My Billionaire Lover Traded Me to Secure a Merger Chapter 1

The first thing was the perfume. Not mine. Something sweet and cheap, clinging to the collar of Cassius's shirt like it wanted to be found. I didn't say anything. I just folded the shirt and put it in the hamper, the way I always did.

Then came the receipt. I found it in his coat pocket while I was doing what I always did — checking, folding, making myself useful. A diamond bracelet, eighteen thousand dollars, from a jeweler on Madison. I never got a bracelet. I never got anything with a paper trail.

Then the phone. It buzzed on the counter while he showered, and I saw the name light up the screen. Just initials. B.R. A message preview: *last night was so much fun lol.*

I didn't confront him. Six years teaches you that confrontation is a luxury you can't always afford. I waited until he left for work, and I looked up the jeweler's address, and I found the receipt again, and on the back, in smudged pen, someone had written a second address. A gaming café in the East Village.

I went there myself, on a Tuesday, wearing sunglasses like a woman in a bad movie. Through the window I saw him. Cassius Cunningham, in his three-thousand-dollar coat, sitting across from a girl with box-dyed red hair and a laugh too loud for the glass to hold in. She had her hand on his arm. He was smiling the way he used to smile at me, back when smiling at me still cost him something.

Her name, I would learn later, was Bridget Ray.

I went home. I sat at the kitchen island and waited for him, the receipt laid flat on the marble like evidence in a trial only I would attend.

He came in past midnight, loosening his tie, and he saw the paper before he saw my face.

"Who is Bridget Ray?" I asked. My voice didn't shake. I was almost proud of that.

He sighed. Not guilty. Irritated. Like I'd interrupted a show he was enjoying.

"Emilia. Don't do this."

"Do what? Ask a question?"

He poured himself a scotch, unbothered, and that was the moment I understood something had already ended, even if the ending hadn't been announced yet.

"You're not my wife," he said. "You're a mistress. There's a difference. I never promised you anything but this apartment and a monthly transfer." He took a sip. "And your father's debt is still sitting on my father's books, in case you forgot that part."

He said it so calmly. Like he was reading me a contract clause.

I didn't cry in front of him. I want that on record, even if only for myself. I picked up the receipt and folded it once, twice, until it was small enough to disappear into my fist, and I walked to the bedroom, and I lay down on the far edge of the bed, and I stared at the wall until the sun came up.

The days after that, I moved through the penthouse like something that had already died but hadn't been told yet. I ate breakfast alone. I watched him leave in the mornings smelling like her. I called my father once, just to hear his voice crack through the line, thin as paper.

"Emilia? Sweetheart?"

"Hi, Dad. Just checking in."

I didn't tell him anything. What was there to tell him that wouldn't kill him faster than his own weak heart?

Then came the gala.

I found out through Instagram, of all things — a socialite I barely knew, posting from The Plaza. Chandeliers. Champagne towers. And there, in the third photo, Cassius, in a tux I'd steamed myself a hundred times, with his hand at the small of Bridget Ray's back. She wore a gown the color of a bruise, and she was laughing at something, head tipped back, throat exposed, like she owned the room.

I wasn't invited. I had never been invited to anything with his name attached to it. Six years, and I still didn't exist on paper anywhere in his life.

I sat on the penthouse floor in my pajamas and watched the story updates roll in through the night. Cassius bidding two hundred thousand on a Patek Philippe. Bridget's hand on the gavel like it was hers to hold. A gossip column already had a name for her: *the Cunningham heir's exciting new flame.*

I didn't scream. I didn't throw the phone.

Something inside me just went quiet. Like a switch flipped in a room I didn't know I had.

I sat there until the sun came up again, and I did not move, and I did not cry, and somewhere in that stillness, I understood that whatever I had been for six years — devoted, useful, invisible — was finally, quietly, over.
