My Fated Mate Expelled Me for His Mistress’s Lies Chapter 1

Five years. That's how long I'd waited for tonight.

I stood in front of the small cracked mirror in my quarters at the back of the Ironvale pack house and smoothed the front of my dress one more time. It was a simple navy dress. Nothing fancy. I didn't own anything fancy. But I had brushed my hair until it shone, and I'd dabbed a single drop of the night-blooming jasmine oil behind my ear — the one small piece of myself I'd never been able to fully lock away.

My wolf paced under my skin, restless and warm. *Tonight,* she whispered. *He'll say it tonight.*

I let myself believe her. One last time.

My name is Blake Thornewood. To the Ironvale Pack, I am a quiet she-wolf who lives in a small room, does modest work, and occasionally helps with strategy. To my father, Lycan King Kingsley Thornewood, I am the daughter who walked out of a palace to prove that love could exist without a crown. And to Gideon Vargas, Alpha of Ironvale — my fated mate by the Moon Goddess's own design — I am the woman who has stood at his shoulder for five years, waiting for him to breathe deep enough to notice.

Tonight was the Pack Banquet. Tonight, he was supposed to announce my promotion to lead strategist. Tonight, in front of every Ironvale wolf, he was supposed to claim me.

I walked down the corridor with my hands folded loosely at my waist and my chin steady. The banquet hall glowed with strung lanterns. Long tables lined the walls. Pack members turned when I entered, some smiling politely, most looking past me the way they always had.

And then I saw them.

Gideon stood at the head of the room, tall and broad in his dark jacket, the Alpha ring flashing on his hand. Beside him, so close their arms touched, stood a she-wolf I had only recently learned to hate.

Lilia Chapman.

She had arrived in Ironvale two months ago with a bright laugh and a training résumé no one had bothered to verify. Tonight, she wore a cream-colored dress that fit her like it had been sewn on her body. And around her neck, resting against her collarbone, was a moonstone pendant.

I knew that pendant. Every she-wolf in the pack knew that pendant. It was the kind of thing an Alpha traded a full season's hunt tribute for.

Her hand rested on Gideon's forearm. Comfortable. Familiar. Owning.

My wolf went very still.

I kept walking. I told myself there was an explanation. I told myself he would look up, see me, and something inside him would finally click into place. I crossed the hall, my flats quiet on the wood floor, and stopped a respectful step away from him.

"Gideon," I said softly. "Congratulations on tonight. The hall looks beautiful."

He turned. And the look he gave me was not the look of a man about to claim his mate.

It was cold. Flat. The kind of look you give a stranger who has walked into the wrong room.

"Blake." His voice cut across the hall, pitched loud enough for every wolf to hear. "You have some nerve showing up here."

The murmur of conversation died.

I blinked. "I'm sorry?"

"Don't play innocent." His jaw tightened. "I know what you've been doing. Taking credit for training work that wasn't yours. Passing off Lilia's contributions as your own for weeks. Did you really think I wouldn't hear?"

My throat closed.

"Gideon — that's not — "

"There will be no promotion announcement tonight." His voice was measured, controlled, the practiced Alpha register he used when he wanted to sound fair. "Ironvale doesn't reward thieves."

Beside him, Lilia's mouth pulled down in a soft, wounded frown. Her hand tightened on his arm. The moonstone caught the lantern light.

I opened my mouth. I don't remember what I meant to say.

He picked up the wine glass in front of him. He looked me in the eyes. And he threw it.

The liquid hit my face cold and sharp. Red wine, thick and slow, running down my cheeks, into the collar of my navy dress, dripping onto the floor between my shoes.

The hall went absolutely silent.

I didn't move. I didn't wipe my face. I didn't blink.

Inside me, my wolf howled — a sound so raw it felt like it was tearing something loose from my ribs. But on the outside, I stood perfectly still, wine sliding down my jaw, and looked at the man who was supposed to be mine.

He looked back at me without a flicker.

Lilia leaned into his shoulder. Her fingers rose to touch the moonstone at her throat.

I turned around and walked out of the hall.

---

My quarters were dark. I didn't turn on the lamp. I sat on the edge of my narrow bed with the wine drying on my skin and reached down the mind-link — our mind-link, the private channel we had shared for five years.

*Gideon.*

Nothing.

*Gideon. Please.*

Nothing.

I reached again, harder, and the channel — that familiar warmth I had leaned into a thousand nights — was gone. Not silent. Closed. He had blocked me.

I sat in the dark with my palm pressed flat against the locked drawer of my nightstand. Inside was a small vial of jasmine oil and five years of things I had never once asked him for.

I breathed in. Breathed out.

And for the first time, deep in my chest, something small and stubborn cracked.

---

The days after moved past me like water.

Lilia was everywhere. At morning pack runs, jogging just behind Gideon's shoulder. At the breakfast table, laughing softly at something he'd said. At the strategy meetings I was no longer invited to. She wore the moonstone pendant every day.

On the third morning, I overheard two Deltas by the kitchen doorway.

"— traded a full season's hunt tribute for it, I'm telling you. My cousin was on the courier run."

"A full season? For a necklace?"

"He wanted the best."

I stood very still in the corridor with my coffee cup between my hands.

A full season's hunt tribute. The same tribute Gideon had told me, quietly, gently, one winter evening two years ago, could not be spent on "luxuries during lean months" — when I had once, only once, pointed at a smaller pendant in a shop window and said it was pretty.

I did not react. I walked into the strategy hall and sat at my usual corner table, and when Lilia entered a few minutes later with Gideon at her elbow, she looked directly at me and lifted her hand to adjust the pendant at her throat.

I traced the rim of my cup with one fingertip.

Once. Twice.

I understood, then, with a cold and quiet precision, that none of this was coincidence.

And I understood something else, too, sitting there in the corner while my mate laughed at something another woman said.

I had been very, very wrong about the shape of the world.
