd never lived there at all.

I made a single phone call.

Diana Ashford answered on the second ring, her voice alert despite the hour. She was the kind of lawyer who slept four hours a night and billed the rest.

"I need you to pull everything," I said. "Every Wallace asset currently held in or connected to Lynch Enterprises. I want a full extraction plan on my desk by noon."

There was a pause. Then: "How fast?"

"Before Friday."

Another pause, longer this time. "That's aggressive."

"That's the timeline."

"Understood," Diana said. "I'll start now."

I hung up and looked around the empty apartment one last time.

Then I called a car.

Two hours later, I sat across from Grandmother Lynch in her private sitting room, a delicate porcelain teacup balanced on my knee. She was eighty-three years old, silver-haired and sharp-eyed, and she had never once been fooled by anything in her entire life.

"You're leaving," she said. It wasn't a question.

"Yes."

She nodded slowly, as if confirming something she'd already known. She reached into the drawer of the side table and withdrew a cream-colored envelope, sealed with wax.

"I opened a door for you three years ago," she said, sliding it across the table. "It remains open."

I picked up the envelope. Inside were letters of introduction to three of London's most powerful investment networks, written in her precise, elegant hand. At the bottom, a single line: *Use it when you're ready.*

"Thank you," I said quietly.

Her eyes softened for just a moment. Then the sharpness returned.

"He's a fool," she said. "But you already know that."

I tucked the envelope into my bag and stood.

"Yes," I said. "I do."
