My Fiancé Hid His Wife Until I Was Pregnant Chapter 1

I sat at the dining table with three hundred envelopes spread out in front of me. The stamps were on. The guest list was final. I had been working on this moment for three years—longer, if I counted the mood board I started before Killian even proposed. I ran my thumb over the top envelope. Mr. and Mrs. Killian Morgan. My new name. My future.

Killian poured himself a drink at the bar cart. Scotch. Neat. He didn't usually drink on weeknights. I looked up at him and smiled. "Almost done," I said. "Just need to seal these and drop them at the post office tomorrow."

He nodded. He didn't smile back. He carried his glass to the table and sat down across from me. The light from the pendant lamp made his face look tired. He set the glass down carefully, like he was placing something fragile.

"Aviana," he said. "We need to talk."

I felt something cold move through my chest. Those words. No one ever said those words before good news. I put down the envelope I was holding. "Okay," I said quietly. "What's wrong?"

He looked at me for a long moment. Then he said, very calmly, "I have a wife."

I blinked. I didn't understand. "What?"

"A legal wife," he said. "In North Carolina. Her name is Selena Barnes. We got married when I was twenty-three. It was a family thing. Pressure. You know how those old-money families are."

I stared at him. The words were in English. I understood each one individually. But together they didn't make sense. "You're married," I said slowly.

"On paper," he said. "It doesn't mean anything. I left North Carolina right after. I built my life here. I built my life with you. But legally, yes. I never got it dissolved."

I felt like the floor had opened up under my chair. Six years. We had been together for six years. We lived together. We planned a wedding. I had addressed three hundred invitations with our names on them. And the entire time, he had a wife.

"You lied to me," I whispered.

"I didn't lie," he said. "I just didn't tell you. It's not the same thing."

I stood up. My legs felt weak. "You didn't tell me you were married, Killian. For six years. That's lying."

He sighed. He rubbed the back of his neck. "I know this is a shock. But we can handle it. We keep it quiet. No one in New York knows about Selena. We go ahead with the wedding. Everything stays the same."

I looked at him. Really looked at him. He wasn't apologizing. He was negotiating. He thought this was something we could just manage. Like a scheduling conflict.

"Everything stays the same?" I repeated. My voice cracked. "Killian, you have a wife."

"A wife I don't see. A wife I don't love. A legal formality I should have dealt with years ago." He leaned forward. "Aviana, I love you. That's real. This thing with Selena—it's paperwork. That's all it is."

I felt something break inside me. Not loudly. Quietly. Like ice cracking under weight. I turned and walked to the bathroom. I locked the door behind me. I sat on the edge of the tub and put my face in my hands.

I didn't cry. I couldn't. I just sat there, breathing, trying to understand how my entire life had just collapsed in the space of five minutes.

Then I remembered. The pregnancy test. I had bought it two weeks ago and shoved it in the back of the cabinet. I had been too scared to take it. Too scared of what it might mean. Now I pulled it out with shaking hands. I tore open the box. I took the test.

I sat on the cold tile floor and waited. Three minutes. The longest three minutes of my life. When I looked down, there were two lines. Clear. Unmistakable. Positive.

I was pregnant. With the baby of a man who had just told me he had a wife.

I sat there holding the test. I couldn't move. I couldn't think. I just stared at those two lines and felt the world shrink down to nothing.

Three days later, my phone rang while I was at work. It was Dr. Patel. My mother's oncologist. I stepped out of the office and took the call in the stairwell.

"Aviana," she said gently. "I'm calling about your mother's recent scans."

I gripped the railing. "What did they show?"

"Stage IV pancreatic cancer. Advanced. Aggressive. I'm so sorry."

I felt my knees go weak. "How long?"

"Four to eight weeks. Maybe less."

I drove to my mother's apartment. I didn't remember the drive. I just remember standing at her door, knocking, and then she opened it and she was dressed neatly, hair brushed, standing straight. She smiled at me. A small, tired smile.

"I know," she said quietly. "Dr. Patel called me first."

I stepped inside. I wanted to hold her. I wanted to fall apart. But she was so calm. So steady. She sat down at the kitchen table and folded her hands.

"I just need to see you walk down that aisle, baby," she said. Her voice was soft but firm. "That's all I need. I need to see you marry Killian. I need to know you're going to be happy."

I felt something twist in my chest. She didn't know. She didn't know about Selena. She didn't know about the lie I had been living. And I couldn't tell her. Not now. Not when she had weeks left and this was the only thing she wanted.

I swallowed hard. I nodded. "Okay," I whispered. "Okay, Mom."

That night, I went back to the apartment. Killian was in the living room. I stood in the doorway and looked at him. He looked up at me, waiting.

"I'll do it," I said. My voice was steady. Flat. "I'll go through with the wedding."

Relief flooded his face. "Aviana, thank you. I promise—"

"I'm not doing it for you," I said quietly. "I'm doing it for my mother."

I turned and walked to the bedroom. I closed the door behind me. I sat on the edge of the bed and pressed my hands together to stop them from shaking. I didn't cry. I didn't scream. I just sat there in the dark, feeling the weight of everything I was carrying, and wondering how much longer I could hold it before it crushed me completely.
