My Alpha Used Me to Save His Chosen Luna Chapter 1

The full moon hung over Shadowcrest like a witness.

I stood before the assembled pack in my healer's robes, the white fabric catching the silver light. My mother's ceremonial moon-pendant rested against my throat — the one piece of her legacy I'd managed to save from the fire that took her and my father. Five years. I'd waited five years for this moment, tending the sick, perfecting formulas, serving this pack with everything I had. Serving him.

Alpha Alec stood at the center of the ceremonial circle, his dark cedar and thunderstorm scent washing over me even from ten feet away. My wolf stirred beneath my skin, weak but present, whispering the word she'd been whispering since I turned sixteen: Mate. Mate. Mate.

The pack pressed close on all sides — warriors, healers, omegas, all gathered to witness what the Moon Goddess herself had written into my blood. Beta Marcus stood to Alec's right, his expression carefully neutral. I caught his eye for just a second. He looked away.

Something cold moved through my chest.

Alec stepped forward. The crowd went silent. He didn't look at me — not directly. His gaze fixed somewhere over my left shoulder, his jaw tight.

"I, Alec Voss, Alpha of the Shadowcrest Pack," he said, his voice carrying across the clearing with that Alpha authority I'd heard him use a thousand times, "reject you, Olivia Peterson, as my mate."

The words hit like silver to the spine.

I felt my knees buckle before I understood what was happening. The bond — the fragile, unacknowledged thread I'd felt pulling me toward him for five years — tore. Not cleanly. It ripped, jagged and burning, through every nerve I had. My wolf howled inside me, a sound of pure agony that never made it past my lips. I couldn't breathe. I couldn't think. There was only pain, molten and absolute, radiating from the center of my chest outward.

I hit the ground hard, my palms scraping against stone.

Through the haze of pain, I heard him continue. "The mate bond was a mistake of scent, not of fate. I choose Helena Crane as my mate and future Luna of this pack."

Helena.

I forced my head up. She stood beside him now, her hand resting gently on his arm. She wore a soft blue dress that made her look fragile, ethereal. Her expression was one of practiced sympathy — brows drawn together, lips curved in a small, sad smile. She looked at me the way you'd look at a wounded animal you were sorry to see suffer but had no intention of helping.

The pack was silent. No one moved. No one came forward.

I pressed my hand to my chest, trying to breathe through the searing agony. My mother's pendant felt suddenly too heavy, the chain cutting into the back of my neck. I wanted to rip it off. I wanted to scream. I did neither. I just knelt there, shaking, while the man the Moon Goddess had chosen for me stood ten feet away and didn't even look at me.

Alec turned to Helena. He took her hand. The pack began to murmur, a low ripple of sound that felt like static in my ears. Someone clapped. Then another. Then the whole clearing filled with the sound of approval, of celebration, of a pack accepting their Alpha's choice.

I stayed on my knees until the crowd began to disperse. Until the ceremonial circle emptied. Until there was no one left but me and the full moon and the taste of blood in my mouth from biting my tongue to keep silent.

---

Hours later, I stood in Alec's study.

I hadn't meant to come here. I'd meant to go back to the Healing Hall, to my small room in the back where I kept my workbench and my books and the box of my parents' things I'd salvaged from the fire. But I needed medical records for tomorrow's protocols — a wolf with chronic joint inflammation, another with an infected wound that wasn't healing right. I needed the files Alec kept locked in his office because he didn't trust anyone, not even his Healer, with full access to pack medical history.

My hands were still shaking as I unlocked the cabinet.

The bond's agony had dulled to a constant, throbbing ache. My wolf was silent now, collapsed somewhere deep inside me where I couldn't reach her. I felt hollow. Functional, but hollow.

I found the files I needed. I was turning to leave when I saw the document on his desk.

It was half-hidden beneath a ledger, the corner of the page just visible. My name was written at the top in Alec's sharp, precise handwriting.

I shouldn't have looked. I knew that. But my hand moved before my brain could stop it.

I pulled the document free and read.

Date of mate scent recognition: October 12th. Olivia Peterson, age sixteen. Wolf acknowledgment: confirmed. Decision: suppress bond. Reasoning: bloodline synthesis value. Peterson bloodline carries rare Healer genetics — only viable source for Wolfbane Decay cure. Proximity essential. Marking contraindicated. Maintain productive distance.

The words blurred. I read them again. Then again.

He knew.

He knew the moment I turned sixteen. His wolf recognized me. And he chose — deliberately, coldly — to suppress it. To keep me close. Not because he loved me. Not because the Moon Goddess had chosen us. Because my blood could save Helena.

I was never his mate. I was a resource.

I folded the document carefully, my hands no longer shaking. I put it in my healer's coat pocket. I locked the cabinet. I walked out of his study, down the corridor, past the pack house common room where I could hear voices and laughter from the post-ceremony celebration.

I walked back to the Healing Hall without making a sound.

---

The next morning, I went to work.

My wolf was still silent. My chest still ached. But there were sick wolves who needed me, and I didn't know how to stop being the person who helped them. It was the only thing I had left that made sense.

Pack members passed me in the corridor. Yesterday, they'd nodded. Smiled. Asked how I was feeling. Today, they looked through me. I'd lost something overnight — not just the bond, but my place. I'd never been formally ranked. I'd been the Alpha's... what? His unacknowledged mate. His Healer. Now I was just the Healer. Maybe not even that.

I was labeling formula vials at my workbench when Helena walked in.

She wore a soft sweater and jeans, her hair pulled back in a loose braid. She looked warm. Approachable. She sat down across from me with a sympathetic expression I'd seen her practice in mirrors.

"Olivia," she said quietly. "I wanted to check on you."

I didn't look up. I kept labeling. Valerian root extract. Dosage: 10ml. Application: external.

"I know last night was hard," she continued. Her voice was gentle, almost tender. "I want you to know that Alec always cared for you. In his way. He just... he had to make the choice that was right for the pack. You understand that, don't you?"

I set down the vial. Picked up the next one. Arnica tincture. Dosage: 5ml. Application: internal.

"I'll make sure you're taken care of," Helena said. She reached across the table as if to touch my hand. I moved it before she could. "You're valuable to this pack, Olivia. Your gift is... irreplaceable."

I finally looked up.

Her eyes were warm. Sympathetic. Completely empty.

I held her gaze for three seconds. Then I went back to my vials.

She sat there for another moment, then stood. "I'm glad we talked," she said softly.

She left. I heard her footsteps in the corridor outside, heard her greet two pack members with that same warm, gentle voice.

The performance was over. It had been witnessed.

I pressed my thumb against the scar on my left palm — the burn from pulling my mother's pendant fragments from a fire years ago — and kept working.
