My Alpha Rejected Me Before the Lycan Prince Claimed Me Chapter 1

The bond broke at 10:14 on a Tuesday night, though I didn't know it yet.

I stood outside Luca's study with one hand pressed to my belly—seven months swollen, the pup kicking against my ribs like it was trying to tell me something—and caught the scent beneath the door. Amber's perfume. Not the floral kind she wore in public, but the deeper note underneath: her wolf, her skin, the particular musk that clung to her when she was aroused. It was layered over Luca's scent so thickly I could taste it at the back of my throat.

The door sat two inches ajar. I hadn't meant to stop here. I'd been walking to the kitchen to make tea—something to settle the nausea that had plagued me all week—but my feet slowed when I heard his voice. Low. Satisfied. The tone he used when a negotiation had gone exactly as planned.

"The Healer confirmed it three months ago," Luca said. "The implant took on the first try."

I stopped breathing.

"And she still doesn't know?" Amber's voice, breathy with something between excitement and disbelief.

"She thinks it's mine." A pause. "Ours, I mean. Through the bond."

Amber laughed—soft, delighted. "God, Luca. A wolfless Omega carrying my pup. It's almost poetic."

"It's efficient," he corrected. "You keep your shifting form intact. I get an heir with your bloodline. And Hazel—" He said my name like it was a line item on a budget. "—serves the function she was always meant for."

The mate bond pulsed once in my chest. Not with pain. With information. I felt his emotional state through it the way I'd felt every mood for three years: calm, controlled, pleased with himself. No guilt. No hesitation. The bond was still there, still functional, still feeding me the truth of him in a way his words never had.

I pressed my shoulders against the wall. My knees wanted to buckle. I locked them.

"When?" Amber asked.

"After the birth. I'll reject her in front of the pack, install you as Luna, and present the pup as the natural heir. Clean succession. No one questions bloodline when the child's already here."

"And if she fights it?"

"She won't." His voice flattened with certainty. "She's wolfless. She has no standing, no family, no leverage. Where's she going to go?"

The bond pulsed again. Still calm. Still satisfied.

I stepped backward. My heel found the edge of the top stair in the dark.

I fell.

Twelve stone steps. I counted them on the way down—one, two, three—my hands grasping at nothing, my body twisting to protect the belly that wasn't protecting me. I hit the landing hard, my skull cracking against the floor, and lay still.

The pain came in waves. My abdomen first—a tearing sensation, deep and wrong. Then my back. My head. I pressed one hand to my belly and waited for the kick that always came when I touched it.

Nothing.

I waited.

Nothing.

Something else moved instead. Not in my belly. In my chest. Behind my ribs. A presence I had never felt before—massive, ancient, furious—pressing outward against my bones like it was trying to crack me open from the inside. My wolf. The one I'd been told I would never have. It surged toward the surface, and for one wild second I felt its rage as clearly as I'd felt Luca's satisfaction through the bond: *Let me out. Let me tear him apart.*

I forced it down. My jaw locked. My breath went controlled, deliberate, each inhale a battle I refused to lose. Not yet. Not here. Not where they could see.

Footsteps on the stairs above me. Luca's voice, sharp with irritation: "Hazel?"

I closed my eyes and let my body go limp. Easier than speaking. Safer than moving.

His hand on my shoulder, shaking once. "Hazel. Get up."

I didn't.

He swore under his breath and yelled for the Healer.

Three days in the infirmary. The Healer catalogued it as an accidental miscarriage—no foul play, she wrote in the report I saw later, just an Omega who wasn't careful on the stairs. Luca visited once, stood at the foot of the bed for thirty seconds, and left without touching me. Amber sent flowers.

I didn't cry. Couldn't. Every time I tried, the wolf pressed against my ribs again, and grief turned into something sharper.

On the second day, I started planting the markers.

Small objects. A hairpin I pressed beneath the study windowsill when the Healer left me alone to fetch bandages. A smooth stone I tucked behind the banquet hall baseboard when I was cleared to walk. A folded cloth I wedged inside the kitchen hearth while Ruth watched from the doorway, arms crossed, saying nothing because an Omega tidying was just an Omega doing what Omegas do.

Each one was calibrated. My wolfless nose—sharper than any shifted wolf's, trained by twenty years of compensation—could distinguish compound layers in scent that others experienced as a single note. I'd discovered it by accident years ago, mixing herbs for Ruth's headaches, realizing I could smell the exact moment lavender turned from soothing to bitter.

The markers absorbed everything. Bond-imprinted memories of whatever happened in their vicinity. Voices. Emotions. The particular frequency of a lie.

Evidence, I thought, sliding the hairpin into place. All of it. Evidence.

The morning they discharged me, Ruth stood in the banquet hall doorway and said, "The floor needs scrubbing before tonight's meal."

It was one week after the miscarriage. My body still ached. My abdomen still cramped.

I collected the bucket and the brush without a word, lowered myself to my knees on the cold stone, and began.

My hands cracked and bled before the first hour was done. I didn't stop. I worked methodically, section by section, until I reached the long table's center. Then I slid the final marker—a small ceramic disc, smooth and white—beneath the table leg and pressed it flat against the stone with my bleeding palm.

The marker absorbed everything. Ruth's voice from the doorway. The Omega servants' whispered contempt as they passed. The sound of my own breath going steady when it wanted to break.

Amber visited that afternoon. She knelt beside me, her hand warm on my arm, her voice soft with practiced grief. "I heard about the pup. I'm so sorry, Hazel. I know how much you wanted this."

I looked at her face. The face I'd known since childhood. The face I'd trusted with every secret I had.

It was never friendship, I realized. It was proximity management.

"Thank you, Amber," I said quietly.

She left satisfied.

I returned to my scrubbing. My wolf pressed once against my ribs—a slow, deliberate pulse, like a knock on a door I'd kept locked my entire life.

*Soon,* I thought.

And kept working.
