In the Shadow of My Son's Death Chapter 1

Chapter 1: Shattered Trust

The call from Ethan came just as I was finishing up with dinner preparations. His voice was sharp, urgent, and entirely out of character. “Grace, I need you to pick up Sam from school. Something’s come up, and I can’t make it,” he said, his tone carrying an edge of stress that made my heart race.

I was barely able to sit up straight; the fever I’d been fighting all day had left me feeling dizzy and weak. “Is everything okay?” I asked, my voice trembling slightly. But Ethan had already hung up, leaving me with a growing knot of worry in my stomach. Sam was only five. The thought of him being alone at school filled me with dread.

I forced myself out of bed and drove to the school, my head throbbing with every bump in the road. When I arrived, the sight that met me was a blur of flashing lights and anxious faces. My heart dropped as I saw a group of people gathered around something on the ground. Pushing through the crowd, I was horrified to find Sam lying motionless on the pavement. A car had struck him and fled the scene, leaving my precious boy alone in his final moments.

Desperately, I fell to my knees beside him, cradling his lifeless body. The world seemed to spin around me as I sobbed uncontrollably, feeling as though my heart was being torn apart.

In the midst of my grief, my phone buzzed. I pulled it out with shaking hands and saw a post from Emma Parker, Ethan’s old flame. The post read, “Thank you for being my rock today. Couldn’t have gotten through this without you!” The accompanying photo shows Ethan and Emma together, their faces close, their smiles intimate and affectionate.

My heart pounded with a mix of anger and disbelief. I snapped a screenshot of the post and sent it to Ethan with a simple, biting message: “Is this why you left Sam alone?”

The response didn’t come until after Sam’s funeral. The message I received from Ethan was cold and indifferent: “Sam was old enough to manage by himself. Emma needed me more.”

His lack of remorse and the way he continued to prioritize Emma over our son made my heartache even worse. I stared at the screen, the words cutting through me like a knife. I typed out a message, my fingers trembling: “I want a divorce.” With a final, painful press, I sent it and then blocked his number. The decision was clear, but the pain was overwhelming.

Ethan had been the center of my world for ten years. We had grown up together, our lives intertwined from childhood through high school and into adulthood. We had been through so much together, and I had always hoped that one day, he would love me with the same intensity I had for him. But now, I realized the painful truth: I had always been second to Hannah.

The funeral was a blur of sorrow. I could barely remember the details, only the suffocating weight of my grief. I knelt beside Sam’s grave, the tears flowing freely as I tried to come to terms with the loss. My heart felt as though it was being squeezed in a vice.

As I stood up, feeling completely drained and hollow, I saw Ethan approaching with Emma beside him. Emma held a bouquet of flowers, her face a mask of false sympathy. Ethan’s gaze, when it met mine, was devoid of warmth or regret. His eyes were cold, almost as if he was irritated by my presence.

“Grace,” he said, his voice carrying a hint of impatience. “I don’t understand why you’re making this so difficult. Sam was just a child. Emma and I have moved on. Can’t you just let this go?”

His words struck me like a physical blow. I had hoped for some sign of remorse or compassion, but instead, I faced his cold indifference. “Step aside,” I said, trying to keep my voice steady and distant. “I don’t want to have anything to do with you anymore.”

I turned away, feeling a mix of anger and heartbreak as I walked away from the cemetery.
