Kicked Out by My Son, I Started Over at Sixty Chapter 1

On New Year’s Eve, I was in the kitchen, focused on dinner, when my mischievous grandson, Tommy, decided to pour a whole bag of salt into the pot, completely ruining the seafood chowder I had spent all day cooking.

I saw him about to destroy another dish and quickly grabbed him.

"Tommy, dear, what you're doing is wrong. Go outside and play."

"Mommy!" he shouted, tears streaming down his face.

“What’s wrong, sweetheart?” My daughter-in-law, Natalie, rushed in, squatting down to comfort him.

"I just wanted to help Grandma cook, and she yelled at me!" Tommy cried out.

Right then, Natalie shot me a glare. "What’s wrong with you? You’re upset because you had to cook, so you’re taking it out on my son?"

I had no problem with cooking. Still, those words had a deep impact on me, and they felt like a heavy stone lodged in my chest.

Every year, as New Year’s approached, Natalie’s family—her aunts, uncles, and cousins—would visit. They continually boasted about the superior comfort of their city villa, particularly due to the heating.

And what was I doing? Stuck cooking for the entire family.

And what did I get in return? Cold, judgmental glares.

When I didn’t respond, Natalie raised her voice even louder. "It’s New Year’s, and you can’t even let us be happy, Helen? Apologize to Tommy, now!"

Apologize on New Year’s Eve?

For what?

Why should I have to endure this kind of unfair treatment?

——

As I reflected on the years, the frustration I had buried deep inside me finally came to the surface.

Ever since my son, John, started dating Natalie, I had become nothing more than an ATM for the family.

After they got married, I became the ATM and the housekeeper.

Not only did I have to take care of John and Natalie’s every need, but every holiday, Natalie’s relatives would show up to 'celebrate.' They’d stay anywhere from a few days to a whole month. Her mother, Portia, would show up every few days, sometimes staying for months at a time.

We’re both seniors, but her mother spends her mornings and evenings out dancing at the plaza. She doesn’t even know how to cook, much less buy a single vegetable.

And me? I was their free nanny.

No, even worse than that.

At least a nanny gets paid, but I wasn’t even a free nanny. I was also expected to pay for everything.

Whenever we went on a trip, there was never enough room in the car, or the tickets were too expensive. There was always some excuse, but Natalie’s mom was always invited. Sometimes she’d even bring her little sister, leaving me behind.

For the sake of John’s happiness, I kept my mouth shut. And so, the arrival of my grandson, Tommy, made me think it was all worth it.

However, in the end, I realized how wrong I had been.

I was the one who made his milk formula, changed his diaper, and rocked him to sleep. But when it came to his education, I had no say.

I’ve never been the sort to interfere with the younger generation’s choices. I prefer to do more and talk less. But in this house, even the right to speak was taken from me.

When Tommy misbehaved, I couldn’t say anything. I had already raised my concerns, but Natalie threw a fit, claiming I wasn’t his legal guardian and had no right to discipline him.

For the sake of peace, I stopped getting involved.

As a result, Tommy became more and more unruly in front of me. Sometimes, he even swore at me, and Natalie didn’t step in.

In this family, my status was lower than that of a dog.

I used to tell myself I was old already, half-buried in the ground. Just endure a few more years, I thought, and it would all pass soon enough.

But today, I couldn’t take it anymore.

Today was my birthday. At my age, birthdays didn’t mean much anymore. Still, when my husband, Daniel, was alive, we always found a way to celebrate.

After he passed, no one has remembered it since.

Still, this year was different.

It was my sixtieth birthday.

Daniel always said this milestone deserved a big celebration. Yet, I remained in the kitchen, all because my grandson misbehaved. And just because I told my grandson to play outside, Natalie insisted I apologize.

The bitterness surged within me, burning fiercely until it shattered.

In the living room, laughter rang out. Over twenty guests were chatting, eating, and drinking, but not a single one of them offered to help in the kitchen.

'Eat… eat shit, all of you!' A voice inside me screamed.

I yanked off my apron, shoved past my daughter-in-law blocking the doorway, and made my way outside.
