My Husband Tore Up Our Premature Daughter's First Photo for His Mistress Chapter 1

ERIN'S POV

The alarm on the fetal monitor woke me before the pain did.

Then the pain caught up, a hard, tightening fist low in my belly that bent me forward and soaked my hospital gown with sweat in seconds. The room filled with people. Someone flipped on the overhead lights.

"Erin, I need you to stay on your left side for me," the night nurse said, adjusting the belt around my stomach. "Good. Keep breathing."

On the screen, the jagged green line of my daughter's heartbeat dipped. Then dipped again and stayed down too long.

Dr. Patel came in still tying her hair back. She flipped through my chart, the one with *31 weeks, 4 days* printed at the top in neat black type, and her face went very still.

"The baby's heart rate keeps dropping, and it's not recovering the way I want," she said. "We need to do a C-section. Now."

"She's not ready," I said. "It's too early."

"I know. But she's safer out than in right now."

They unlocked the bed wheels. The ceiling tiles started sliding past, and I fumbled my phone off the tray table and hit Ryan's name.

It rang until voicemail.

I called again. And again.

"Ryan, our baby is coming. Please pick up."

The doors to the OR swung open, and the cold hit me first, then the light. Huge round lamps, bright enough to make my eyes water. I stared up into them and thought about the night Ryan heard her heartbeat for the first time, on the Doppler the midwife let us borrow. He'd pressed his ear to my stomach like he could hear her better without the machine.

"I'm going to be there for everything," he'd whispered into my skin. "First word, first steps, every recital, every heartbreak. I won't miss a single thing, Wren. I promise."

A nurse gently pried the phone out of my hand. The screen was a column of red. Outgoing call. Outgoing call. Outgoing call.

Seventeen of them.

---

The spinal made my body feel like it belonged to someone else. My legs were gone, and my arms shook so hard against the boards they'd strapped them to that my teeth clacked. A green curtain hung a few inches from my chin, blocking everything below my chest.

"That's normal," the anesthesiologist told me, tucking a warm blanket around my shoulders. "The shaking. It's just the medication."

It didn't feel like medication. It felt like I'd been dropped in a frozen lake.

On the other side of the curtain, I heard the clink of instruments and Dr. Patel's calm, clipped voice. Pressure. Tugging. A clip on my finger beeped along with my pulse, fast and thin.

A nurse leaned near my head. "Hon, were we able to reach the baby's dad? Is he on his way?"

I opened my mouth and nothing came out.

All those appointments. The twenty-week anatomy scan he missed because of "a client dinner that ran long." The glucose test he skipped because a "last-minute board call" came up. The childbirth class where I partnered with the instructor because Ryan texted *so sorry, stuck at the office*, with a heart emoji like that made it fine.

And lately, the phone. Always face down on the kitchen counter. Face down on his nightstand. Face down on the restaurant table during our anniversary dinner, when he'd checked it four times and told me it was work.

I'd defended his excuses for years. To my sister. To my mother, while she was still alive. To myself.

Lying there with my belly open, I finally heard how stupid they sounded.

"Erin?" the nurse said. "Where's her father?"

"I don't know."

She squeezed my shoulder and didn't ask again.

Then there was a sound. Thin and wet and furious, barely louder than a kitten.

My daughter was crying.

"There she is," Dr. Patel said. "Hi, sweetheart."

I twisted against the straps, desperate to see her. A nurse swept past the edge of the curtain with a tiny bundle wrapped in a blanket still damp from the warmer, and for one second I saw a fist the size of a grape and a smear of dark hair.

"Can I hold her?" I asked. "Please. Just for a second."

"Not yet, Mom. Her breathing needs some help. The NICU team's got her."

And then she was gone, the door swinging shut behind her, and the crying went with her.

---

It was late morning when a nurse named Tasha finally wheeled me down to the NICU. Every bump in the hallway lit up my incision like a blowtorch. In my lap sat a clear plastic bag with my post-op paperwork inside, and on top of it, my phone.

Tasha parked me in front of the glass.

"Third one from the left," she said softly. "Take your time."

Wren lay in an incubator under a blue light, so small the diaper looked like a sheet on her. A CPAP mask was strapped over her nose, the tubing taped to her cheeks. Her chest moved in fast little flutters. Around one wrist, so thin I could have circled it with my pinky, was a plastic ID band that read *BABY GIRL MERCER*.

I lifted my phone with shaking hands and took her first picture.

Then I opened my texts.

*She's here. Her name is Wren. She's 1,510 grams. That's three pounds five ounces, Ryan. She's on breathing support. Please call me.*

I pressed send and watched it deliver. Read.

The screen lit up with his name.

I answered so fast I nearly dropped it. "Ryan. Oh my God, where have you been? She's so small, she's..."

"Erin, listen to me." His voice was low and strained, like he was cupping the phone. "I'm at St. Luke's."

St. Luke's. The hospital across town.

"What? Why?"

"Nicole lost the baby."

I didn't understand the words at first. Nicole. His "old friend" from college. The one he said was going through a hard time. The one whose texts made him smile at his phone and then turn it over.

"Nicole was pregnant," I said slowly.

"That's not what matters right now." He exhaled hard. "Nicole just lost her baby, Erin. She needs me right now."

I stared through the glass at my daughter's ribs rising and falling.

"Your daughter was just born," I said. "More than eight weeks early. She can't breathe on her own. Did you even read my text?"

"I read it. You said she's getting help. She's in the best place she could be." A pause. "Nicole doesn't have anyone else."

"She doesn't have anyone else," I repeated. "Ryan, I had a C-section alone. They cut me open, and nobody was holding my hand."

"Don't do this. Not tonight." I heard a muffled voice behind him, female. "I have to go."

The line went dead.

Tasha had stepped away to give me privacy. I was glad. A tear dropped onto the screen and blurred Wren's photo, and I wiped it off with my thumb before anyone could see.

I opened the picture and zoomed in. Her fingers were curled against her cheek, nails so tiny they were almost invisible. Her eyes were still sealed shut, like she hadn't decided whether this world was worth opening them for.

My phone buzzed.

*Please don't keep calling. Nicole needs to rest. I'm not leaving her alone tonight.*

I scrolled up. Seventeen unanswered calls I had made. Eleven unanswered texts. *Contractions started. Something's wrong. They're taking me back. Please. Ryan, please.*

Then that.

I turned the phone face down on my knee, exactly the way he always did, and looked back at my daughter.

"Hi, baby," I whispered against the glass. "It's just us right now. That's okay. Mommy's here."

I stayed like that until my incision throbbed and Tasha came back to check my IV. When she said it was time to go back to my room, I nodded and picked up the phone to slide it into the plastic bag.

The screen woke in my hand. A notification.

*Nicole posted a new photo.*

I shouldn't have opened it. I opened it anyway.

A hospital room. Dim lighting. A white blanket. And Ryan, my husband, leaning over a bed, carefully tucking the blanket under Nicole's chin, his face soft with a tenderness I hadn't seen aimed at me in months.

On his wrist, catching the light, was the silver watch I gave him on our wedding day. Our date was engraved on the back.

The caption read: *Don't know what I'd do without him. 🤍*

I had just given birth to his daughter.

And he was across town, telling me he couldn't leave another woman alone in a hospital bed.
