LOVE BEYOND THORNS: THE BILLIONAIRE INVESTOR Chapter 1

The rain had stopped only minutes before, leaving the white marble headstones glistening with droplets that clung like tears too stubborn to fall.

Isabella Hart stood before one of them, her fingers tightening around a bouquet of pink roses until the stems left marks in her palm.

She knew the inscription by heart. She’d traced it with her eyes a hundred times.

SOPHIA HART

BELOVED MOTHER

FOREVER IN OUR HEARTS

Four years. Four years since cancer had taken the only person who had ever loved her without condition. Four years since the floor of her world had simply opened up and swallowed everything she knew.

A smile touched her lips thin, bitter, the kind that costs more than it gives.

“Happy birthday, Mom.”

The words came out barely above a whisper, swallowed almost instantly by the wind. Today her mother would have turned forty-seven. Isabella tried to picture it gray threading through dark hair, laugh lines deepening around eyes that had always looked at her like she was something worth keeping.

Her mother had been her strength, her hope, her entire compass. And then the cold had taken her, and left Isabella to find her own way through a world that had never once been gentle with her.

She knelt and laid the roses against the stone, careful, like she was tucking someone in for the night.

Then she began to talk, because some part of her still believed, against all reason, that the dead were listening.

“I’m trying.” Her voice trembled. “I’m really trying.”

The wind answered. Nothing else did.

Of course not. The dead never answered. But Isabella kept talking anyway, because there was no one left who would.

“School is fine.” A lie.

“The company is still secure.” Another.

“And Victoria isn’t making life difficult.” The biggest lie of all.

A tear slipped free despite every effort to hold it back. Her stepmother had made sure of that this morning, a cruelty so practiced it barely needed words anymore, just a look, a tone, the particular silence she left behind in a room. Ever since her father had brought that woman and her daughter into their home, Isabella had learned to make herself small. To disappear into corners. To breathe carefully, like the air itself might be rationed.

“I’m tired, Mom.” Her voice cracked open on the words. “So tired.”

Every day was a battle fought on three fronts. At Rosewood International School, she was the scholarship girl tolerated, never welcomed, watched by classmates who wore their family names like armor she’d never own. At home, she was a guest no one had invited and no one wanted to keep. At her part-time job, she smiled through exhaustion because every shift meant one more month she could afford to stay enrolled.

And still, somehow, she kept going. Because giving up had never been a real option, not when her mother had sacrificed everything to give her a future, not when her father had loose in life in a car accident trying to protect what was left of their family. She was what remained of them both. Quitting would mean losing them twice.

“I miss you, Mom. I really do.”

The confession slipped out before she could catch it, and the silence afterward felt enormous, almost cruel. For one suspended second she let herself imagine her mother’s arms around her, the particular warmth of that embrace, the safety she hadn’t felt in years. Then the cemetery rushed back in around her cold, gray, achingly, empty and the moment was gone.

Her phone buzzed against her hip.

Work Reminder….Evening Shift Starts at 6 PM.

She let out a breath that was almost a laugh. Of course. Grief didn’t pause the world, and the world had never once paused for her.

“I’ll come back soon,” she promised the headstone, and forced herself to stand.

She was almost at the cemetery gate when something made her slow down.

A black luxury car sat idling beneath a row of cherry blossom trees sleek, low, absurdly out of place among the modest gravestones and gravel paths. The kind of car that belonged on a magazine cover, not here.

She was still staring when the rear door opened.

A man stepped out. Tall, broad-shouldered, his black suit cut with the kind of precision that wasn’t bought off any rack. He moved like the air rearranged itself around him not loud, not showy, just absolute in a way she had no name for.

For one heartbeat, Isabella forgot to breathe. Not because he was handsome, though he was, in a way that felt almost like a warning. It was something else. Something that made the back of her neck prickle, like she was standing too close to a current she couldn’t see.

He stopped walking. Their eyes met one second, maybe two and something passed between them that neither could have named. Recognition, maybe. Or the start of it.

Then he looked away, and the moment broke like glass.

Isabella never saw the way his jaw tightened. Never heard the words that left him in a voice low enough to vanish into the wind.

“Isabella Hart.”

An hour later she sat on a crowded bus rattling back toward the city, the cemetery already fading behind the ordinary noise of her life, school, work, bills, survival. Her phone rang. ROSEWOOD INTERNATIONAL SCHOOL lit up the screen, and her stomach dropped before she even answered.

“Hello?”

“Miss Hart.” The principal’s voice, careful, almost giddy. “I hope I haven’t caught you at a bad time.”

“No, sir.”

“Good. I’m calling about tomorrow’s emergency assembly. Attendance is mandatory for every student.”

“Why?” Isabella frowned. “What’s happened?”

A pause, weighted with something she couldn’t read. “Rosewood has a new majority investor, Miss Hart. Tomorrow, you’ll be meeting the man who now owns this school.”

The line went dead. Isabella sat frozen in her seat, the city blurring past the window, a cold certainty settling low in her chest that her life was about to change and not by accident.

Across town, in an office of glass and steel, Adrian Kingsley stared down at a photograph he had searched four years to find. His fingers stilled against the page. No one in the room dared speak.

Finally, he said the only thing that mattered.

“She’s alive.”

He closed the file.

Tomorrow, after everything, he would see her again.
