My Husband Wanted Me to Lose My Memory. So I Pretended I Did. Chapter 1

"Mr. Whitmore is entertaining a VIP client in the private lounge," the secretary said, stepping quickly into my path to block the hallway.

I sidestepped her, adjusting my grip on the pink bakery box that held the anniversary cake I had spent three hours making.

I pushed the heavy oak door open an inch, expecting to surprise my husband.

"Ryan... do you really not love Charlotte at all?" a woman's voice purred from inside.

The voice stopped me cold. It belonged to Vanessa Hart.

Through the narrow gap, I saw her perched on my husband's lap, her fingers tangled in his dark hair.

Ryan leaned forward, pressing his mouth against the curve of her neck. "I only married her because she looks exactly like you did when you were young."

My fingers went numb.

"She's just a replacement," he murmured against her skin.

The bakery box slipped from my grasp. It hit the hardwood floor with a wet smack. The cardboard burst open, smearing vanilla buttercream across the polished planks.

Inside the room, Vanessa shifted on his lap. Her eyes flicked toward the cracked door. A cruel, knowing smirk played on her glossed lips.

She intentionally raised her voice. "What if she finds out about us?"

Ryan didn't even look toward the noise. He grabbed her waist and flipped her onto the leather sofa, pinning her down.

"Let her find out," Ryan scoffed, his tone laced with heavy disdain.

"She's so boring, Ryan," Vanessa complained, tracing a circle on his collarbone. "Does she even know how to dress? Every time I see a photo of you two, she looks like a plain, subservient little mouse."

"That's exactly why she's useful," Ryan answered, his voice flat and calculating. "A mouse doesn't ask questions. She just sits in the corner and waits for crumbs. She gave up the Sinclair family for me. She has nothing left. She won't leave."

I clamped both hands over my mouth. The metallic taste of blood flooded my tongue as my teeth bit brutally into my inner lip.

"Still," Vanessa sighed, feigning a pout. "I hate sharing you. It makes me sick knowing she sleeps in your bed, playing the role of your perfect wife."

"It's temporary," Ryan assured her. "You know the acquisition plan is almost finished. Once I secure the final shares, things will change."

"Change how?" Vanessa asked. "Are you finally going to divorce her?"

"Divorce is too messy. She might fight for half my assets." Ryan chuckled, a cold, hollow sound that made my stomach turn. "I have a better strategy."

Vanessa tilted her head. "Tell me."

"Once the plan is complete, I'll make Charlotte disappear from this world."

I stopped breathing. My chest tightened until my ribs ached.

"Disappear?" Vanessa whispered. "You're going to kill her?"

"No," Ryan said smoothly. "I have a physician on the payroll. Dr. Aris. He specializes in experimental neuro-trauma. We arrange a car accident. Something severe enough to cause a coma. When she's under his care, he administers a series of targeted chemical treatments. By the time she wakes up, her past will be completely fragmented."

He brushed a stray lock of hair from Vanessa's cheek.

"That way," Ryan whispered, "I get the woman I truly love, and I keep the most obedient stand-in. She'll never question me again."

"And if it goes wrong?" Vanessa asked.

"If her brain takes too much damage and she turns into a vegetable?" Ryan shrugged, a careless, brutal gesture. "Then I play the grieving, devoted husband. I get her shares anyway. It's a win-win."

Instead of crying, a dry, harsh laugh clawed up my throat. I swallowed it down, choking on the sheer absurdity of my own blindness. The tears that had pricked my eyes vanished.

An absolute, freezing calm washed over me.

I didn't kick the door open. I didn't scream his name or demand an explanation.

I reached into my coat pocket and pulled out my phone. My thumb tapped the screen, opening the voice memo app. I hit the red record button.

"Are you sure Dr. Aris can pull this off?" Vanessa asked, her tone shifting from playful to greedy.

"He owes me a massive debt," Ryan answered. "He'll induce the necessary trauma and manage her recovery. She'll wake up as a blank slate."

"You're brilliant, Ryan."

"I'm thorough," he corrected. "Now, stop talking about my wife. You're ruining the mood."

I watched the audio waves spike on my screen as their conversation dissolved into wet kisses and heavy sighs.

After securing two minutes of damning evidence, I saved the file.

I turned my back on the ruined cake, stepped over the mess of pink frosting, and walked out of the building.

Three hours later, the digital clock on my nightstand flashed 11:42 PM.

The penthouse was entirely silent. Ryan had texted an hour ago, claiming he was stuck at the office dealing with an emergency merger issue.

I sat on the edge of the mattress, staring at the contact list on my phone.

My thumb hovered over a number I hadn't dialed in three years.

I pressed call.

The line rang twice before a sharp click signaled the connection.

"Alexander," I said, my voice steady, stripped of the pathetic devotion that had defined me for the past thirty-six months.

"Charlotte," Alexander Thorne replied. His deep baritone held no surprise, only a quiet, dangerous intensity. "I saw the calendar. Today is your anniversary. I assumed you'd be celebrating your perfect marriage."

"The marriage is over," I stated flatly.

A brief pause hung on the line. The faint clinking of ice against glass echoed through the speaker.

"Are you sure about this?" he asked. "You swore to your father you would rather die on the streets than step foot in the Sinclair estate again. You abandoned everything for him."

"I was blind," I answered. "And I almost did die. He's planning to arrange an accident to take my memory and my shares."

"I see." The temperature of Alexander's voice plummeted to absolute zero. "Give me a name, and I'll have him handled before morning."

"No," I instructed. "He wants to play games with my life. I want to dismantle his piece by piece. I want to come home."

"Welcome back, Charlotte," Alexander said, without a single ounce of hesitation. "Your position on the board has been waiting for you."

"I'll need my old access codes," I told him, gripping the phone tighter.

"They were never deactivated," Alexander answered smoothly. "What's your first move?"

I reached into the nightstand drawer and pulled out the crisp, unsigned legal waiver—the document I had drafted to surrender my final inheritance rights to Ryan.

I grabbed my metal letter opener and drove the sharp point directly through Ryan's printed name, pinning the paperwork to the wood.
