My Delta Mate Chose an Alpha’s Daughter Chapter 1

The bond broke at 10:14 on the night of the Ironveil Pack Banquet, but I felt it crack three minutes earlier.

I was standing near the back of the hall when my wolf stirred for the first time in my life. Not a full awakening—just a tremor, like something shifting beneath ice. Then the mind-link opened. I didn't know what it was at first. Just a voice that wasn't mine, sliding into my head without permission.

*"...Morgan's father confirmed the alliance terms this morning. I'll reject Lily publicly, announce the mating arrangement right after. Clean pivot. She won't make a scene—she never does."*

Tucker's voice. Tucker's thoughts.

I went very still.

The hall was full of firelight and formal dress, the entire pack gathered for the banquet. Tucker stood near the dais beside Morgan Boyd, her hand resting lightly on his arm. She wore silver—expensive, deliberate. Her father was a neighboring Alpha with money and military resources. I knew that much. I hadn't known Tucker had been meeting with him.

*"Three years with an Omega. Moon Goddess, what a waste. But it kept things stable while I waited for something better."*

My hands found the hem of my dress. I folded the fabric into a tight crease, then another, the way I always did when I needed to think and couldn't move. The mind-link kept going. I couldn't shut it off.

*"She'll cry, probably. Let her. The pack expects Deltas to be ambitious. They'll respect the move."*

My wolf growled—a low, furious sound that vibrated through my chest like a struck bell. I'd never heard her before. I didn't know I could.

Tucker adjusted his Delta insignia, the silver polished so bright it caught the firelight. He was rehearsing. I could hear him testing phrases, weighing words. *"Lily, you've been a comfort to me, but..."* No. Too soft. *"Our bond has run its course..."* Better. Clinical. Respectful enough to avoid backlash, cold enough to signal he'd moved on.

Morgan leaned in and said something I couldn't hear. Tucker smiled. The smile didn't reach his eyes, but it didn't need to. It was for the wolves watching.

I stood there folding my dress and listening to three years dismantle themselves in real time.

Then Tucker turned toward the dais.

I moved before I decided to. The crowd parted—confused, because Omegas didn't approach the dais uninvited. I walked through the gap they made, my hands still folded at my sides, my wolf humming low and steady beneath my ribs.

Tucker saw me and stopped mid-step. His expression flickered—surprise, then calculation. He thought I was going to beg. I could see it in his face.

I stopped three feet from him and spoke in a voice that didn't shake.

"I, Lily Brooks, Omega of the Ironveil Pack, reject you, Tucker Hoffman, Delta of the Ironveil Pack, as my mate."

The bond snapped.

It felt like a wire breaking under tension—sharp, immediate, and clean. The pain hit Tucker first. He staggered, doubling over, one hand clutching his chest. His polished insignia swung loose on its chain. The rejection pain was supposed to hurt both of us, but mine felt distant, like something happening to someone else. My wolf was too satisfied to let me feel much else.

The hall erupted. Murmurs, gasps, a few wolves stepping back like the rejection might be contagious. Morgan's face went blank—the rapid recalculation of someone whose entire plan just collapsed.

I turned and walked out. I didn't look back. My hands stayed folded at my sides, the only sign I was shaking.

Outside, the night air was cold and sharp. I sat down on a stone step, my formal dress pooling around my feet, and took stock.

The bond was gone. The space in my chest where it used to sit felt raw but clean, like a splinter removed. I had no pack standing now. No allies. No wolf that had fully awakened—just that one growl, that one flicker of her presence, and then silence again.

But I had the mind-link. It was still there, humming faintly at the edges of my consciousness. And I had the knowledge that Tucker's plan existed, which meant every assumption I'd made about the last three years was false.

I pulled a scrap of the banquet program from my pocket and folded it into a small, precise square. I didn't cry. I filed the information the way I always had: carefully, without wasting it.

Behind me, the hall doors opened. Voices spilled out—shocked, excited, speculating. Someone said my name. I didn't turn around.

I sat on that step until the voices faded and the firelight dimmed, my wolf quiet again beneath my ribs, and waited to see what came next.

Two days later, Ironveil's Beta delivered my reassignment papers.

Transfer to duties at the Silvercrest Pack's joint training compound. Administrative housekeeping for an Omega who had publicly severed her bond and disrupted a Pack Banquet. The paperwork was clean, bureaucratically airtight, and unusually specific about the compound assignment.

I read it twice. Then I tucked it into my jacket beside the folded banquet scrap and packed a single bag.

Tucker, I heard later, learned about the transfer from his quarters. He was still nursing his rejection wounds. When he found out I was going to Silvercrest—Raphael Montgomery's territory—he went very, very still.

I didn't know why that mattered yet.

But I was about to find out.
