My Alpha Betrayed Me for His Fated Mistress Chapter 1

The bond broke at 10:14 on a Tuesday morning.

I didn't know it yet. I was sitting at my desk in the pack house, reviewing alliance documents under the yellow glow of a desk lamp. My coffee had gone cold an hour ago. The treaty clause I'd been revising blurred in front of my eyes, but I kept working because that's what I did. I built. I fixed. I held Ironveil together while Elias wore the crown.

The hallway creaked. I looked up.

Elias walked past my open door, still in his patrol jacket. He didn't stop. Didn't say goodnight. Just kept moving toward his study with his shoulders tight and his jaw set. I watched him go, my pen hovering over the page.

Then I smelled it.

Wild jasmine. Sweet and cloying, threaded through the familiar cedar of his scent like a vine choking a tree. It hit me so hard I dropped my pen. My wolf stirred inside my chest, a low growl rumbling up from somewhere deep and primal. She'd been quiet for weeks, subdued by the endless delays and Elias's empty promises. Now she was awake. And she was furious.

I stood. My hands were shaking. I pressed them flat against the desk until they stopped.

The scent wasn't faint. It wasn't accidental. It was layered into his collar, his hair, his skin. Someone had been close enough to leave that mark. Someone who wasn't me.

I waited. The pack house settled into silence. Elias's study light clicked off. His footsteps faded up the stairs. I counted to three hundred, then stepped into the hallway.

The scent trail was easy to follow. It led out the back door, across the east lawn, into the tree line where the pack border thinned. I walked in the dark with my wolf pacing circles inside me, her rage bleeding into my bloodstream until my vision sharpened and my hearing picked up every snap of a twig, every rustle of leaves.

The safe house appeared through the trees like a secret. Small. Tucked into a clearing I'd never seen on any pack map. A single light burned in the window.

I stopped ten feet from the door.

Elias's voice drifted through the wood, low and soft. I'd never heard him use that tone with me. It was reverent. Tender. The kind of voice you use when you're holding something precious.

"You're still mine," he murmured. "You know that. This proximity—it's necessary. Just until after the ceremony. Then everything will be resolved."

A woman's laugh. Light and musical. "You keep saying that."

"I mean it, Lorelei."

Lorelei.

The name landed in my chest like a stone. I stood there in the cold, cataloging every word. Every breath. Every lie he'd fed me for five years while she waited in the dark.

My wolf snarled. *He chose her. He kept her. He lied.*

I turned. Walked back through the trees. Got into my car and drove to the pack house with my hands locked on the wheel. I sat at my desk until dawn, staring at the treaty documents I'd spent five years drafting. My wolf was silent now. Not grieving. Planning.

I didn't sleep. I didn't cry. I opened my laptop and started making calls.

By the time the sun rose, I had a diplomatic advisory position waiting for me in Silverpine territory. I had a contact who could move my things quietly. And I had a plan.

Three days before the ceremony, I went to the pack tailor for my final fitting. The dress was white, elaborate, covered in lace and tulle. I stood in front of the mirror while the seamstress pinned the hem, and I felt nothing.

The door chimed. I looked up.

Lorelei Cruz walked in.

She was beautiful in the way that fated mates always are—wild dark hair, sharp green eyes, a smile that didn't reach past her teeth. The wild jasmine scent rolled off her in waves. She looked at me in the mirror and tilted her head.

"Beautiful ceremony Elias has planned," she said lightly. "I'm sure it will be perfect."

I met her eyes in the glass. "I'm sure."

"Some bonds are written by the Moon Goddess," she continued, running her fingers along a bolt of silk. "Others are just... built from convenience."

She turned, letting her neck tilt just enough. The faint ghost of Elias's cedar scent was already threading into her skin. A claiming that hadn't been marked yet but was already underway.

I stepped down from the platform. The seamstress backed away.

"Without the Luna ward I personally anchor," I said quietly, "Ironveil's borders would collapse. And with them, every supply route running through the territory. Including ones the Cruz family might prefer to keep invisible."

Lorelei's smile froze. Just for a second. Then she recovered, laughed, and told me to enjoy the ceremony.

I watched her leave. I knew exactly what was going to happen at the altar.

The night of the ceremony, I dressed in silence. The white gown felt like a costume. I walked through the pack house, past the warriors lining the halls, past Mrs. Howell in her ceremonial dress with her mouth pressed into a thin, expectant line. I stepped outside under the full moon.

The entire Ironveil Pack was assembled. Allied pack representatives. Elders. Elias stood at the altar stone, his Alpha aura radiating full authority.

I walked toward him.

Then the crowd parted.

Lorelei Cruz stepped through in a white ceremonial gown. On her neck, glowing fresh and unmistakable, was Elias's mate mark.

Given the night before.

The crowd gasped. Elias's face drained of color. He opened his mouth.

I stepped to the altar stone.

"I, Julianna Stevens," I said, my voice steady as iron, "reject you, Elias Howell, Alpha of Ironveil Pack, as my mate."

The bond snapped.

Elias staggered. His Alpha aura cracked audibly, a fracture every wolf in attendance felt in their bones. The Luna ward—five years of my power woven into Ironveil's borders—collapsed. The protective barrier vanished like heat from a dead fire.

Mrs. Howell's hand flew to her chest. Lorelei's smile froze.

I turned my back on all of them. Walked through the stunned crowd. Got into my car.

And severed my mind-link to Ironveil forever as I drove west into the dark.
