Moonbound Betrayal Chapter 1

The full moon loomed, casting cold silver light over the forest, stretching shadows across the ground. Every sound—each crackling leaf, every whisper of movement—felt magnified in this silence, until—

“Traitor.” A voice hissed behind me, raw and seething.

I spun around, but it was too late. Three figures emerged from the darkness, closing in. My heartbeat thundered in my chest as I braced myself, fingers tightening around the dagger in my hand.

“Where is your honor, Elara?” mocked the tallest one, eyes glinting under the moonlight as he raised his blade. “Abandoned it like you abandoned him?”

I swallowed hard, ignoring the jabs, steadying myself. “Honor? You have none.”

“Oh, brave words for a woman so close to death,” he sneered, his weapon glinting as he advanced.

But I didn’t back down. One attack, then another, until all I could feel was the fire in my muscles, the ache in my bones. They tore into me—my side, my shoulder, my ribs—a symphony of pain that nearly blinded me. Blood soaked my clothes, damp and warm.

And when I stumbled, fell to my knees, I heard the familiar laughter.

“Does it hurt, Elara?” His voice was mocking, venomous. “The betrayal? It’s only fitting.”

Yes, I thought, it does hurt. But not as much as the betrayal I’d endured. The memory cut deeper than any blade. My hand trembled as I tried to push myself up, failing once, twice, before finally finding the strength to stand.

My eyes were drawn to a flicker of movement, someone stepping out from the shadowed trees—a figure I recognized immediately, one who made my heart twist with a strange, unwanted familiarity.

“Enough.” His voice, cold and commanding, silenced the men. Leonidas.

The others stepped back, faces dark with resentment, and I saw their frustration—their reluctance. They wanted my blood, but Leonidas’ command was unbreakable.

He stepped forward, his gaze steady, unreadable, as he took in my battered state.

“So this is what it’s come to,” I spat, my voice hoarse, my breaths coming in shallow, painful gasps.

“Look at you, Elara,” he said, his tone measured but tinged with something I couldn’t place. “Defeated. Hurt.”

“If you came here to taunt me, don’t waste your time. Just let me be,” I bit out, every word laced with defiance.

But Leonidas’ expression didn’t waver. Instead, he took another step forward, his gaze shifting as if weighing his next words carefully.

“This isn’t pity, Elara. It’s necessity,” he said. “Our clans are on the verge of war. And the only solution—”

“Spare me your politics,” I interrupted, pushing myself up again, swallowing against the sharp sting of my injuries. “You think a lecture will make this right?”

“No,” he answered, his voice unwavering. “But perhaps this will.”

I froze, the chill in his words sinking into my bones as he continued, a grim determination in his eyes.

“For the sake of peace, Elara, I am here to propose an alliance.”

I scoffed, a bitter laugh escaping me. “An alliance? After everything you’ve done—everything you’ve stolen from me?”

“It’s the only way to avoid complete ruin,” he said, his tone carrying a brutal honesty. “And for that, we will marry.”

The words landed like a blow, robbing me of breath. I looked up at him, blood trickling down my face, but it was nothing compared to the ache his words left within me.

“You must be joking.”

“I’m not.” His voice was steady, unwavering.

I staggered back, staring into the cold eyes of the man who had orchestrated my misery, the one responsible for the shattering of everything I once knew.

“Marriage won’t solve this,” I whispered, searching his gaze for any trace of the man he used to be.

“This is the only way forward,” he replied, emotionless, each word hitting me like a stone. “You can fight it all you want, Elara. But without this union, our clans will be at each other’s throats.”

I swallowed, throat tight, words of anger building up, burning to be unleashed. But his expression held no sympathy, no remorse. He was as cold and ruthless as the night itself, a stranger in the form of a familiar face.

“And you think I’d agree?”

“You have no choice,” he replied. “Unless you’d rather see your people destroyed.”

I clenched my jaw, the gravity of his words settling in. Trapped. Betrayed by my own heart, my pride, and now by this twisted, vile alliance.

“Fine,” I finally whispered, each word dripping with venom. “But don’t think for a second that this changes anything. I hate you, Leonidas. I will always hate you.”

His expression didn’t change, but something flickered in his gaze—something almost vulnerable, quickly buried beneath his mask.

“Hate me all you want, Elara. It won’t change the terms.”

And with that, he turned and disappeared into the shadows, leaving me alone in the cold, bloodied and hollow, the words “We will marry” echoing in the silence, binding me to a future I wanted no part of.
