My Ex-Mate Lost His Pack After Rejecting Me Chapter 1

The bond broke at 9:42 p.m., halfway through Connor's toast.

I stood at his left in my deep green gown, unmarked, the way I had stood for three years. Valerie drifted through the crowd in white. She touched his sleeve as she passed. Her vanilla perfume was all over his jacket. It was on his collar and on his throat. I had smelled it on him for weeks and told myself it meant nothing.

"Silence," Connor said.

He used the full Alpha tone. Three hundred wolves went still. He didn't look at me. He turned his shoulder to me, like I was a chair he was done sitting in.

"I, Connor Ford, Alpha of Ironvale, reject you, Vivienne Pierce, as my mate and Luna."

It hit like a blade between my ribs.

The mark on my neck went ice-cold. Then it went empty, like a door closing in a house where no one lives. My knees buckled. Something deep inside me howled, and it made no sound at all.

The hall didn't gasp. It murmured. Approving, almost relieved.

"About time."

"She never even woke her wolf."

I locked my knees and stayed upright. I would not fall in front of them.

"Step down, Vivienne," Connor said. The Alpha tone rolled over me, heavy as a hand on my shoulders. "Leave the stage."

My spine bent an inch. Only an inch.

"You said it in front of everyone," I said quietly. "Remember that."

His jaw twitched. He couldn't make me kneel, and everyone could see it. So he grabbed Valerie's wrist and pulled her up beside him. She was glowing in that white dress. She tilted her neck for him and smiled at me over his shoulder.

"Valerie Adams," he began.

He leaned in. His teeth were an inch from her skin.

Something in me snapped.

It wasn't the bond. That was already gone. This was older, hotter, and it burned through my veins like acid. I tasted bitter chemicals, the ones I had swallowed in every vitamin and tonic my adoptive mother ever handed me. They boiled out of me.

My bones cracked. They didn't just shift, they stretched, longer and longer, breaking and reforming. My gown tore away. The floor shook under paws that weren't paws, they were too big.

When the world came back into focus, I was looking down at Connor's head.

He was kneeling. They all were. Three hundred wolves, necks bared, faces pressed toward the floor. Even Connor. His wolf was whimpering so loud I could hear it. Valerie lay crumpled in her white dress like a dropped napkin.

I looked at the man who had murdered our bond. I let him see my eyes, cold and silver.

Then I turned my back on him and walked out through the doors. They splintered around my shoulders.

I made it to the edge of Ironvale's border before my legs gave out. I shifted back on gravel, naked and bleeding, my ribs aching like they had been broken twice. The night smelled of pine and wet asphalt.

Headlights swept over me. Black SUVs. Six of them, stopping in a tight line. Each one carried a crest I had only ever seen in textbooks.

A man stepped out of the lead car. He was tall, silver at the temples, with a heavy ring on his hand. Every instinct I had said *run*. But my body couldn't move.

He inhaled once, and froze.

"Winter jasmine," he whispered. "Ancient frost."

He didn't ask my name. He walked across the gravel and knelt in front of me, in a ditch, in the dirt, with a crowd of armed wolves watching.

"I have been looking for you since before you could walk," King Silas said.

My hands were covered in blood. I stared at them. He was crying, and I had no idea why.

---

They brought me to the Lycan stronghold before dawn. Someone put me in a wing of the palace with a bed bigger than my old cabin. I was dressed in borrowed silk and walked down a hallway toward my father's study.

A man stopped mid-sentence in front of me.

He was tall. Dark hair, dark coat, hands clasped behind his back. His whole body went rigid. I smelled cedar, rain, and something electric underneath, like a storm that hadn't broken yet.

I knew what that look meant. I had seen it once before, from the wrong man.

"Dominic Ashford," said the aide beside him, quietly. "The Prince."

Dominic said nothing. He didn't step closer. He didn't say the word I could see in his eyes. He just watched me with his chin level and his hands locked behind him, as if he was holding himself in place.

I kept my chin up, though the hollow in my chest ached with every step.

"I won't be claimed," I said, flat and calm. "Not by anyone. Not until I finish what I started."

He held my gaze a long moment. Then he nodded once.

"Understood."

That was all. It unsettled me more than a fight would have.

---

I didn't sleep. I sat at a desk in the royal wing with a pen and a sheet of heavy paper. I wrote in the same precise hand that had written Ironvale's charter.

*The wolfsbane ward network along the entire perimeter is permanently withdrawn, effective immediately.*

I didn't sign it. I didn't threaten. I didn't seal it with anything. Three years of my blood, my burned wrists, and my sleepless nights had built those wards. Connor had called it *his* border. He had bragged about it to every Alpha who would listen.

I folded the paper once and handed it to a courier.

"Eastern watchtower. Before sunrise."

He bowed and left. I traced the pale scars on my wrist, one by one, and watched the sky go gray.

Miles away, in a cold stone tower, a phone began to buzz.
