My Alpha Planned to Trade Me to Another Pack Chapter 1

I smelled him on her skin before I saw the shirt.

Cedar and iron. Drake's scent, thick and unmistakable, clinging to my cousin like a second skin as she descended the main staircase at dawn. The borrowed shirt—his shirt, the gray one he wore two nights ago—hung loose on her frame, the collar gaping open at her throat. Her hair was unbound. Her feet were bare.

I stood in the foyer with my healer's kit still in hand, dirt from the border skirmish I'd just treated still under my nails, and I catalogued every detail with the clinical precision my wolf had never given me reason to abandon. Ryleigh's pupils were dilated. Her lips were swollen. The scent wasn't just on her clothes—it was in her hair, on her neck, layered so thick my trained nose could distinguish compounds: his sweat, his skin, the musk that came from hours in his bed.

My wolf gave one faint shudder deep in my chest. The first sound it had made in three years. Then it went still again.

Ryleigh saw me and smiled. Not startled. Not guilty. Just slow and satisfied, like she'd been waiting for this moment.

"Harper," she said, her voice still rough from sleep. "You're back early."

I set my kit down carefully on the entry table. My thumb found the mate mark on my neck without my permission, pressing against the raised scar tissue where Drake had bitten me three years ago. The bond hummed faintly beneath my skin—dull, distant, but still there. Still tethering me to a man whose scent was currently saturating the she-wolf standing ten feet away.

"Border patrol needed a healer," I said. My voice came out even. Controlled. "Rogue skirmish. Three wounded."

Ryleigh descended the last two steps, and the shirt shifted, revealing a shadow on her collarbone that looked suspiciously like a bruise shaped like teeth. Not a mate mark—Drake wouldn't be that stupid—but close enough to make the message clear.

"Drake's still sleeping," she offered, tilting her head. "He was up late. Pack business."

Pack business. The words landed with the weight of a stone dropped into still water. I watched the ripples spread, catalogued the lie, filed it away.

"Of course," I said.

I picked up my kit and walked past her, close enough that her scent—jasmine and something sharper, something that didn't belong—mixed with his in my nose until I wanted to gag. I didn't. I climbed the stairs with the same measured pace I used in council meetings, in treaty negotiations, in every moment of the last three years when I'd learned that showing weakness in this pack house was the fastest way to have it weaponized.

Behind me, Ryleigh laughed softly. The sound followed me all the way to my room.

---

That night, Drake left for a border patrol. He kissed my forehead on his way out—a gesture so perfunctory it barely registered as contact—and told me he'd be back by dawn. I waited until his truck disappeared down the drive. Then I waited another hour.

His study door was locked, but I had a key. He'd given it to me two years ago when he needed me to retrieve alliance documents during a council emergency. He'd never asked for it back.

The room smelled like him. Cedar and iron and old leather. I moved through it with the same precision I used in the healing tent—every object noted, every surface memorized, so I could leave it exactly as I found it. His desk was organized chaos: territorial maps, tribute ledgers, a half-empty glass of whiskey. I opened the top drawer. Pens. Stamps. His Alpha seal, heavy and official.

The second drawer stuck. I pulled harder, and the false bottom shifted.

The phone was small, cheap, the kind you bought with cash and didn't register. I turned it on. No password. Eleven voice messages, all from the same unsaved number.

I pressed play.

Ryleigh's voice filled the study. Breathy. Deliberate. "Alpha," she purred, and the word made my stomach turn. "I can still feel you. God, I can still feel everywhere you touched me."

I stood perfectly still. My thumb found the mate mark again, pressing hard enough to hurt.

The second message: "I know you're her mate. I don't care. She's not really your Luna, is she? Not without a wolf."

The third: explicit, detailed, describing exactly what she would do when I was gone. When. Not if.

I listened to all eleven messages without moving. My hand didn't shake. My breathing didn't change. I simply stood there in my mate's study, in the room where he signed pack decrees and brokered alliances built on my father's name, and I let my cousin's voice wash over me like cold water.

When the last message ended, I pulled out my own phone. Photographed every message. Every timestamp. Every word.

Then I locked Drake's phone back in the drawer, aligned it at the precise angle I'd found it, and left the study exactly as I'd entered it.

Upstairs, I sat on the edge of my bed and stared at the photographs on my phone screen. The mate mark on my neck felt cold. Hollow. Like a door closing on an empty room.

My wolf stirred again. Not rage. Not grief. Something quieter. Something that felt almost like purpose.

I didn't sleep that night. I didn't cry. I sat in the dark and I planned.
