Mafia Don’s Ghost Wife Chapter 1

Betty’s POV

“Happy birthday, Lexi!”

The room was filled with cheers and laughter, a sea of raised glasses and sparkling lights creating a false warmth in the grand hall.

I watched from the shadows as Lexi stood in the center, enjoying the attention. Her smile was wide and perfect as she accepted the admiration of the crowd.

And Lucas—he was right there by her side. His expression was hard to read, a mix of pride and distance as he watched her soak up the attention. My heart twisted, not from jealousy—not anymore—but from a deep, hollow ache of betrayal.

Lucas, the Mafia Don, who had once chased me, who had promised me forever.

Now he stood here, letting this woman cling to him as if she had any right.

He’d forgotten about me, abandoned me, and now he was with another woman.

Lexi’s gaze lifted to his face, her eyes gleaming with that mischievous look that had always unsettled me. She knew how to play him, to keep him wrapped around her finger with her soft, practiced voice.

“So, Lucas,” she purred, light and expectant, “what did you get me?”

Lucas gave her a small, knowing smile, one that made something inside me go still. He lifted his hand, signaling to one of his men standing nearby, who held a beautifully wrapped designer bag. It was the same bag that had once sat on our sofa—the one I’d foolishly thought was meant for me.

He nodded, and his man stepped forward, handing Lexi the bag like it was a precious gift. Lexi’s face lit up, her eyes widening as she reached out to take it, barely able to contain her excitement. She nearly leapt forward, her hands shaking slightly as she gripped the bag.

I stood quietly as Lexi began to unwrap it, her fingers gliding over the fancy paper, taking her time, savoring every second while everyone watched. She wanted to make sure they all saw her, that they knew this was her moment.

Then, her fingers touched something cold, something wet. Her smile froze, her face shifting into confusion. Her hand drew back slowly, and there it was—a severed hand, pale and lifeless, with a wedding ring still on its finger, the same ring Lucas had once slipped onto my hand with promises of forever.

“AHHHHHHHHH!” Her scream echoed through the room.

Lexi’s face went pale as the hand slipped from her grip, hitting the floor with a sickening thud.

“Oh my god, is that a hand?!”

“What the hell?!”

People gasped, some covered their mouths, and others looked away in horror.

“What’s going on here?” Lucas ordered his men to look at the gift.

“Don… it’s a hand,” one of his men muttered.

Lucas’s eyes dropped to the hand on the floor, his face paling as he stared down at it. For a moment, he seemed unable to understand what he was seeing. But then his eyes landed on the ring, and his face darkened as he murmured one trembling word.

“Th-this ring…”

It was a whisper, a hollow sound that echoed through me. He looked as though he’d seen a ghost—and he had. I was right there, watching him, feeling a strange satisfaction as he stared down at the proof of his broken promises.

Lexi finally snapped out of her shock, her eyes darting from Lucas to the hand on the floor.

“Lucas, oh my, c-could it be?” she whispered, her voice shaking with fear and desperation as she reached out, her fingers trembling as she touched his arm, pleading for comfort.

“Lucas, someone… someone must be trying to send a message,” she stammered, her voice shaking as she glanced around at the horrified faces.

“How… how did this happen?”

“Stop.” His voice was low, cutting through the noise, silencing her. His gaze stayed on the ring, his face unreadable as he stared at it.

For a moment, I thought I saw a hint of regret in his eyes, but it quickly vanished, buried beneath his anger and confusion. He clenched his fist, his jaw tightening as he tried to make sense of what was happening.

“I need to know who did this…” he muttered, his voice barely above a whisper. Around us, the guests murmured in shock, their whispers filling the silence like a storm.

“Who on earth would do such a thing?”

“I can’t look at this anymore. It’s sickening.”

This party was supposed to be grand, yet it turned out to be disturbing and horrifying.

Lexi’s fingers tightened on his arm. “Lucas, please,” she whispered, her voice trembling. “Whoever did this… they should pay for what they did!”

“Motherfucker…” Lucas’s voice was harder now, his eyes narrowing as if he couldn’t believe this was happening. It was as if he already had an idea, but was in denial about it.

A heavy silence filled the room, pressing down on everyone. Lucas clenched his jaw, clearly struggling to put the pieces together.

Finally, he turned to her, his voice cold and dismissive. “I’ll handle this on my own.”

He pulled his arm away, turning to Tyler, his right-hand man, his voice sharp. “Find out where that hand came from. I want answers. Now! OR I WILL KILL YOU ALL!”

Tyler nodded, and the room shifted as his men began clearing the guests, muttering into their radios, putting everything into motion. I drifted closer, my eyes on Lucas, watching his face twist with guilt.

He moved toward the exit, leaving Lexi standing alone in the middle of the room, her face frozen.

As the crowd began to thin, Lucas stormed off, glancing around, his eyes sharp and calculating. I caught the faint whisper as he muttered to himself, “Whoever did this… they’ll pay for what they did to you, Betty.”

But it’s too late now.

Because I’m already dead.
