I Married Him With a Lie, Now I Leave With the Truth Chapter 1

It was our second wedding anniversary. Two years with Damien, yet my heart still skipped whenever I thought about him.

I was seated beside the window at our favorite restaurant, the one that overlooked the glittering city skyline. At night, the lights always shimmered like they were alive, and Damien once told me they reminded him of me. I checked my phone again—maybe the sixth time now—and reread the message I had sent him earlier.

“I’m already here. Don’t keep me waiting too long.”

Two hours had passed.

A waiter approached, offering a courteous smile. “Would you like to place your order now, ma’am?”

I shook my head gently. “I’ll wait a little longer. My husband should be here soon.”

At least, that’s what I kept telling myself.

Then I noticed a familiar figure approaching—sharp heels tapping against the floor, her red lipstick far too striking for an intimate dinner like this. Camille. Damien’s secretary.

My smile faded instantly. “Camille? What are you doing here?”

She pulled out the chair across from me and rested a hand on it, her lips curling into a faint, knowing smile. “Clara, sorry to interrupt your anniversary. Damien asked me to inform you he won’t be able to come. He’s at the hospital with Ethan.”

My chest tightened. “Ethan? What happened?”

“There was a minor accident. Nothing life-threatening, but Damien rushed over as soon as he heard.”

I pushed my chair back so quickly it scraped against the floor. “Why didn’t he call me? He knows how close I am to Ethan. Take me there—I’ll go with you.”

But instead of agreeing, Camille’s expression shifted into something unsettling. She folded her arms, studying me with thinly veiled amusement.

“You really are naïve, aren’t you?”

I blinked, caught off guard. “Excuse me?”

She tilted her head, her tone laced with something between pity and ridicule. “Doesn’t it seem odd to you? Every time Ethan needs something, Damien abandons everything—his meetings, his plans, even you.”

“Well… of course,” I replied, trying to keep my voice steady. “Ethan’s his younger brother. That’s family.”

Camille let out a soft laugh. “Brother? Clara, you really believe that?”

My stomach knotted. “What exactly are you implying?”

She leaned closer, lowering her voice. “Ethan isn’t his little brother… he’s his son.”

For a moment, the words made no sense. I stared at her, my mind blank, until she casually dropped a folded envelope onto the table. It slid toward me, stopping beside my untouched wine glass.

“A DNA report,” she said calmly. “Since you trust him so much, I figured you deserved to see the truth.”

Then she turned and walked away, leaving me frozen in my seat as everything around me seemed to blur.

My fingers trembled as I opened the envelope. Two names jumped out at me—Damien Caldwell and Ethan Caldwell. Beneath them, the result was clear: 99.99% probability of paternity.

No… this couldn’t be real.

If it were true, Damien would have told me. He wouldn’t hide something this huge. There had to be an error. Or Camille had fabricated it. She must have.

I grabbed my bag and hurried out, ignoring the curious stares and the waiter calling after me. The cool night air hit my face as I rushed to my car. My hands shook so badly that I struggled to insert the key into the ignition.

All I could picture was Damien—his warm smile, the way he held my hand, the promises he whispered. He had told me I was the only one. That there were no secrets between us.

But what if that wasn’t true?

I drove to the hospital, my chest tightening with every passing minute. The parking lot was almost empty when I arrived. I hurried inside, my heels echoing loudly against the polished floor. The fluorescent lights buzzed faintly overhead, casting a harsh, sterile glow.

“Excuse me,” I said to the nurse at the counter. “Ethan Caldwell—do you know where his room is?”

She glanced at her chart. “East wing, third floor.”

“Thank you.”

I walked quickly, my heartbeat pounding in my ears. But just as I reached the corner of the hallway, voices stopped me.

Familiar voices.

Damien’s—and my mother-in-law’s.

I halted just out of sight, their conversation carrying clearly through the quiet corridor.

“You’re indulging your brother too much,” Regina said sharply. “That’s why he’s becoming so spoiled. He barely respects anyone and keeps demanding your attention.”

Damien let out a tired breath. “What do you expect me to do? Of course I spoil him. He’s not my brother, Regina. He’s my son.”

My heart seemed to stop.

So it was true.

I leaned against the wall, struggling to steady my breathing, but my chest felt too tight.

There was a short pause before Regina let out a cold laugh. “Your son? Try saying that when everyone actually knows the truth. You haven’t even told Clara. When are you planning to? She loves you—don’t you think she deserves to know?”

“I’m not telling her,” Damien replied quietly but firmly. “Not now. Not ever. And I’d appreciate it if you kept quiet too. If she discovers this, everything we’ve built will fall apart.”

“Everything you’ve built, you mean,” Regina corrected dryly.

“You know we need her,” Damien said, his voice sharpening. “Her reputation, her connections—she’s one of the most respected anchors in the network. Our business benefits from that. That’s the only reason I married her.”

The hallway seemed to spin. My fingers went numb as I held onto the wall.

Damien continued, his tone disturbingly casual. “Besides, she’s not innocent either. She hid her background. She’s terrified that the truth about her family will destroy her career. That’s why I can keep her under control. She won’t leave, even if she learns everything… because she knows I can ruin her.”

A faint ringing filled my ears, drowning out everything else.

I wanted to step out, confront him, demand answers—but my voice refused to come. I stood there silently, listening as the man I loved destroyed every illusion I had about our marriage.

The life I thought we had—our anniversaries, our laughter, the quiet moments I believed were filled with love—crumbled one piece at a time.

And as I slowly stepped back, a painful realization settled in.

I didn’t know Damien at all.

Or maybe… I didn’t know myself anymore either—because I had also hidden the truth about who I was, just so his family would finally accept me.
