I Fell for My Dead Sister's Cowboy Husband Chapter 1

I came back to Montana because my mother was sick and because I had finally run out of excuses to stay away from the ranch where my dead sister’s husband was raising their daughter.

Three years earlier, I had skipped Mara’s wedding after the ugliest fight of our lives.

That winter, she died on an icy road before I ever apologized.

When I walked into Caleb Wade’s kitchen, four-year-old Rosie stared at my face like she had seen a ghost.

Then she threw both arms around my waist and called me Mommy.

For one reckless second, the guilt I had carried since Mara’s funeral went quiet.

Rosie showed me her horse drawings, dragged my suitcase toward the guest room, and asked if I could stay forever.

Caleb watched us with his jaw locked so hard I could see the muscle jump.

He pulled Rosie gently off me and put himself between us.

“Don’t let her call you that.”

“I know I’m not Mara, Caleb.”

“She barely remembers her mother.”

“Then don’t give her another woman with Mara’s face and teach her that losing people means they can be replaced.”

"Give me the pharmacy bag."

Caleb didn't offer a handshake or a nod of greeting when I dragged my Pelican camera case and a single battered suitcase onto the porch of Clearwater Ranch. He just reached out and took the plastic sack of my mother's prescriptions right out of my hand.

"Elaine is stable," he said, checking the typed labels on the orange bottles. "But the doctors made it clear today. Her recovery is going to take months, not weeks."

Months. My stomach twisted into a hard knot. The deposit for my first solo photography exhibition in New York had already drained my savings account down to double digits. I couldn't afford a long-term motel in Montana, and I certainly couldn't leave my mother alone while her heart failed.

"I'll take the guest room," I told him, pushing past his broad shoulders to get through the front door. "Just until she's back on her feet."

"Keep your gear contained," Caleb warned, closing the door behind us. "I don't want tripping hazards in the hall."

I walked straight into the kitchen, desperate for a glass of water.

A little girl sat at the massive oak island, a fistful of crayons scattered across the countertop. Rosie. She dropped a blue wax stick the second I walked in. Her wide brown eyes locked onto my face, tracking my every move.

Before I could say hello, she slid off the tall stool. Her sneakers hit the linoleum with a squeak, and she launched herself at my legs. Her small arms wrapped tight around my waist, her face pressing into my denim jacket.

"Mommy."

The word gutted me. Guilt, buried for three years, ripped open my chest. I had skipped Mara's wedding. I had fled this exact house mere hours after her funeral. Now, her daughter was clinging to me.

Caleb crossed the kitchen in three long strides. He didn't yell, but his hands were firm as he gripped his daughter's shoulders and pried her fingers away from my clothes.

"Rosie, look at me," he instructed, kneeling to her eye level. "This is Aunt Lena. Not Mommy."

Rosie refused to let go of my cuff. She tugged me closer and shoved a crumpled piece of paper toward my chest. It was a crayon drawing of a woman, copied from a faded Polaroid paperclipped to the corner of the page.

"She is the person in the picture," Rosie argued, her chin trembling as she stared up at me. "Just grown up a little."

I swallowed the sharp lump in my throat. I crouched down, forcing a smile I didn't feel, and pointed to the Polaroid of my sister.

"I'm Lena, sweetie," I murmured. "Mara's sister. But I can take pictures of your ponies tomorrow if you want."

Rosie sniffled, considering the offer. She wiped her nose with the back of her hand, then turned and ran toward the living room to fetch a fresh sketchbook.

Caleb stood up. His tall frame blocked the afternoon sun streaming through the window. "You can stay. But don't let her use you as a replacement."

I stood up, squaring my shoulders to meet his glare. "I know I'm not her better than you do, Caleb."

"Do you?" he challenged, his jaw tight. "Because walking in here looking exactly like her is already doing damage."

"I can't change my face. And I didn't come here to play house."

The silence stretched between us, thick with three years of unspoken resentment. He hadn't forgiven me for missing the wedding. I hadn't forgiven him for marrying her.

I grabbed my suitcase handle and headed for the stairs. At the top of the landing, a framed photograph dominated the drywall. Caleb and Mara, smiling in their wedding clothes. Mara looked so victorious in that picture, holding her bouquet like a trophy.

"You just want to win," I had yelled at her in our cramped apartment, tearing the bridesmaid itinerary in half.

"You always run away before people can actually choose you," Mara had fired back.

Those were the last words we ever spoke.

I stepped around the frame, aiming for the spare bedroom, when the front door swung open downstairs.

Beth Calloway walked in, balancing a large glass container of beef stew. She stopped dead when she saw me standing on the landing. Her eyes raked over my messy hair and worn boots.

"Mara's been dead three years," Beth announced, her voice echoing off the vaulted ceiling. "And you finally decide to stay in her house?"

Caleb stepped out of the kitchen, wiping his hands on a towel. "The guest room was never Mara's room, Beth."

He corrected the floor plan, but he didn't defend me. He didn't mention our mother fighting for her life in the ICU. He let Beth's accusation hang in the air.

I tightened my grip on the plastic suitcase handle. I wasn't going to use Elaine's failing heart as a shield against the town's gossip. Let them think what they wanted.

"Put the stew in the fridge, Beth," I suggested, turning the brass knob of the guest bedroom. "It's going to spoil."

I shut the door behind me, cutting off whatever insult she had ready.

The room was cold, smelling of dust and old wood. I unpacked my camera gear first, setting the lenses on the dresser. I didn't bother unpacking my clothes. Living out of a suitcase felt safer.

Midnight brought a dry throat and a headache. Thirst drove me out of the lumpy mattress. I crept down the carpeted stairs, aiming for the kitchen sink.

Voices murmured in the dark entryway. Caleb and Beth. She hadn't left.

"Having Lena here is just going to confuse Rosie more," Beth argued, her tone sharp and urgent. "You saw how she reacted today."

"I know," Caleb replied, his voice a low rumble. "But I can't kick Elaine's daughter to a cheap motel while Elaine is strapped to a hospital bed. It would kill her."

"What if Rosie gets dependent on her? What then? Lena is a flight risk. She always has been. When she leaves again, Rosie will be devastated."

A heavy pause hung in the dark space. I pressed my back against the hallway wall, the cold plaster biting through my thin shirt.

"I'll end this temporary arrangement before that happens," Caleb stated. "I won't let her get close enough to leave a mark."

My name wasn't a family tie. It was a risk he needed to manage. An infection he planned to clear out.

I didn't step into the light to scream at them. I didn't defend my right to be near my niece. I turned around, my bare feet silent on the floorboards, and went back to the guest room.

Sitting on the edge of the bed, I pulled out my phone. The screen illuminated the dark room. I opened the unread email from the Manhattan gallery director. They were asking for my final cancellation confirmation so they could give my slot to another artist.

I tapped the reply button. My thumbs moved rapidly over the glass keyboard.

"I am not canceling," I typed. "I will complete the exhibition as planned."

I hit send.
