My Billionaire Fiancé Was the Boy I Feared Chapter 1

The rain had been hitting the floor-to-ceiling windows since midnight.

I sat on the edge of the bed in the master suite of the Vale penthouse and turned the diamond on my ring finger. It caught the gray light and threw it back at me, cold and perfect.

I had said yes to Adrian Vale.

Seven years ago, he was the brightest boy at Westbrook Prep. He was also the reason I used to throw up before first period.

So why was his ring on my hand?

The door opened. Adrian came in with a glass of warm milk, the way he did every morning. He wore a crisp white shirt, sleeves rolled to the elbow.

"You're up early," he said softly.

He bent to kiss my forehead.

My body moved before my mind did. I jerked back into the corner of the bed, and my elbow struck the glass. Milk splashed across his chest and soaked into the cotton.

Neither of us spoke.

I waited for the shout. For the hand. For anything.

Adrian set the empty glass on the nightstand. He walked into the bathroom, came back with a towel, and wiped the milk off the sheets first. Not his shirt. The sheets.

"Did you have the nightmare again last night?" he asked.

His voice was so gentle that my skin crawled.

I remembered the cafeteria. The whole school watching. A carton of milk tipped over my head, sliding down my neck and into my collar. The notes taped inside my locker. *Freak. Nobody wants you here.* My chemistry textbook torn into confetti and left on my desk.

"Stop it," I said.

He looked up. "Stop what?"

"The act. The milk, the towel, the soft voice. You're a hypocrite, Adrian. If you hate me so much, why don't you just throw me out?"

Something flickered in his dark eyes. It looked like pain. That made no sense.

He folded the towel in half. Then in half again.

"Today is the seventh anniversary of our first date," he said. "I booked a fitting. I thought we could look at wedding dresses."

I laughed. It came out sharp and ugly.

"Our first date. Right." I leaned forward. "Tell me the truth. Do you want to marry me? Or do you just want to finish the game you never got to finish?"

His hand closed around the car keys on the dresser. His knuckles went white.

For a long moment, he said nothing.

"If you don't want to go," he finally said, "you can stay home."

He left the room. The door clicked shut without a slam.

I sat there staring at the milk stain on the carpet.

Then I got up and pulled the prettiest dress I owned out of the closet. Emerald silk. Fitted. The kind of dress you wear to win a war.

If he wanted to play nice, fine.

I wanted to see exactly how far his lies went.

---

The bridal salon was in a restored historic mansion on the Upper East Side. Marble stairs. Crystal chandeliers. The designer, a silver-haired woman named Celeste Moreau, met us at the door with both hands out.

"Miss Mara! Mr. Vale has told me so much about you." She pulled me toward a rack of gowns. "Now, this one is French Chantilly lace. This one is duchess satin. And this, darling, is hand-embroidered. Three hundred hours of work."

She kept talking. Adrian kept quiet.

He stood a few feet behind me, hands in his pockets.

"Which one do you like?" he asked.

That was all. Not *this one would look good on you.* Not *my mother would want this.* Just that.

I grabbed the nearest gown without looking. Plain. Pure white. No lace, no beads.

"This one," I said. "It looks like a burial shroud. Very fitting, don't you think?"

Celeste's smile froze.

Adrian didn't blink.

"Then that's the one," he said. "Whatever you choose, I'll respect it."

I stared at him. He met my eyes without flinching.

His phone buzzed. He glanced at the screen and frowned.

"I need to take this. Two minutes."

He stepped into the hallway.

Two minutes was all I needed.

"Is there a restroom?" I asked Celeste.

"Down the hall, past the garden door—"

I was already moving.

The garden door opened onto a narrow backyard. Rain dripped from the ivy. A small iron gate led to the side street. I pushed through it and ran down the wet stone path, my heels slipping, my silk dress clinging to my legs.

I made it to the corner of Madison Avenue.

Then I stopped.

Cars roared past. Yellow cabs. A delivery truck. Horns. People with umbrellas brushing my shoulders.

My legs were shaking so hard I had to grab a lamppost.

*Cross the street, Mara. Just cross it.*

I couldn't make my feet move. My chest squeezed tight. The light turned green, then red, then green again.

"Mara."

I spun around.

Adrian stood about five steps away. His hair was wet. He was breathing hard, like he had run the whole block.

He didn't come closer. He didn't reach for me.

He took off his coat and laid it on the bench beside the bus stop.

"It's cold," he said. "You don't have to wear it. But it's there."

I glared at the coat. Then at him.

"Why are you doing this?" My voice cracked. "Why won't you just be who you are?"

"I am being who I am."

"No." I yanked up my left sleeve and held out my wrist. On the inside, there was a small, round, faded scar. "Do you remember this? Junior year. Behind the gym. You held my arm down and put out your cigarette on my skin."

The color drained out of his face.

I had expected a smirk. A shrug. Maybe *that was a long time ago.*

Instead, he reached into his pocket and pulled out a silver lighter. He looked at it for one second. Then he walked to the trash can on the corner and dropped it in.

It hit the bottom with a hollow clank.

"I remember every bit of pain you went through, Mara," he said quietly. "Every single one. But some things didn't happen the way you remember them."

My throat burned.

There it was. The excuse. The rewrite. Of course.

I turned my back on him and walked away. I didn't take the coat.

"If you ever want to know the truth," he called after me, "I'll tell you. Even if the truth means you'll never forgive me."

I didn't look back.

But my steps slowed. Just a little.

---

That night, Adrian was still at the office.

I went into his study. I told myself I was looking for proof. Bank records. Old messages. Anything that showed what kind of man he really was.

The bottom desk drawer stuck. I pulled harder, and it slid open.

Inside, under a stack of folders, lay a single photograph. The edges were yellowed and soft, like someone had held it too many times.

It was from our senior prom.

I was in it. A pale blue dress. My hair pinned up. I was laughing, head tipped back, so bright and happy that I almost didn't recognize myself.

Adrian stood beside me in a black tux. He wasn't looking at the camera.

He was looking down at me.

His eyes were so tender it hurt to look at them.

My fingers went numb. I turned the photo over.

On the back, in blue ink, in his neat handwriting:

*To my little pianist. Whenever you're ready to come back, I'll be right here.*

I sank to the floor, the picture shaking in my hand. A chill crept up from my spine to the back of my neck.

I didn't remember this night.

I didn't remember that dress.

I had never, in my whole life, played the piano.

Had I?
