My Fiancé Gave My Work to His Mistress Chapter 1

The ballroom looked like someone had spent a fortune making it look effortless. White lights hung from the ceiling in rows. The tables had flowers and candles. Everyone wore their best suits and dresses. I sat at table seven with my team, a glass of champagne I hadn't touched in front of me.

Damien stood on the stage under a spotlight. He looked perfect. Navy suit, crisp white shirt, hair combed back the way I always told him looked good. He smiled at the room like he owned it. Maybe he did now. Director. They'd announced his promotion two weeks ago. I'd been so proud.

"Before we announce this year's Innovation Award," he said into the microphone, his voice smooth and confident, "I need to address a conflict of interest."

The room went quiet. I felt my colleague Sarah shift beside me.

"As many of you know, I'm engaged to Whitney Palmer, one of our senior strategists." He gestured toward my table. Heads turned. I kept my face neutral, pleasant. "Whitney submitted an exceptional proposal this year. Truly exceptional work."

I waited for him to say my name. To call me up.

"However, given my new role and our relationship, it wouldn't be appropriate for me to oversee an award decision involving my fiancée. So after careful consideration with the executive team, we've decided to recognize another outstanding submission."

My chest tightened. The champagne glass felt cold under my fingers.

"This year's Innovation Award, along with the twenty-thousand-dollar bonus and the Silicon Valley fellowship, goes to Zaria Snyder."

The room erupted in applause. A young woman stood up three tables away. She wore a red dress that probably cost more than my rent. She looked twenty-five, maybe twenty-six. I'd seen her around. New intern. She walked to the stage with a smile that showed all her teeth.

Damien handed her the glass trophy. She leaned in and kissed his cheek. The applause got louder.

Sarah touched my arm. "Whitney, I'm so sorry. That's—"

"It's fine," I said quietly. My voice came out steady. "Conflict of interest. It makes sense."

But it didn't make sense. I'd worked on that proposal for four months. I'd built a new analytical framework from scratch. I'd run the data models seventeen times until they were flawless. Damien had read drafts. He'd asked questions. He'd told me it was brilliant.

I watched Zaria hold the trophy up for photos. Damien stood beside her, his hand on her lower back.

I picked up my champagne and took a sip. It tasted like nothing.

---

The morning came too bright through the windows of our Tribeca apartment. I made coffee and waited for Damien to wake up. He came into the kitchen at nine, still in his pajama pants, looking pleased with himself.

"Big night," he said, kissing the top of my head. "You okay? I know the conflict of interest thing was awkward."

"I need to ask you something."

He poured himself coffee. "Sure."

"Zaria's proposal. The one that won."

"Yeah, it was really strong. I was impressed."

I set my mug down carefully. "It used my framework. The regression model I built for consumer behavior prediction. The one I showed you in March."

Damien's face didn't change. "I'm sure there are similarities. You both work in strategy. There's overlap."

"Not similarities. The exact same model. The same variables. The same weighting system."

He sighed and leaned against the counter. "Whit, listen. Zaria's father was a mentor to me early in my career. He helped me get my foot in the door at Apex. I owe him. When Zaria asked for guidance on her proposal, I gave her some direction. That's all."

"You gave her my work."

"I gave her guidance." His voice got firmer. "And honestly? This jealousy isn't a good look. I know you're disappointed, but taking it out on that woman—"

"That woman?"

"—isn't fair. She earned that fellowship."

I looked at him. Really looked at him. At the face I'd woken up next to for five years. The face I'd trusted more than any other.

I saw a stranger.

"I'm staying at a hotel tonight," I said.

"Whitney, come on—"

"Just tonight. I need space."

I packed a bag while he watched from the bedroom doorway. I took my laptop. I took the external hard drive I kept in my desk drawer. I took my files.

I didn't take the ring off. Not yet.

---

Two days later, I came back to the office to get documents I'd left in my desk. It was late afternoon. Most people had gone home.

I walked past the executive floor on my way to the elevator. Damien's new corner office had glass walls and a door that wasn't fully closed.

I heard laughter. A woman's voice, light and flirtatious. Then Damien.

"You're terrible," Zaria said.

"You're the one who wore that dress," Damien replied.

I stopped walking.

"Do you think she suspects?" Zaria asked.

"Whitney?" Damien laughed. It was a sound I'd heard a thousand times. It had never sounded like this. "She was just the ladder I climbed to get here. She's a workhorse, not a racehorse. She'll be fine."

More laughter. The sound of a chair moving. Murmured words I couldn't hear.

I stood in the hallway for ten seconds. Maybe fifteen. Then I walked to the elevator. I pressed the button. I went down to the lobby. I walked outside into the October cold.

I didn't cry.

I went to my hotel room. I opened my laptop. I logged into the encrypted cloud drive where I backed up every file, every draft, every email.

I pulled the proposal I'd submitted. I pulled the timestamps. I pulled the revision history. I pulled the access logs showing every time Damien had opened my files on the shared server.

I made a fresh pot of coffee. Black, no sugar.

And I got to work.
