I Raised His Mistress’s Son for Ten Years Chapter 1

After ten years of marriage, I found a paternity test on my husband's computer saying the son I'd raised since birth wasn't mine.

I tapped the trackpad of Victor’s laptop, searching for the Q3 merger files I needed for tomorrow’s board meeting. My husband’s Manhattan study was quiet, the only sound the hum of city traffic fourteen floors below. Tomorrow was our tenth wedding anniversary. I just wanted to print the damn spreadsheets and go to bed.

Instead, my cursor hovered over a folder titled *Personal*. Inside sat a single encrypted PDF.

I typed his usual password. Incorrect.

I tried Oliver’s birthday. The file unlocked.

Lines of medical jargon filled the screen. I scrolled to the bottom, my eyes catching a bolded sentence.

*Eleanor Hayes is excluded as Oliver Hayes's biological mother.*

I stared at the glowing pixels. Ten seconds passed. The grandfather clock ticked in the hallway.

Anger didn't come. Just a cold, hollow sense of absurdity.

"I pushed him out of my own body," I muttered to the empty room.

Oliver was the baby I brought home from the maternity ward. I held him through every fever. He called me Mom every single day for a decade. If he wasn't mine, where was my real child? And why did Victor have this test? I had never taken one.

"What are you doing on my computer?"

I spun around in the leather chair. Victor stood in the doorway, his tie loosened, a glass of scotch in his left hand.

"Victor," I said, pointing at the screen. "What is this?"

His gaze darted to the laptop. The blood drained from his face, leaving his skin a chalky white. He didn't offer a confused frown. He didn't ask what I was reading.

He lunged forward and slammed the laptop shut. The loud crack echoed off the mahogany bookshelves.

"You have no right to snoop," he snapped, his voice sharp and defensive.

"Snoop? I was looking for the merger documents." I stood up, closing the distance between us. "Explain that report. Right now."

"There's nothing to explain." He gripped the edge of the desk. "It's a mistake. A spam file. Nothing."

"A spam file with our son's name on it? With my name?"

"Ten years, Eleanor." His jaw tightened, a muscle jumping beneath his skin. "Ten years, and you still don't trust me?"

A laugh slipped past my lips. It was a dry, ugly sound.

"You're accusing me of a lack of trust? You?" I asked.

"I work eighty hours a week to provide for this family," he shouted, his knuckles turning white against the wood. "I don't have the energy to deal with your paranoia tonight."

"Paranoia?" I countered, my voice rising. "I just read a DNA report that says the child I birthed isn't mine. How long have you known?"

"I said it's fake!"

"Then open the laptop," I challenged. "Let's read it together. Let's call the lab listed at the top."

"I am not indulging this insanity."

He turned on his heel and marched out. The heavy oak door slammed shut behind him.

I didn't chase him. I didn't cry.

Instead, I pulled open the bottom drawer of the desk. Inside rested a sleek leather folder. I took out the documents I had signed earlier this afternoon—a transfer of fifteen percent of my company shares. It was supposed to be his anniversary gift tomorrow.

I gripped the thick paper. I ripped it down the middle. Then again. I tore the pages into tiny, jagged pieces and let them flutter into the brass wastebasket.

The smell of frying eggs filled the kitchen the next morning. I flipped them in the pan, sliding them onto a plate just as Oliver ran into the room, his backpack slung over one shoulder.

"Morning, Mom!" he chirped, grabbing a piece of toast.

"Eat your eggs, Ollie," I said, handing him a fork.

"Dad already left?" he asked between bites.

"He had an early meeting," I lied smoothly.

He shoveled the food into his mouth, oblivious to the storm raging inside my chest. I watched his hazel eyes, his messy brown hair. He looked so much like Victor. Did he look like me? I used to think he had my nose.

Twenty minutes later, we were in my SUV, stopped at a red light on 5th Avenue.

"Your collar is twisted," I said, reaching over from the driver's seat.

"Mom, I can fix it," he whined, batting my hands away.

"Hold still."

I smoothed the fabric of his polo shirt. My fingers brushed the nape of his neck. I pinched three strands of hair close to the root and yanked.

"Ouch!" Oliver rubbed his head, frowning at me.

I quickly slipped the hairs, follicles intact, into the pocket of my blazer.

"Sorry, sweetheart. A static shock," I told him.

He tilted his head, studying my face. "Mom, are you okay?"

I forced a smile, tucking a stray curl behind his ear. "I'm fine, sweetheart. Have a good day at school."

The light turned green. I pulled up to the drop-off zone, kissed his cheek, and watched him run through the double doors.

The second the car door clicked shut, my smile vanished.

I drove straight to a private DNA testing facility downtown. I handed over the hairs and paid double for the expedited service.

Back in the car, I connected my phone to the Bluetooth and dialed.

"Rachel," I said the moment she answered.

"Eleanor. To what do I owe the pleasure? Need a background check on a new executive?" my private investigator asked, her tone light.

"No. I need you to check Victor."

Silence stretched over the line for a brief second.

"Your husband?" she asked.

"Bank accounts, hotels, business trips, women. Everything. Leave no stone unturned."

"Eleanor, are you sure? Once we open this door, you can't unsee what we find."

"I'm sure," I replied, my grip tightening on the steering wheel. "I need to know exactly who I've been married to for the last ten years."

"Understood. I'll start immediately."

By eight o'clock that evening, I was dragging my suitcase down the hall. I pushed open the door to the guest room and tossed my bags onto the mattress.

Footsteps hammered up the stairs. Victor appeared in the doorway, his eyes wide, blocking my exit.

"What is this?" he demanded, gesturing to the suitcase. "Are you out of your mind? We have a dinner reservation in an hour. It's our anniversary."

"Cancel it." I unzipped my bag and started pulling out clothes.

"Eleanor, stop acting like a child." He stepped into the room, reaching for my arm.

I flinched back, swatting his hand away. "Don't touch me."

"You are tearing this family apart over a piece of trash you found on my hard drive!"

"Then prove it's trash," I challenged, meeting his gaze. "Call the clinic. Let's do a new test together. Right now. You, me, and Oliver."

He froze. His chest stopped heaving. The angry flush faded from his cheeks.

"I'm not humoring this," he muttered, looking away.

"I'm done asking questions you're too afraid to answer," I said, my voice dropping to a whisper.

I grabbed the brass handle of the door and pulled.

"Get out," I told him.

He didn't argue. He didn't yell. He simply backed into the hallway, his silence louder than any scream.

I shut the door and locked it.

He wasn't afraid I would misunderstand him. He was terrified I would find out the truth.

My phone buzzed on the nightstand. A text from Rachel lit up the screen.

*Got something. You need to see this flight manifest from ten years ago. He wasn't in Chicago the night Oliver was born.*
