My Ex Watched Me Marry His Powerful Uncle Chapter 1

The Plaza glittered like a jewelry box tipped on its side. Chandeliers dripped light across marble floors. Women in gowns that cost more than cars drifted past in clouds of perfume. Men in tuxedos clustered near the bar, laughing too loud.

I stood near the silent auction tables and accepted a glass of champagne from a passing waiter. The stem was cool against my palm. I didn't drink. I just needed something to hold.

One year. One year since I'd walked out of Gage Hudson's apartment and never looked back. One year since I'd stopped being the girl who bled herself dry for a man who thought love was a game you could win.

I studied a diamond bracelet under glass. Estate sale. The card said it belonged to some socialite from the twenties. I wondered if she'd been happy. I wondered if anyone here was.

"Stella."

I knew that voice. I'd heard it in my sleep for months after I left. Smooth. Confident. The voice of a man who'd never been told no and didn't plan to start now.

I turned.

Gage Hudson stood three feet away, hands in his pockets, smirking like we were old friends running into each other at Starbucks. Lorelai Jensen stood beside him in a red dress cut low enough to be a statement. Her hand rested on his arm. Her smile was sharp.

"I didn't expect to see you here," Gage said. His eyes moved over me—my dress, my hair, my empty hands. Looking for something. "These events aren't really... your scene."

I said nothing.

Lorelai tilted her head. Her voice dripped with concern. "I just worry about you, showing up to these things alone. It's so brave." She pitched it loud enough for the couple browsing the auction table beside us to hear. The woman glanced over. "Are you doing okay? Really?"

I met Lorelai's gaze. Then Gage's. I let the silence stretch until it became uncomfortable. Until Gage shifted his weight. Until Lorelai's smile tightened at the edges.

Then I looked away.

I picked up my champagne glass and studied the bracelet again. The diamonds caught the light. They'd been beautiful for a hundred years. They'd be beautiful for a hundred more. The people who wore them didn't matter.

"Stella." Gage's voice had an edge now. "Come on. Don't be like that."

I didn't answer.

Lorelai laughed. It was a pretty sound. Practiced. "You know, these events can be exhausting when you're not used to them. All the people, all the expectations." She paused. "All the... standards."

I set down my champagne glass. The clink of crystal on marble was very quiet.

Gage leaned closer. His cologne was the same. Expensive. Too much. "Look, I get it. You're hurt. But it's been a year. You need to move on before you embarrass yourself."

I looked at him one last time.

Not with anger. Not with pain. Just... looked.

He was handsome. He'd always been handsome. That hadn't changed. But standing there in his perfect tuxedo with his perfect smile, he looked smaller than I remembered. Like a photograph I'd carried too long and the colors had faded.

"Stella—"

I turned and walked away.

Behind me, Lorelai said something I didn't catch. Gage laughed, but it sounded wrong. Tight.

I made it five steps before the room shifted.

Conversations stopped mid-sentence. Heads turned toward the entrance. A waiter froze with a tray of champagne.

I knew before I looked.

Kingsley Hudson walked through the doors like he owned the building. Maybe he did. I'd stopped asking about things like that.

He was in black tie. His hair was silver at the temples. His face was the kind of face that made people straighten their spines and check their watches. He scanned the room once—quick, efficient—and his eyes found mine.

He crossed the floor.

People moved out of his way without thinking about it. The crowd just... parted.

He stopped in front of me. He didn't smile. He didn't need to.

"Ready?" he asked.

I nodded.

He took my hand. His palm was warm. Steady.

We walked toward the exit together. I didn't look back. But I felt it. The weight of every eye in the room. The sudden, shocked silence.

And somewhere behind me, Gage Hudson's smirk finally died.

The Rolls-Royce was waiting at the curb. Kingsley opened the door himself. I slid into the back seat. The leather was soft. The city lights blurred past the tinted windows.

Kingsley sat beside me. The door closed. The noise of the Plaza—the music, the voices, the performance—cut off like a switch.

I leaned into his shoulder. I let myself breathe.

"All right?" he asked quietly.

I nodded against his jacket. "Better than all right."

He studied my face. His eyes were dark. Serious. He didn't doubt me. He just wanted me to know he was paying attention.

My hand moved without thinking. My fingers touched my wrist. The empty space where my father's watch used to rest. An old reflex. A scar that didn't show.

Kingsley noticed.

He always noticed.

He didn't say anything. But his hand covered mine. Warm. Steady.

And I knew—whatever he'd seen, he'd remembered.
