My Alpha Poisoned Me to Protect His Mistress Chapter 1

The bond broke at 10:14 on a Tuesday night, under a moon so full the entire pack could watch.

I stood on the Solstice Ceremony platform in my ceremonial gown—silver thread woven through white silk, the Luna's mark embroidered at the collar—and felt the mark on my neck begin to burn. Not the warm pulse of the mate bond. Something sharper. Damien stood three feet away, his hand resting on Allie's lower back, and the scent rolling off him was wrong. Vanilla and something floral I didn't recognize, layered so thick over his usual cedar that my wolf stirred for the first time in weeks, a low warning growl vibrating through my chest.

Hundreds of wolves filled the ceremonial grounds below. Visiting Alphas from allied packs. Shadowridge's warriors in formal dress. The Deltas who had escorted me from the strategy hall three days ago stood near the front, their eyes carefully neutral.

Damien turned to face me. His expression was calm. Rehearsed.

"Cora," he said, and his voice carried across the silent crowd with Alpha authority. "I have tried to make this work. But you have made it impossible."

My hand moved instinctively to my stomach. Six weeks. I hadn't told him yet. I had been waiting for the right moment, some sign that the man I mated three years ago was still in there.

Allie stepped forward, her eyes wide and glistening. She wore a pale blue gown that looked borrowed. It was.

"Your jealousy endangers this pack," Damien continued. "Allie has given us formulas that could save lives. She has offered her knowledge freely, without asking for credit or recognition. And you—"

He paused. Let the silence stretch.

"You have fought me at every turn."

I opened my mouth. No sound came. My wolf was clawing now, frantic, sensing something I hadn't yet named.

Damien's jaw tightened. He straightened his shoulders and spoke the words I had only ever heard in whispered pack history, the formal rejection vow that severed a mate bond before witnesses.

"I, Damien, Alpha of Shadowridge, reject you, Cora, as my mate and Luna."

The mark split open.

Not metaphorically. The skin at the junction of my neck and shoulder tore, a clean line of fire that felt like something vital being ripped out through the wound. I gasped—a sharp, airless sound—and my knees buckled. The bond didn't fade. It detonated. I felt it snap in my chest, a searing whip-crack that left an absence so sudden and so complete that for three full seconds I couldn't remember how to breathe.

I hit the stone platform hard. My palms scraped against the cold surface. Blood—warm and fast—soaked through the collar of my gown.

No one moved.

I looked up. Damien was already turning away, his hand still on Allie's back, guiding her toward the ceremonial dais where the Solstice chalice waited. Allie glanced back once. Her eyes were wide, her mouth a perfect O of shock. But her hand—resting lightly on Damien's forearm—didn't tremble.

The crowd below shifted. Whispers rippled outward. I heard my name. I heard "unstable." I heard "finally."

I tried to stand. My legs wouldn't hold. Something was wrong—not just the bond, something deeper, something low in my abdomen that felt like tearing. I pressed one hand to my stomach and felt wetness spreading, warm and wrong.

No.

I dragged myself to my feet. The world tilted. The drums started—the ceremonial rhythm that marked the Alpha's renewal vow—and the sound pounded through my skull like a second heartbeat. I stumbled toward the platform's edge. A Delta stepped forward, his hand outstretched, but he didn't reach for me. He was blocking my path to Damien.

I looked past him. Damien stood at the chalice, Allie beside him, raising the ceremonial cup to his lips. He drank. The pack howled approval. He didn't look back.

I turned and walked.

Not toward the pack house. Toward the only place no one would follow.

The basement entrance was hidden behind the north wing, a narrow stone staircase that led down to the old storage vaults. I made it three steps before my legs gave out entirely. I caught myself on the wall, my palm leaving a smear of blood on the stone, and forced myself down one step at a time.

The drums were still pounding overhead. Celebration. Renewal. The Alpha's strength confirmed before the Moon Goddess.

I reached the bottom and collapsed.

The stone floor was cold. I curled onto my side, my hand pressed to my stomach, and felt the warmth spreading beneath my gown. Not the bond wound. Lower. Deeper.

My wolf went silent.

Not the forced quiet of submission. The absolute, suffocating silence of something broken.

I lay there as the blood pooled beneath me, as the drums pounded overhead, as the pack celebrated the Alpha who had just severed a bond he never understood.

Six weeks.

I closed my eyes and counted my breaths. One. Two. Three.

Upstairs, someone howled. The sound was joyful.

I stopped counting.
