After Thirty Years of Silver Wedding, I Finally Lived for Myself Chapter 1

On the day of our 30th wedding anniversary, my husband, William Fletcher, brought his first love back home.

"Lauren's husband has passed away," he explained matter-of-factly. "She lost my child when she was young, and now she can't have children because of it. This is my debt to her. Taking care of her in her old age is my responsibility."

Looking at their hands, tightly intertwined, I finally realized that in all our 30 years of marriage, William had never really let her go.

We had a huge argument, and that night, I packed my things and moved in with our son, Jenson Fletcher.

"Mom, you're being petty," Jenson said. "Dad took me to Lauren's tutoring classes for ten years, and she never charged us a dime. She treats me like her own son. You're always nagging me, but she never does."

Later, when Lauren became critically ill, they wanted to empty our savings just to save her life.

I didn't try to stop them. Instead, I left a divorce agreement behind.

After all these years of sacrifice for this family, it was time to start living for myself.

——

Our anniversary came, and William didn't come home.

A few days ago, we'd had a huge fight, and before anything could be resolved, he'd left on a business trip.

On the actual day, he sent Jenson to deliver me a bracelet.

Jenson said, "Dad asked me to give this to you. He knows he messed up before he left and argued with you. Since he couldn't make it back today, take this as an apology.

"You're both pushing sixty. You're old enough to stop making such a scene. Just live in peace, will you? It's embarrassing to keep fighting like this."

Even though he had no clue why William and I had fought, he spoke sincerely.

I ran my fingers along the bracelet, feeling an unbearable sense of sadness.

For all these years of marriage, I had tried to make peace, too.

But just a few days ago, I had found something in William's suit pocket. It was the receipt for a wire transfer. The name on it? None other than Lauren Cook.

I wasn't shocked yet. But when I went to the bank to investigate discreetly, I found that William had been sending money to her every month for the past 30 years.

And in the memo sections, he had written countless notes.

At that moment, the perfect family I had worked so hard to build crumbled.

I couldn't believe that William, who had always appeared so loving, had been hiding this secret from me for so long.

When I confronted him with the evidence, he simply shrugged. "There's nothing between us."

"Mom, just forgive Dad already," Jenson said, tugging at my sleeve.

I glanced at the bracelet, then over at my daughter-in-law and grandson, who were having breakfast. I decided not to escalate the situation.

But as soon as I sat down at the table, Reyna Jordan muttered, just loud enough for me to hear. "Old women can be so dramatic."

Before I could respond, she leaned over to Jenson. "Honey, I heard William is bringing his first love home. Is that true?"

Jenson stiffened for a moment before snapping at her. "What are you talking about? She's just an old classmate."

Embarrassed, Reyna shot him a glare.

A long, awkward silence followed before she rolled her eyes, muttering, "That's not what you said when you talked to William."

She glanced at me and said, "Mom, I heard Dad's first love was smart. What did he see in you?"

It wasn't the first time someone had questioned why a professor like William would marry someone like a country girl like me.

Back then, when people asked, he would always say, "When you love someone, status or background doesn't matter."

I truly believed he loved me.

But after we married, and I saw how he used my father's connections as a village official to secure a city job, I realized William wasn't as simple as I'd thought.

I had forgotten some things over the years.

But I never forgot who he truly was.

It was just a shame that we never truly understood each other.

As I reflected on the past, the doorbell rang.

My grandson, holding a drumstick, shouted excitedly, "Grandpa's home."

I snapped out of my thoughts, glad for an excuse to escape the awkward moment. I got up to open the door.

But as soon as I opened it, I froze.

There stood William, tall and composed as ever. His scholarly demeanor was in place, fitting for a university professor.

But he was pushing a wheelchair.

And sitting in that wheelchair was the woman who had haunted me for 30 years.

Lauren smiled softly as she held William's hand, looking up at me.

"Long time no see," she said.
