Arian had promised to meet us there, a rare gesture of involvement in something that mattered to me.

"Sloane, look at the cantilever on that corner," my father said, his voice warm with the enthusiasm that had shaped my childhood. "That kind of structural bravery is what I want to echo in the piece. Balance and tension."

I smiled, squeezing his hand. "You'll make it sing, Dad. You always do."

My mother walked beside us, her fingers intertwined with his. She caught my eye and winked—a silent acknowledgment of how rare it was to see me excited about something these days. Three years of marriage to a man who never spoke had taught me to find joy in small moments.

We arrived at the site, hard hats distributed by a foreman who knew my father by name.
