Leaving Behind My Heartless Husband Chapter 1

My husband, Michael Addam, was never there for me or Lily. It was always Allison—my ex-best friend—who seemed to matter more. I spent years trying to hold our family together while he was off with her, ignoring our daughter and me. And then, Lily was gone. Losing her broke something in me.

That was the moment I finally chose myself. I filed for divorce and walked away from the lies. But just as I found my strength, a secret came out that shattered what was left of Michael.By the time Michael realized the full extent of his betrayal, it was too late. I was gone.

Now, he was drowning in regret, but I was long past caring. He lost everything, and I found myself.

"Mom, look at that cloud! It looks like a flower," Lily had said just a few hours earlier. It was one of those perfect, sunny days at the park, and we were sitting in the grass, enjoying the rare break.

I was leaning against a big willow tree, nose deep in a book, while my 6-year-old ran around, bursting with energy.

Never in my wildest dreams did I think that just three years later, we’d be in the ICU, and I’d be the only one walking out of there alive.

I lost my little girl that day—my precious Lily. She was the glue that held our small family together.

The doctors said it was a severe allergic reaction. Nuts. Those damn nuts! I should’ve paid more attention when she grabbed that snack with the white packaging.

Turned out it was packed with nuts—a lethal dose for Lily. She’d been fine one second, and then suddenly, she started coughing, gasping for air. The panic in her eyes still haunts me.

By the time the ambulance arrived, she was barely breathing. Her face was red, her lips swollen, and her eyes… they were rolling back.

The hospital was supposed to be a place of hope, but everything went wrong. The administration process was painfully slow, and with the language barrier, explaining how urgent it was felt impossible.

I kept trying to tell them she needed help—fast—but no one seemed to understand. The worst part? They didn’t have the medicine she needed for her allergy.

I shouted, I begged, I cried, but all I got were blank stares. Helplessness wrapped around me like a heavy blanket.

Despite everything I did—everything I tried—Lily’s condition just kept getting worse. And before I knew it, she was gone. My baby was gone, and I was left standing in that cold, sterile room, alone.

I remember frantically trying to call Michael, my husband. I needed him there with me, but he didn’t even pick up.

After what felt like forever, they finally gave me the news. The worst possible news. It felt like the ground just gave out beneath me.

I couldn’t breathe, couldn’t think. How could I have let this happen? I was supposed to protect Lily, and instead, I failed her in the worst way.

I broke down right there, unable to hold it in. After the tears, after the screaming, they handed me her death certificate. I stared at it, numb.

There were still so many things to do—more papers, arrangements—just to bring my baby back home. The whole process was excruciating.

I somehow made it back to our hotel, but it was like walking through a fog. I couldn’t stop crying. The room we had shared was still scattered with her little things.

It had been meant for a family vacation, a chance to reconnect. I’d been so excited to take this trip with Michael and Lily, hoping it would bring us closer.

But on the day we were supposed to leave, Michael bailed on us without warning.

I had called him, upset and confused, but all he said was, "Something came up at work, Emma. Just go without me, and don’t make a big deal out of this!"

He made it sound like I was being unreasonable for expecting him to come on a trip we had planned for months.

Still reeling from his brush-off, I tried to keep it together for Lily. She was too excited about the vacation to notice anything was wrong.

But then, at the airport, I saw it. I was scrolling through Instagram, just killing time, when a post from Allison, my so-called best friend, stopped me cold. [Thanks for taking me to paradise, M.]

The caption was burned into my brain. I knew exactly what she meant. There were pictures of her on a beach, looking smug and carefree. And there, in one of the photos, was Michael’s hand holding hers. I’d know that hand anywhere.

I clenched my phone so hard it nearly cracked. My head was spinning. I couldn’t believe it. How could he?

“Mom? What’s wrong? Is Dad not coming?” Lily asked, her little voice snapping me back to reality.

I forced a smile, trying to hold it together for her. “No, honey, Dad’s busy with work. But it’s going to be just you and me. Girls’ trip, right? We’ll have the best time.”

She lit up, so happy to be going on an adventure with me. She had no idea what was really going on, and I wasn’t going to let her see how broken I was.

I had to put on a brave face. We would make the best of it. At least, that was what I thought.

But I could never have guessed how that trip would end. What was supposed to be a fun vacation for just the two of us turned into a nightmare. A nightmare I couldn’t wake up from. The worst part was that none of it should’ve happened. If Michael had just been there, maybe everything would’ve been different.

In my confusion and desperation, I tried contacting every close friend I had, hoping someone could offer advice or at least some kind of help.

That was when Daniel, my childhood friend, reached out. He said he had connections at the embassy and could help me get things moving so I could bring Lily home. I remember bursting into tears, thanking him over and over.

The next morning, he called me again, his voice steady and reassuring. “Emma, it’s all set. I passed your info to the embassy staff, and they’ll be contacting you today. Don’t worry, everything’s going to be okay.”

Daniel had been there for me more times than I could count, especially during those critical moments in my life when I didn’t know who else to turn to.

I owed him so much. Throughout my marriage to Michael, I found myself leaning on Daniel more often than I should have.

Michael was never really present—not as a husband, not as a father. Every time I needed him, he was always "too busy," too caught up in his own world to care about ours.

I still remembered one time when I had to go in for an appendectomy. It was supposed to be a minor surgery, but they needed a family member to sign off on everything.

My parents were long gone, and the only family I had left was Michael. I called him, hoping he would come to the hospital, but instead, he yelled at me for interrupting his "important" meeting. The frustration, the anger—it was all too much.

In the end, it was Daniel who showed up. He didn’t hesitate. He was there, waiting by my side, signing the paperwork, making sure I was taken care of. I’d never forget that moment.

I was still groggy from the anesthesia, but I remember looking at him, tears in my eyes, and whispering, “I’m so sorry to bother you, Dan.” I felt like such a burden.

Daniel had always been kind, always there when I needed him most. I knew he had feelings for me, even back when we were younger. But I chose Michael.

And despite everything, despite the fact that I kept leaning on him after my choice, Daniel never complained. He just kept showing up, being the support I never got from my own husband.

The guilt weighed on me every time I looked at him, knowing that I had chosen wrong and that he still, somehow, stuck around.

It was like no matter how much I tried to push him away, Daniel remained. And now, he was here again, in the worst moment of my life, offering help without hesitation. I owed him more than I could ever repay.
