I Divorced My Husband—Then Took the Kid and His Mom Chapter 1

"Mom, why are you still here?"

A few days ago, my husband and I got divorced. The reason was simple—he had someone else. The mistress, with her pregnant belly, came to our house and forced the issue.

We had hit the proverbial "Ten-Year Itch." He was busy with his business and faced many temptations. I had seen it coming.

Both of us wanted to handle things with dignity. Once the truth was out, we followed through with the divorce proceedings. We split our assets equally—he got the company, and I got the house.

The paperwork was done quickly, and he took all his belongings from the house, except for one thing—my mother-in-law, Sophia.

"I'm not leaving. You still call me 'Mom,' so I'm still your family. I want to live with you."

I was truly troubled by this. Which divorced woman keeps living with her mother-in-law? Especially since her son wasn't dead! What would people say?

"I don't care. Let them say whatever they want. He did something disgraceful, let people curse him. He deserves it."

Sophia was more furious than I was about my ex-husband's infidelity. If I hadn't stopped her, she would have called the police to report her son for obscenity.

No matter how much I tried to persuade her, she wouldn't leave. We had lived together for ten years, and there were feelings involved. I couldn't bring myself to kick her out, so she stayed.

Though my ex and I had divorced amicably, it was clear his mistress didn't want to keep things civil. She kept calling me, crying and demanding my house. I figured my ex was unaware; he wouldn't do something so embarrassing.

"Miss Cloton, the property was divided during the divorce. The house is mine. You can't claim it just because you're marrying him. The gift is way too lavish."

"I don't care. No house, no wedding. No baby. If anything happens to us, it's all your fault!"

She would call me repeatedly during my meetings, crying that she couldn't marry or have a baby without the house.

I knew Tobias Morgan's financial status. Even if he couldn't afford a big house now, he could easily buy a smaller one.

This girl refused to take out a loan for a bigger house or pay fully for a smaller one. She kept causing a fuss, blaming me for their inability to marry as her pregnancy advanced. No matter how much I explained that the house had nothing to do with her, she acted as if she couldn't hear and resorted to acting out.

I was at my wit's end. When I got home, Sophia immediately noticed I was upset and kept asking me what happened. Since it concerned her new daughter-in-law, I told her selectively. I didn't expect her to go ballistic immediately.

"That's not right! I helped pay for this house. How can she ask for it just because she wants? Did she even ask me? Shameless! Don't worry, Fiona, I won't let her get her way."

With that, she stormed out the door, full of anger. I didn't initially worry; I knew her temper. She wouldn't confront her daughter-in-law but would vent her anger at Tobias. I didn't think it would be serious.

But when it got dark and she hadn't returned, I started to feel concerned. Sophia was getting old and wasn't in great health. Worried something might have happened, I decided to go look for her.

I made sure Roland Morgan was settled, put on my coat, and was about to leave when the door opened. It was Tobias, bringing Sophia back.

He looked at me with a guilty expression, ushered Sophia inside, and told me he had something to say. Sophia shot him a glare and walked into the house.

To avoid a scene at the door, I invited Tobias inside.

"I'm really sorry. I didn't know she came to you. Rest assured, the house is yours. We won't take it."

I pressed my lips together and nodded. Honestly, I was very upset. The best ex should be like they're dead, especially a cheating one—buried far, far away from me.

"Anything else?"

I hinted he could leave now that he'd apologized. But he hesitated, his lips twitching, before finally speaking.

"Our mom will be staying with you for a while."
