My Husband Chose My Pregnant Sister, But He Can’t Have Children Chapter 1

On our fifth wedding anniversary, my husband gave me a bracelet engraved with two words:

Best Aunt.

Then he took my younger sister’s hand and announced she was twelve weeks pregnant.

His baby.

Except she wasn’t really my sister. She was my father’s secret daughter, the child he had hidden from my mother for twenty-four years.

And apparently, everyone already knew.

My father told me to stop embarrassing the family.

My mother-in-law said I should be grateful another woman could give my husband the child I never could.

My husband slid divorce papers across the table and asked me to “let them be happy.”

So I did.

I packed my things, signed nothing, and walked away.

Because there was one tiny problem with their perfect little family.

The medical report inside my purse said my husband was infertile.

And when I came back for my belongings the next morning, I heard my pregnant sister whisper to my father-in-law:

“Your son still thinks this baby is his.”

***

I smoothed the edge of the white linen napkin beside the head of the table, making sure every place card was aligned.

Five years. Tonight marked five years since Ethan and I stood at the altar. It hadn’t been an easy road, especially with the quiet, suffocating pressure over our empty nursery, but I had personally booked the private dining room at the club, brought in his favorite vintage wine, and invited both of our families.

A pair of hands settled onto my shoulders.

I turned my head, smiling as Ethan leaned down. He smelled faintly of sandalwood and expensive wool. Without a word, he reached into his jacket, pulled out a slender silver bracelet, and fastened it around my right wrist.

Warmth flooded my chest. He had remembered. For the past three anniversaries, he had either been stuck in board meetings or claimed we were past the stage of needing frivolous gifts.

"Ethan," I murmured, touching the cool metal. "You didn't have to—"

"Look at it, Vivian," he said quietly.

I turned my wrist toward the chandelier light.

There was a small polished bar in the center. Engraved into the silver in clean, sharp script were four words:

*World’s Best Aunt.*

The warmth drained out of me so fast my fingertips went numb.

"What is this?" I asked, looking up at him. "Ethan, what does this mean?"

He didn't answer me. Instead, he stepped away from my side and walked around the long mahogany table. He stopped behind Tessa, who sat in a soft cream-colored dress, her hands resting in her lap.

Ethan placed his hand over hers. Then he pulled her up to stand beside him, intertwining their fingers in plain view of everyone in the room.

"Tessa is pregnant," Ethan announced to the quiet room. His voice was steady, completely devoid of shame. "Twelve weeks. She’s carrying my child."

My ears rang. The room tilted slightly, the heavy crystal chandelier blurring into a smear of yellow light. Twelve weeks. Three months. All those late nights at the office, all those weekend business trips to the coast.

I opened my mouth to speak, but before a single sound could leave my throat, my father stood up.

Richard cleared his throat and adjusted his silk tie. He didn't look at me with guilt or pity. He looked at me with the same cold, practical authority he used in boardrooms.

"There is something else you need to know tonight, Vivian," Richard said, his voice ringing across the dining table. "Tessa is my biological daughter. Your half-sister."

I stared at him, unable to process the words. "What did you just say?"

"Her mother and I had a history before she passed away," Richard continued smoothly, as if reciting a quarterly earnings report. "I only recently brought Tessa into our circle, but blood is blood. She is family."

He walked over to Tessa, patting her shoulder with genuine warmth before turning his gaze back to me.

"Ethan and Tessa have developed feelings for one another," my father said, speaking with absolute ease. "Since they love each other and a child is already on the way, you should step aside and give them your blessing. Be sensible, Vivian. It is far better for Ethan to build a family with your sister than with some stranger off the street."

A dead silence settled over the room.

I looked at the table. My father. Ethan. My mother-in-law, Evelyn.

None of them looked surprised. None of them spilled their wine or gasped in shock.

They had known. Every single person sitting around this table had known why we were here tonight. This wasn't an anniversary dinner. It was an ambush. A coordinated execution of my marriage.

Evelyn stood up next. She gave me a sympathetic, patronizing smile as she walked over to my chair at the head of the table. She pulled out the seat, turned toward Tessa, and gently guided the younger woman into it.

"Sit down, sweetheart, you shouldn't be standing so long in your condition," Evelyn cooed, tucking Tessa’s hair behind her ear. Then she turned to me. "Vivian, dear, don't look at us like that. We love you. We’ve always appreciated how hard you worked for this family. But you have to understand our position. The Mercer family cannot go without an heir. You haven't been able to give Ethan a child in five years. You can't expect us to let the family line end."

Tessa sat in my chair, her eyes welling with shiny, fragile tears. She looked up at me, pressing a hand against her chest while keeping her other hand firmly locked in Ethan's grip.

"Vivian, please don't hate me," Tessa whispered, her voice trembling with practiced innocence. "I never wanted to take anything from you. I tried to pull away, I really did. But Ethan was so lonely, and when the baby happened... I just couldn't destroy this life. Please forgive us."

She apologized, yet her fingers tightened around my husband’s hand, resting their joined palms directly over her flat stomach.

"That's enough crying, Tessa," Richard cut in, his tone protective. "You have to think about the baby." He turned his eyes back to me, narrowing slightly. "Vivian, your mother left you that vintage sapphire ring when she died. It's an heirloom meant to be passed down to the women who carry on the family name. Since Tessa is having Ethan's baby and continuing this family, you should give the ring to her tonight. It only belongs to the daughter who can actually give this family a future."

My dead mother’s ring. The only piece of jewelry my mother had kept hidden from my father’s creditors before she died of cancer six years ago.

A sharp, hollow laugh scraped against the back of my throat.

I didn't scream. I didn't lunge across the table. I just turned my eyes to Ethan.

I waited. I searched his dark eyes, waiting for a flicker of hesitation, a single trace of the man who had promised to love me through sickness and health. I gave him five whole seconds to say something—anything—to prove he hadn't turned into a complete monster.

Ethan met my stare without flinching.

He reached into his inner breast pocket, took out a folded white document, and slid it across the white tablecloth. It stopped right in front of me.

Printed clearly across the top in bold black letters were the words: *MARITAL SETTLEMENT AGREEMENT.*

"Everything is outlined fairly," Ethan said, his voice level and entirely businesslike. "You keep the apartment downtown and two million in cash. In exchange, you sign tonight and waive any claim to Mercer Holdings. Let’s handle this with dignity, Vivian. Sign it quietly. Don't cause a scene and stress Tessa out."

I looked down at the document. Then I looked at the bracelet on my wrist.

*World’s Best Aunt.*

They had calculated everything. The venue, the timing, the public pressure, the humiliating title they wanted me to accept so they could keep their scandal neat and pretty behind closed doors.

Slowly, I unclasped the bracelet.

The silver chain felt heavy in my fingers. I raised my hand and let it drop.

*Clink.*

It hit the divorce agreement squarely in the center, resting right over the signature line.

I picked the bracelet off the papers and slipped it into my handbag.

"So let me make sure I understand," I said, my voice cutting through the room with razor clarity. "What exactly are you all announcing tonight? That my husband cheated on me, or that my father cheated on my mother first?"

Richard slammed his palm against the table, rattling the silverware. "Vivian! Watch your mouth!"

"Did I say something incorrect, Father?" I looked him dead in the eye. "You bring your illegitimate daughter into my anniversary dinner, demand my mother's heirloom for the woman who slept with my husband, and expect me to smile and thank you for keeping it in the family?"

"Your mother has been dead for years!" Richard snapped, his face reddening with anger. "Don't you dare bring her up just to ruin the mood! We came here to resolve this like adults. You're being selfish and vindictive because your pride is hurt."

"Selfish?" I repeated quietly.

"Yes, selfish," Evelyn chimed in, frowning with deep disapproval. "Think about the child, Vivian. An innocent baby is coming into this world. Do you really want to be the bitter woman who stands in the way of a child having a legitimate family?"

They all stared at me, their faces forming a united wall of judgment. They looked like they were waiting for the tears. Like they expected me to shatter, to scream, to break down and beg Ethan to explain how he could do this to me.

I looked at Tessa.

Her head was tilted down, her shoulders shaking with small, delicate sobs, playing the part of the fragile victim to absolute perfection. One hand still rested protectively against her stomach.

I rested my palm against my designer handbag sitting beside my chair.

Tucked neatly inside the zippered inner pocket was a sealed envelope from the private clinic downtown. The comprehensive fertility and genetic screening report I had picked up only two hours ago on my way here.

A report containing the medical reality that had remained hidden from everyone—including Ethan himself.

I looked at Tessa's flat stomach one more time, and for the first time tonight, a cold, sharp calm settled deep in my chest.

She was definitely pregnant. Twelve weeks along, just like she claimed.

The only problem was, there was no possible way that baby belonged to Ethan.
