My Greedy Son Made Me Ration Toilet Paper,So I Sold Everything Chapter 1

Harold Acevedo and I scraped by for half our lives, pinching every penny we had.

The one time we let ourselves live a little was a single week-long vacation.

When we got home, our son and daughter-in-law were waiting to ambush us.

They tore into us: "How do you two get more irresponsible the older you get?"

We were furious. "We spent our own money. How is that any of your business?"

Our son had the nerve to shout: "You're spending MY money!"

"Everything you have is going to be mine eventually!"

"The more you blow now, the less there is for me!"

We were stunned by how shameless they were.

And when their threats to hand over our assets didn't work, what came next was even worse.

The two of them started policing every cent we spent.

Groceries couldn't exceed five dollars. No air conditioning, even when it was a hundred and four degrees outside. We were rationed two squares of toilet paper per trip to the bathroom.

And the most unforgivable part? To save a few dollars on medication, they put Harold in the ICU, clinging to life.

You think you're entitled to our money? You think it's yours by right?

Fine. We'll spend every last dime ourselves.

And then, just for good measure, we'll drain every cent of yours too.

...

Harold and I stood in the doorway with our suitcases, and there wasn't even a place to sit down.

The two squatters who'd taken over our home were holding court, tag-teaming us like it was a tribunal.

Phineas Cobb sat on the couch with one leg crossed over the other, his voice dripping with that snide, mocking tone he'd perfected.

"Mom, Dad. Wow. Living the high life, huh?"

"That little trip must've run you, what, ten grand at least?"

"You couldn't have put that toward my mortgage instead?"

Bridget Sears was half-reclined on the other end of the couch, her eyes locked on the two suitcases of souvenirs we'd brought back.

"Mom, don't blame us for saying something, but you got scammed."

"Souvenirs are a racket. They prey on seniors like you. You can get the same stuff online for half the price."

"Honestly, with judgment like yours, you're one step away from falling for a pyramid scheme."

Harold and I both frowned. The anger was building, slow and steady.

Phineas glanced at us. Not only did he not back off, he twisted the knife deeper.

"Mom, Dad, you can't keep spending like this. You need to think about the long term."

"Look, I'm your only son. I've got a family of my own now."

"Here's what we'll do. Transfer all the savings to me. Put the house in my name."

"Your pension checks? Just forward those to me every month."

"I'll manage everything for you. That way you won't waste it."

Harold and I stared at each other. The disbelief in his eyes mirrored my own.

"Well, well," I said, letting out a cold laugh.

"So this time it's not a few thousand here and there. You want it all in one shot?"

"If we hand everything over, how exactly are we supposed to survive?"

Phineas leaned back against the couch, unbothered.

"You're getting up there in years. You eat at home, you live at home. How much could you possibly need?"

"We'll give you, I don't know, eight hundred, maybe a thousand a month for living expenses. That's plenty."

My frown deepened. Nothing coming out of his mouth sounded like something a human being would say.

"Eight hundred a month? Plenty? Plenty for what? To live on bread and water?"

"Even if we had no expenses, old people get sick. That's just reality. And that costs money."

Bridget jumped right in, her smile syrupy and fake.

"Mom, the way you say that, it's like we're some kind of monsters."

"If you two get sick, of course we'd take care of you. We'd take you to the doctor ourselves, obviously."

Take care of us. Right.

I let out a sharp scoff.

Harold and I had emptied out most of our life savings to buy Phineas a car, a house, and pay for his wedding.

We'd never seen a single dollar back. Never once sat down to a meal he'd cooked.

After he got married, it only got worse. He didn't visit for holidays. Didn't show up for birthdays.

On the rare occasion he called, it was always the same routine: poor-mouthing, playing the victim, and circling back to money within three sentences.
