Jilted Bride: Marrying The Disabled Billionaire Chapter 1

Amelia POV:

"Do you, Amelia Evans, take Devon Maynard to be your lawfully wedded husband?"

The officiant's voice echoed in the grand ballroom of The Plaza Hotel. Hundreds of eyes were on me, their gazes a warm, heavy blanket. The light from the crystal chandeliers overhead made the lace on my wedding dress shimmer. It felt like a dream.

I looked at my fiancé, Devon Maynard. He was the star forward for the New York Specters, handsome enough to be on a magazine cover. His smile had been the center of my world for three years.

"I do," I breathed out, my voice trembling with an emotion so big it threatened to swallow me whole.

A ripple of gentle laughter and applause went through the guests. I saw my adoptive mother, Glenda, dabbing at her eyes with a silk handkerchief. My adoptive father, Lanny, nodded with satisfaction to a business partner beside him. This wedding was as much his victory as it was mine.

The officiant turned to Devon. "And do you, Devon Maynard..."

Devon's smile was still there, but it was stretched thin. His eyes flickered down to his tuxedo pocket.

A faint vibration. I saw it. I felt it. A tremor of wrongness in the perfect picture.

His smile froze.

"... in sickness and in health, for richer or for poorer..." the officiant continued, oblivious.

Devon wasn't listening. His gaze was distant, lost.

He couldn't resist. His hand shot into his pocket, pulling out his phone. Just a glance.

The color drained from his face. It was a stark, bone-white panic I had never seen before.

The joy in my chest curdled, turning into a cold, hard knot. "Devon?" I whispered. "What is it?"

He didn't look at me. His lips moved, forming a name without a sound.

"Kaelyn."

The officiant stopped, confused. A murmur started to spread through the hall, a tide of whispers rising to meet the silence.

Devon finally turned to me. His eyes were a mess of apology and conflict, but underneath it all was a terrifying finality.

"I'm sorry, Amelia," he said, his voice a low, urgent rush. "I have to go. Kaelyn... she needs me."

My brain went blank. The words didn't compute. "Needs you? Now?"

He squeezed my hand, a quick, final pressure. "She's going to kill herself. I can't let her die."

The words were a physical blow. My breath hitched.

He didn't wait for a response. He let go of my hand, turned, and ran.

I reached out, my fingers grasping at the empty air where his tuxedo jacket had been. My body swayed, the heavy dress suddenly a dead weight.

He ran. In his wedding suit, under the gaze of hundreds of guests, chased by the blinding flash of cameras, he bolted through the grand doors of the ballroom and out of my life.

Time stopped. The officiant stood with his mouth open.

The whispers exploded into open chatter. "Oh my god, he actually ran!" "Who is Kaelyn Massey? I think I've seen her in the tabloids."

My adoptive sister, Mabel, let out a theatrical gasp, but I could hear the glee bubbling beneath it.

The camera flashes became a frenzy, a machine-gun assault of light. The reporters, smelling blood, aimed every lens at me. The bride left at the altar.

My cheeks burned. Shame pressed against my skin like a branding iron. I had become the punchline of a joke I didn't even know was being told.

I clenched my fists, my nails digging into my palms. The sharp sting was the only thing keeping me upright.

I wasn't sad he left. I was furious that he did it like this. In front of the world, grinding my dignity into the expensive carpet.

Tears didn't have a chance to well up—they were scorched dry by the fire that rose from my stomach, burning through my throat.

I turned to face a reporter with a camera. His face was alight with excitement, like a vulture spotting carrion.

His voice cut through the noise, sharp and cruel. "Miss Evans, what are your thoughts on your fiancé choosing another woman on your wedding day?"

I stared into his lens and said, slowly, each word deliberate: "My thought is—you'd better take a clear shot of this. Later I'll buy the copyright, frame it, and hang it on the wall of my bakery to remind myself: next time I pick a man, I'll check first if he has a brain."

The reporter froze. The flashbulbs paused for a second.
