He followed me into the kitchen, shutting the glass pocket door behind him with enough force to rattle the panes.

"Have you completely lost your mind?" I hissed, lowering my voice so it wouldn't carry. "You brought a stranger into our home? On our anniversary?"

"Don't start," Liam snapped, crossing his arms. "Sarah isn't a stranger. I told you about her months ago—she’s an old college friend who moved back to the city. Her health is terrible right now, and she has no family here."

"I don't care if she's the Queen of England!" My hands trembled, and I set the wine opener on the granite island so I wouldn't drop it. "This is our fifth anniversary, Liam! Look at the table. Look at the cake! We had plans!"

"Plans can be rescheduled, Maya," he said coldly. "A human being's well-being can't. Why are you always so self-centered?"

"Dad?"

Noah burst around the corner, his small sneakers skidding on the floor. At seven years old, he had Liam's dark hair and sharp brown eyes. He had been playing video games in his room waiting for dinner.

"Dad, you're home!" Noah yelled. Then he stopped dead in his tracks, his eyes landing on the woman standing in the living room archway.

Sarah smiled down at him, stepping into view. "Hey there, buddy."

The room seemed to spin.

Every late night I spent putting cool cloths on his feverish forehead, every early morning I packed his lunch with little hand-drawn notes, every boundary I set to teach him the value of patience—all of it was erased by a fifty-dollar plastic robot.

I stood frozen in the middle of the kitchen.
